Mama’s Gotta Have a Whole Maternity Wardrobe for Under $100

Moody Mamas Maternity Long-Sleeve Wrap Dress

It’s been a few years since I was pregnant, but I remember one thing very clearly:  maternity clothes are ex-pen-sive.  A fortune.  For clothes you will wear for a maximum of ten months (Ish. Depending on how many kids you have and how desperate you are to maximize your wear-per-dollar ratio).  So you rely on outdated, ill-fitting handmedowns or your partner’s oversized shirts and winter coats–and you are grateful for them.  But what if I told you that you could buy an entire maternity wardrobe, one that you pick out in the sizes you want, for a hundred bucks?  You’d laugh out loud, take another bite of your bagel with cream cheese and put your feet back up on the kitchen table.

Moody Mamas Maternity Loungewear Knit Waist Pants

So I’m going to cut to the chase here.  Remember Moody MamasI profiled their chic and stylish maternity clothes on Target.com back in June 2010. Well, they now have a fabulous and totally affordable collection available on Walmart.com just in time for all those Christmas cookie exchanges, New Year’s Shindigs, and the dreaded Office Holiday Party…which you will have to face without a cocktail this year. Hey, at least you don’t have to look like you’re wearing the maternity dress your sister-in-law bought four years ago to wear to her cousin’s wedding.  So check out Walmart.com, and get the “look for less” with maternity pieces that range in price from $13 to $24.  Yeah you heard me.  Thirteen bucks.  And you get free shipping with a qualifying $45 order.

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bags. If Only They Came In Adult Sizes Too.

Thanks to the  folks at babysleepbags.com and Merino Kids, here’s another great review by Kristin and little MD…who is getting bigger! I’ve been singing the praises of wearable blankets or sleep sacks for a few years and they are widely available now in a great selection of styles and fabrics…I’ll post my very own walk down memory lane video at the bottom of Kristin’s review.  I haven’t tried Merino wool, but after reading this I think I need some new long underwear!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bags

If you are a new mom, then chances are you’ve heard of sleep sacks.  You may have even tried a few.  They typically come in many colors, sizes, and some have the option to swaddle.  But, I bet that you haven’t tried Merino Kids Sleep Bags.  And if you haven’t, then you should!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag on babysleepbags.com

Maybe you’ve heard of Merino wool…the soft, all-natural, biodegradable fabric that regulates your temperature and allows your body to breathe?  My family swears by Merino wool for our annual cross-country skiing trip.  In fact, even though I have extremely sensitive skin, my Merino wool long underwear has never bothered my skin.  So with that in mind, when I was given the opportunity to try a Merino Kids Sleep Bag for MD, I was ecstatic (I know it may not seem that exciting, but trust me, it is)!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag at babysleepbags.com

With the cooler temperatures of fall, we often relish the time without either the air conditioning or heat.  And during this time of year, sleep sacks are a great option.  As the fall temperatures drop, so do the temperatures in MD’s room (and although we should probably turn on the heat, I just can’t quite justify it yet).  Instead, I broke out the Merino Kids Sleep Bag, placed him in a long-sleeved onesie, zipped him in, put on a little hat, and into the crib he went.  The soft, all-natural fabric did not bother his sensitive skin, and he woke up with a huge smile!  Best of all, there are snaps at the top of the bag so that it doesn’t have to go over his head and it becomes snug around the arms.  The zipper goes 2/3 of the way around and makes it easy for those middle-of-the-night diaper changes.

Even better, the Merino Kids Sleep Bag ranges in sizes from newborn to older toddler, and is effective between temperatures of 59-68 degrees!  If you have a toddler who wriggles out of their blankets and sheets, this is a perfect option.  And, if you want to be able to take them from the car seat or stroller to bed, there is a “pocket” feature that allows the safety strap to easily slide through the legs!  Perfect for kids, great for peace of mind.  If only they had one for adults, then when my husband steals the covers at night, I would be toasty warm!

A Back to Preschool Beanie for the Bean – Giveaway

My Bean in a Beanie

As hard as I may try, I can’t seem to make the clock go backwards.  I’d love to rewind to Memorial Day.  I’m not one of those people who yearns for crisp autumn days and falling leaves.  I milk every last sprinkler park and sundress and road-trip day out of summer until September pulls me kicking and screaming into back to school.  Or back to Pre-K.  That’s where the Bean and I will find ourselves this September.  And while lots of my Facebook friends are already posting oh so summery “First Day of School” photos, we in New York City don’t start back until well after Labor Day.

Bean won’t start her school year until September 14th.  The first year she will go to school five days a week.  The first year she’ll take her lunch to school.  Glad I have a super cool lunch bag waiting in the wings.  I can’t even imagine her sitting down at a wee table and opening her little lunch box and eating lunch without me.  Sure she has eaten lunch with my mom or the babysitter while I was at work.  But mostly, we eat lunch together, Bean and I.  Must stop this train of thought.  Will leap irrationally forward to high school graduation and start to cry. Of course, that would mean we did manage to get her into Kindergarten somewhere.  Silver linings.

To fight back tears I grasp at the elements of “Back to School” I look forward to.  Bean reveling in seeing her friends again–oh the ardor of preschool friendships.  Mama having time to return to Pilates.  And the fall clothes.  The delicious brand new sneakers and Christmas morning feeling of unpacking hand-me-down back to school outfits.  I can start to get into corduroy.  Colorful tights. Cute autumny hats.

My Bean in a Beanie

Beanie Designs has given the Bean us just such a hat.  She chose the Beanie Visor with a Flower.  It is soft and snuggy and well-made and adorable and I love it.  Every Beanie Designs hat is handmade. They offer scrumptious baby hats as well as sweet chapeaux for girls and boys ages 4 – 10.  Organic hats (hooray!). Ear flap hats. Cupcake hats (double yahoo!). Bear ears hatsPom pom hats. Baby girl hats and baby boy hats.  I have seen a lot of baby and kid hats over the last four years–these are truly some of my favorites.  And thanks to Yacine at Beanie Designs, you can win any back to school, or preschool, or playgroup, or just snuggle up and love Beanie Designs hat of your choice for your baby or kid.  Want to enter? Why Didn’t I Think Of That? Mine for Nine Giveaway

Mine for Nine

And then one day, it happens.  You pee on the stick and there it is.  The little blue cross.  Or the double line.  Or the digital screen that says simply, “pregnant.” And it’s totally astonishing.  Except that everything is oddly the same.

Until, suddenly, it isn’t.  Maybe you start puking 24-7. Or maybe you can’t stop eating strawberries.  Or maybe you just feel like you got hit by a bus. And when finally the smell of cabbage seeping through the walls from your neighbor’s apartment or eau d’ frozen enchiladas that your husband decides would be excellent to heat up in the microwave no longer make you lose your peanut butter bagel, your pants stop fitting.  For a while you can keep them closed with a hairband looped through the button hole and around the button (I’ll give you that one for free).  But then something changes.  You really do get big.  And bigger.  And bigger.  And then freakishly ginormous.

And in the meantime, you have to go grocery shopping.  Or to a meeting.  Or, heaven forbid, to work! And the question becomes, what the flip are you going to wear for the next nine months? Maternity clothes are expensive! Do you really want to sink fifteen hundred dollars in clothes you plan to wear for six months or maybe twelve if for some reason you decide to do all this again? Or two hundred on a dress for your second cousin’s wedding?  Sure you can borrow from your friends, but if they are 5’4″ and weeny and you are 5’10” and less weeny, you are totally screwed.

Mine for Nine Designer Maternity Clothes Mine for Nine Designer Maternity Clothes

So, under the category “why didn’t I think of that”, comes Mine For Nine, flying to the rescue just as you have that big presentation on the horizon.  Instead of buying all those gorgeous, designer maternity clothes in oodles of sizes to fit your ever expanding waistline, why not rent the clothes for hundreds of dollars less? You choose the size to fit your belly right now.  You choose the designers.  You choose the style.  And here’s the best part, you get to give them back when you are done! No huge rubbermaid tub full of maternity wear taking up valuable closet real estate three years after you have had your child and you’re feeling like giving them away means something extraordinarily significant about your family planning choices.  If you get pregnant again, you simply rent different, even more updated clothes, later!

At Mine for Nine, you borrow for by the month, and if you want to keep an item longer, that’s fine! You are prorated for each additional week you wear your swanky mama duds.  When you can no longer squeeze that beautiful belly into an item, just send it back and pick something else.  The clothes are offered for rental at 75% off retail price.  Genius.  I love this idea.

Mine for Nine Designer Maternity Clothes

So check out Mine for Nine and browse their mouth-watering selection of maternity dresses and evening wear, suits, tops, pants, skirts and nursing wear. Mine for Nine offers styles for every occasion.  And here’s the best part, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a $50 coupon code for to apply to your first Mine for Nine rental (or purchase–yeah they offer new stuff to buy too).

At this moment, I am not planning to have a second child.  I have given away all of my maternity clothes.  Mine for Mine almost makes me reconsider.

Baby Lust – Seedling Kids Organic Baby Clothing

While browsing the San Francisco Mission district, I stumbled upon Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, “A nostalgic assortment of Toys and Games inspired by the Natural World and the Predigital era.”  I’d say it’s one of the most magical children’s stores I’ve ever been in.  Most of the offerings are toys and games, but in the baby section I did discover some of the most exquisite organic cotton onesies I’ve seen yet.

Seeding Kids Baby European Robin Organic Cotton Onesie

The collection of whimsically adorned organic cotton onesies from Seedling Kids is special.  The designs are inspired by nature and feature beautiful photographs by owner/artist Stephanie Hogan Webb. The clothing is made from 100% organic Texas cotton, cut and sewn in Pennsylvania.  The images are then hand-printed in the Seedling Kids studio using only low-impact, water-based inks.

Seedling Kids Organic Cotton Tree Frog Onesie

The Seedling Kids collection also includes infant tees, infant pants, toddler and kids tees, dresses, and more.

Seedling Kids Nest Organic Cotton Tee

The magic of nature and the purity of organic cotton.  That’s something babies just gotta have.

Tea Collection – Keepsake Quality Playclothes for Today’s Kid

First Birthday

The Bean’s first birthday.  We had a small family party on the porch of a beach house facing the ocean. I chose a little white knit dress with pink trim made by the Tea Collection for the Birthday Girl. I loved it so much. It’s in the box of keepsakes with the dress she wore home from the hospital and a few of my most treasured little snuggly baby clothes.

Tea Collection Girls Clothing

Tea Collection Clothing for Children

I have been a fan of the San Francisco-based Tea Collection ever since.  How perfect, then, that Tea offered us some of their new spring clothes to try out right here in the Bay Area when the Bean and her Daddy came out to visit me for two weeks.  We spent sunny days eating delicious gelato in Berkeley and hiking in the Marin headlands enjoying gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Bean is sporting the Boardwalk V-Neck Dress and Skinny Capri Leggings in Wild Rose, and the Flamenco Drop Waist Dress in Orange in these pics. The designs are gorgeous and inspired by worldwide culture, and the quality is evident.  Their baby clothes make gorgeous baby and baby shower gifts and their twirling dresses will satisfy even the most style-conscious preschoolers.

My Baby Clothes Boutique Gift Certificate Give Away

I first profiled My Baby Clothes Boutique back in July of 2010. As the warm weather approaches, Kristin had a chance to check out the site and review a darling swimsuit (note it was one of my picks last summer!). Cuz baby boys gotta have cute clothes too!

With baby hats, beanies, swimsuits, and unique baby clothes and accessories of all varieties, My Baby Clothes Boutique offers it all!  Both the girl and boy clothing lines are adorable and of excellent quality.  CW and I perused the pages for a while together trying to select the perfect option.  I loved the Lobster Swim Trunks and matching hat, but CW was partial to the Crab Swim Trunks.  CW won the argument!

CW in a Swim Suit from My Baby Clothes Boutique

As the weather has not been swim-worthy, we put on the swim trunks and headed for the bathtub!  CW was genuinely excited to wear the swim trunks.  He kept telling us with his unfaltering joy, “They have crabs on them.”  Then, he looked at me and said, “Mommy, these are really cool!”  They were certainly a hit with the three of us.  They are lightweight enough to keep him cool in the summer heat, and I found that they were of excellent quality as well.  The liner on the inside did not seem to bother CW, even though he has never been swimming without a swim diaper.  In fact, he did not mention it at all.

CW in his Swim Suit from My Baby Clothes Boutique

I can’t wait to go back onto the site and buy an adorable little outfit for our new little arrival…with so many cute options, I am sure to have trouble deciding which items to buy.  I even noticed some great gift options for my new nephew (to arrive in August), including a “Precious Cargo Train Layette Set with a Train Gift Box!”

I highly recommend My Baby Clothes Boutique for unique and quality baby and toddler clothing options at a cost that will not hurt your wallet!

And thanks to the folks at My Baby Clothes Boutique, one Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a $25 gift certificate to get ready for baby or replace those outgrown summer duds from last year!  Want to enter? Read on!

Good Kids, Snuggly Feet

Life is Good…for babies and toddlers too.

I am a sucker for Life is Good.  I’m out here on the west coast, looking for great baby and kids products made out here, and in a neat little shop on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco I came across Good Kids snuggly socks.  Life is Good is a New England company that dare I say, has a West Coast vibe?

I know it’s cold and damp back home.  It’s cool and rainy out here.

Look at these snuggle socks.  For babies.

The word’s not in yet, but I think mama-to-be Natalie Portman has a good chance to win an Oscar tonight.

So…what Mama doesn’t love a little glam?  The adorable, funky, and fun baby and toddler products from Backseat Driver Baby were created by a sister team from Southern California in 2007 (see, already glamorous) to fill the need for hipper, more happening clothes for baby boys.  So they made them.  And on their way they made adorable clothes for girls and cute and hip burp cloth and bib sets for all.  Their styles are so happening that they were recently given to Entertainment Tonight host Samantha Harris for her baby shower.  And there’s no hotter celebrity Dad these days than Neil Patrick Harris (aka my brother) who chose the “Butterfly” and “Muscle Car” collections for his twins, Gideon and Harper.  And oh yeah, Backseat Driver Baby was included in the Emmy swag at the 2010 Emmys.  And I’ve got the pics to prove it.

Peek-A-Boo Peekaru

Peekaru Fleece Baby Carrier Cover

I went to a really neat get-together last night, hosted by the wonderful gals at Momtrends (more inspiring and useful info to keep you on track with your New Years resolutions to come from that event), and met a really sweet young Mom carrying a super cute baby in an Ergo.  Now let me say, it’s blizzardy here in New York.  January 2011 has been the snowiest month on record in NYC.  I loved carrying my baby.  In fact, we have only just retired our Ergo this fall.   However, carrying your baby in the winter in Northern climes, is tough.  Brutal, even.  But when you can’t get a stroller through four inches of slush and the foot deep puddle at the edge of the curb, or better yet, down the treacherous icy steps into the subway, you really don’t have a choice.  So, I often wore my husband’s bulky winter coat and just zipped it up around my Bean.  Oh so fashionable.  Oh so comfortable.  But this hip and stylish mom I met last night, had an amazing lavender fleece vest that fit right around the baby carrier, with a little opening allowing his adorable head to peek out.  I haven’t carried a 6 month old for three years.  Believe me, I drooled over the whole package.

Can I tell you how much I wish I’d had a Peekaru? These soft, snuggy, warm, really cute fleece vests zip right over your baby and baby carrier combined.  And then you can just wear your pretty coat, open, over it (or check out the Peekaru Soft Shell Cover Coat which fits over and zips up perfectly).  Even better, each Peekaru is made from 85% recycled material, preventing 25 bottles from reaching landfills.  Lots of pretty colors, lots of sizes to fit every shape, side zippers for easy on and off.  It can also be worn on the back and is compatible with most baby carriers (check the FAQ to make sure yours is on the list). And the Mom I talked to was really digging hers.

Read all about the Peekaru at togetherbe.com, and check out their store locator if you want to try one out first.  You can purchase one for $79.99 plus shipping on their website, and check out the full Together Be line of baby carriers and accessories as well.  They are also available at other online outlets including Amazon.com.  Looking for a really original baby gift or baby shower gift?  Consider a Peekaru.  I’d say it’s something baby’s definitely gotta have.
