Mamas Gotta Have The Baby K’tan Baby Carrier

Here’s Kristin’s great review of a super cool baby carrier, the Baby K’Tan. Thanks so much to Baby K’tan for sending her the product to review!  We love baby carrying!

Baby K'tan Baby Carrier

Do you have lower back pain from carrying your baby everywhere?  Do your shoulders ache from that sling that only rests on one shoulder?  Do you need your hands free to keep up with your other children, to type, or to cook and clean?  Do you want a soft, simple way to carry your baby without the annoying buckles and clasps of other carriers?

Kristin and Baby M in the Baby K'tan Carrier

If so, the Baby K’tan baby carrier is truly a must have!  I have a Baby Bjorn, but this is a more flexible front carrier and sling in one…with all of the benefits of both.  The K’Tan provides a secure pouch in which to carry your baby from 8 pounds to 35 pounds, with a second loop of fabric for added support for your baby and your back!  Unlike the Bjorn, it is simple to wear and place your baby inside without the help of another person.

Baby K'tan Simple Fully Illustrated Instructions

Although it is incredibly easy to use with no latches, buckles, rings, snaps, zippers, or clasps, it does take some getting used to in order to use it for all 9 possible positions.  However, the directions are easy to follow, with photos to guide you through each step!  I’m sure once you have worn it a couple of times in the same position, the directions will no longer be necessary.  It is machine washable and dryer safe, and made of an extremely soft natural cotton fabric. It’s also available in 100% organic cotton!

Baby M Snug and Secure in the Baby K'tan Carrier

With the demands of an active three-year-old running around, this is a safe and comfortable way to carry my newborn around with me.  And, I can even discreetly nurse him on the go while he is comfortably tucked inside.  It allows me the freedom of having my hands free to do all of the tasks necessary for my other child, while bonding with my newborn at the same time!  In fact, studies show that carrying a baby in a sling is good for the baby’s mental and emotional development!  And, for those of you who are overwhelmed by the task of keeping up with older children while caring for a newborn, the Baby K’tan is a fantastic option!

With its two-loop structure, the Baby K’tan is perfect for carrying twins, and for creating necessary back support (unlike a traditional sling that places all the weight on only one shoulder).  The K’tan even comes in its own storage pouch, which flips inside out to be a large sash/burp cloth.  And, it comes with a matching hat (multiple colors for the K’tan are available from basic black to pure honey).  The K’tan is also available in a 50% cotton, 50% mesh blend for more breathability in the heat!  The Breeze Baby K’tan is available today–just in time for the heat wave.

The Baby K’tan.  A comfortable, breathable, baby carrier that won’t make you lose your mind trying to get the darn thing on. That’s something Mama’s just gotta have.

Special offer: From now until August 31, 2011 get a free Baby Bandana with your purchase of any Baby K’tan carrier.  Just add your Baby K’tan carrier to your cart, add your Baby Bandana to your cart, and use the coupon code “Bandana” at checkout!

Your NYC Playground Survival Kit

Your mission, should you choose to accept it.  Go to the playground.  In the summer.  In New York City.  With a child.

Easier said than done.  Today I forgot the beach towel.  So when we made the inevitable trip into the grocery store on the way home, the Bean very nearly contracted hypothermia.  Oh I had a clean dry set of clothes she could have changed into.  Said clean, dry outfit was rejected before leaving the playground.

So what do you need to take with you?   Here’s my list.

Keen Newport H2 Sandals

Keens. Hard soled, waterproof sandals for active kids running through city sprinklers.  These are the Newport H2’s. Not just for the cousins in Maine and Maryland.  These rugged sandals are the most commonly spotted in New York City playgrounds.  They don’t come cheap but they last forever and are worth every penny and if you’re lucky you’ll get some handed down to you. Or karmically, if you’re even luckier, you’ll hand them down.

Lands End Girls' Short Sleeve Pattern Ruffled Hampton Rash GuardLands End Girls Ruffle Hem SwimMini

A two piece, rash guard swimsuit from Lands End with UPF protection built right in.  Bonus, these swim separates are seriously on sale right now because it’s late June.  But I still have two months of summer coming at me.  I’m getting the Bean a new one the next size bigger.

Pottery Barn Kids Gecko Beach TowelPottery Barn Kids Hibiscus MIni Beach Towel

A beach towel.  We were given one from Pottery Barn Kids.  It’s crazy soft and thick.  Just keep it away from the velcro on your stroller bag.  And right now they are offering free shipping on beach towels…do these people not know that we’ve still got two months of summer left?

Sand toys.  Realistically, you should take the crappy ones you get at Michael’s for a dollar.  The sand box will eat them.  Other children will go home with them. But if you want to splurge, this set (The Melissa and Doug Sunny Patch Speck Seahorse Sand Ice Cream Set) will guarantee your kid instant friends.  Or enemies.  Depending on how that whole sharing thing is going on any given day.

Affiliate Link - Kid's Sigg Aluminum Water Bottle

An aluminum water bottle from Sigg.  The styles are adorable.  Mama can feel comfortable with the BPA free safe aluminum construction.  And the cap keeps the valve clean enough for this germaphobic Mama.

Affiliate Link - Nuby Bowls Six Pack Snack Bowls

Snacks.  Whether you’re making whole wheat blueberry mini muffins or just piling in the Cheerios and Pirate’s Booty, I don’t care what bowls you put your snacks in as long as they have lids and are BPA free.

Affiliate Link - Potette Plus Portable Potty

The Kalenco 2-in-1 Potette Portable Potty.  I kinda think this one speaks for itself.  Loudly.

Also bring:

  • A clean change of clothes – don’t forget the undies.
  • Wipes
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Sunscreen

And don’t forget the Iced Coffee.  That’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.

Mamas & Papas (and New Baby Brothers) Go Sola

I am so happy to share with you all the wonderful news that Kristin and CW welcomed little brother MD on June 6th.  Congratulations to the whole family! Kristin was able to complete this review in the days before MD made his very hasty entrance.  He’ll be riding in style for sure! Thanks to Mamas & Papas for sending Kristin this super sexy stroller to try out!

Mamas & Papas (and New Baby Brothers) Go Sola!

Mamas & Papas Sola Stroller

If you’re having a baby, chances are you feel overwhelmed.  Overwhelmed by the life-changing event that is all-too-quickly approaching.  And, overwhelmed by the choices to be made.  You’ve probably perused Consumer Reports, asked friends’ advice, read parenting magazines, and wandered aisles in your local baby supercenter.  You’ve probably even been to the point where you were so overwhelmed that you were close to tears.  If so, you are not alone.

CW in the Sola Stroller

This is my second time through, and I find myself a little less overwhelmed by the coming changes, but still just as overwhelmed by all the available products.  As soon as I saw the Sola stroller from Mamas & Papas, though, I took a deep breath and realized my concerns were no longer necessary.

Sola Stroller Folded

The Sola came to my door already assembled (except that I had to put on the wheels).  I can assure you, however, that with a quick snap the wheels are in place and you are ready to roll!  The Sola folds up and back out with ease (just a small button on the side that slides up).  With an adjustable foam handle, my husband (6′ tall) and I (5’3″ tall) can easily make the stroller work comfortably for either of us.  And, it has an adjustable footrest and adjustable five-point harness to make your child more comfortable as well. With lockable front swivel wheels and a canopy window in the hood so that you can peek in on that adorable little one, the Sola is extremely well designed and maneuverable.

Mamas & Papas Sola Stroller

Best of all, with one simple step you can flip the seat around so that your little one faces you.  There is a simple lever in the back of the stroller that adjusts the seat back, so you can use the Sola for newborns (reclines all the way) and older toddlers (there is a reclining option and a straight back option) up to 50 pounds. In fact, my three year old loves the Sola.  He always asks if he can ride in it, and I look forward to using it with my newborn in a few short weeks.  CW also loves the hood that keeps him dry in the rain (plus it came with a plastic rain cover as well that easily snaps on).  The stroller seats him up higher than our umbrella stroller and our jogging stroller, which is great for keeping his feet off the floor and giving him a great view of the world.  I took him to the zoo in the Sola and he was able to see all of the animals without getting out of the stroller!

Sola Stroller Reclined

After three years of using a super-cheap umbrella stroller, I am converted to the Sola!  I am fully in love with the lightweight frame, the attractive design, the spacious cargo area, the compact size, and the simple operation.  Your search is through – the Sola is the best stroller!  Mamas & Papas clearly designed their strollers to meet both the parents’ and the baby’s needs! To see more, including the four amazing colors (I chose Grass); accessories such as the coordinating footmuff, diaper bag, and parasol; and other items sold by Great Britain’s #1 baby brand, check out their website, Babies R Us, or browse the selection on Amazon.com.

Sola Stroller by Mamas & Papas

Note from Wendy: I was truly impressed by Mamas & Papas products from the first time I tried them out at a preview media event.  I’m always on the lookout for great strollers for city living and in my opinion Mamas & Papas is right up there with the best. When it comes to strollers the Brits get it.  Check them out!

If It’s Good Enough for Race Car Drivers…

Here’s another great product review from Kristin.  Thanks to Recaro for sending her this seat to try out and review!

From the maker’s of race car seats, Recaro has been a trusted safety seat for years.  So, why not trust your child with their car seats? I haven’t come up with a single reason!  Recaro has numerous options and their seats are SO easy to use.  As a mom who has now tried three convertible car seats, I can assure you that the Recaro ProRide Convertible Car Seat is the simplest to use by far. In fact, my husband and I were so prepared for a difficult installation that we allotted an hour to put in the new seat (and it took less than 5 minutes)!

Recaro Car Seat

The Recaro ProRide has a 5-point harness and is recognized for its high standard of safety, particularly in side-impact crashes.  Although no parent ever wants to imagine the unthinkable, it is best to be prepared.  Made from EPS energy absorbing foam and engineered with the same principles that protect race car drivers in collisions, the Recaro ProRide Series is completely up to the task of protecting your precious bundle!

Recaro ProRide Car Seat

The ProRide is designed with cool mesh air ventilation for breathability.  Even on our recent 80-degree day, CW climbed out of the seat without having a sweaty back.  There is also a front-adjust harness, which allows the shoulder straps to be adjusted with just a quick pull.  The best feature of this car seat is the easy adjust head restraint.  In most convertible car seats that go from 5 pounds to 70 pounds (as this one does), the shoulder straps must be removed and placed in fixed positions.  This not only takes up time, but it means that the shoulder straps are either too high or too low most of the time.  This seat, however, has a knob on the side that moves the entire headrest up and down for a quick and simple adjustment that fits perfectly on your child every day.

All Recaro safety seats are also assembled in the United States, in order to assure quality assembly.  The car seat came with a CD, and an easy-to-follow guide for rear-facing and front-facing usage.

Recaro ProRide Car Seat

This Mama says, if you’re in the market for a car seat that you can use from 5 pounds to 70 pounds, both front and rear facing, then you should race, not walk, to your nearest store to buy a Recaro ProRide car seat!

Babies Gotta Have a Rear-Facing Car Seat Longer Than You Think

Until age two as a matter of fact.  According to an article published today in “The New York Times,” the American Academy of Pediatrics is now advising that babies stay in rear facing car seats until the age of two to prevent the worst outcomes in auto accidents.

I know, I know…it’s such a pain in the neck to reach back from the front seat and try to calm your rear-facing baby and ply her with puffs.  And signing up to ride back there with her for two years is not so awesome either.  But let’s be frank, neither is a fatal car accident.

Read the article.  Keep your baby protected.  Then buckle up, kids, and enjoy the ride.

Peek-A-Boo Peekaru

Peekaru Fleece Baby Carrier Cover

I went to a really neat get-together last night, hosted by the wonderful gals at Momtrends (more inspiring and useful info to keep you on track with your New Years resolutions to come from that event), and met a really sweet young Mom carrying a super cute baby in an Ergo.  Now let me say, it’s blizzardy here in New York.  January 2011 has been the snowiest month on record in NYC.  I loved carrying my baby.  In fact, we have only just retired our Ergo this fall.   However, carrying your baby in the winter in Northern climes, is tough.  Brutal, even.  But when you can’t get a stroller through four inches of slush and the foot deep puddle at the edge of the curb, or better yet, down the treacherous icy steps into the subway, you really don’t have a choice.  So, I often wore my husband’s bulky winter coat and just zipped it up around my Bean.  Oh so fashionable.  Oh so comfortable.  But this hip and stylish mom I met last night, had an amazing lavender fleece vest that fit right around the baby carrier, with a little opening allowing his adorable head to peek out.  I haven’t carried a 6 month old for three years.  Believe me, I drooled over the whole package.

Can I tell you how much I wish I’d had a Peekaru? These soft, snuggy, warm, really cute fleece vests zip right over your baby and baby carrier combined.  And then you can just wear your pretty coat, open, over it (or check out the Peekaru Soft Shell Cover Coat which fits over and zips up perfectly).  Even better, each Peekaru is made from 85% recycled material, preventing 25 bottles from reaching landfills.  Lots of pretty colors, lots of sizes to fit every shape, side zippers for easy on and off.  It can also be worn on the back and is compatible with most baby carriers (check the FAQ to make sure yours is on the list). And the Mom I talked to was really digging hers.

Read all about the Peekaru at togetherbe.com, and check out their store locator if you want to try one out first.  You can purchase one for $79.99 plus shipping on their website, and check out the full Together Be line of baby carriers and accessories as well.  They are also available at other online outlets including Amazon.com.  Looking for a really original baby gift or baby shower gift?  Consider a Peekaru.  I’d say it’s something baby’s definitely gotta have.

And an extra suitcase for the diapers…Trumpette Socks Giveaway

Jet Set Babies

So you’re going to do it.  This Holiday season you’re going to pack up the baby, squeeze yourself back into your tankini, and go to the beach.  You’re even (gasp) planning to fly with baby.  You’ve filled your carry on with toys and (shhhh don’t tell) baby DVDs and your discrete breast-feeding cover-up.  Everything is going to be perfect.

Except.  You don’t have an entire suitcase to devote to diapers.  And bibs.  And baby food.  And baby detergent.  And all the gazillion things you need simply to make it through two weeks of life with your bundle of joy.  You stare at your two-year old as she careens around the playground?  Could she possibly carry her own diapers through the airport?  If you gave her a mini rolly suitcase?  Probably not.

So.  What do you do?

I’ve seen a lot of innovative baby sites, services and products since I created Babies Gotta Have It, but Jet Set Babies is one of the most clever I’ve come across yet.  The kind of service that makes me think, “Of course.  Why didn’t I think of that.”

Traveling anywhere with baby?  Jet Set Babies will hook you up.  Place your order online, and Jet Set Babies will ensure (yup, they call to confirm) that your gear will be waiting for you at your hotel when you arrive.  Book your flight, arrange for your place to stay, and then choose the package that best suits your travel needs.  Select from:  “Week at the Beach,” “Weekend at the Pool,” “Weekend in the Woods,” “Week at the Slopes” and more.  You can also order a la carte–everything from formula to bottles, baby snacks to little kid food, diapers and wipes to toys and sunscreen.  The selection is great, and I was glad to see they offer organic food and gear as well.  Plus, you won’t spend any valuable vacation time trying to track down a drug store to stock up on tiny bowls and puffs.  Genius.

Throughout the month of September Jet Set Babies will be giving away their Weekend in the Woods package on their blog, so be sure to check it out.  Be intrepid this fall!  Remember when you’ said “Even after we have the baby, we’re still going to travel”?  Well, do it!  Jet Set Babies will deliver to everywhere from your mother-in-law’s to right here in New York City. And since I’m living in one of the greatest travel destinations of all times, Jet Set Babies is offering one Babies Gotta Have It reader a pair of adorable New York City Trumpette Socks as a giveaway.

Mama’s Gotta Have Flowers and Her Own 401K

1-800-FLOWERS.com Rings the Opening Bell at NASDAQ

So I was thinking today, while I was standing in NASDAQ on 43rd Street clapping and hooting when Jim McCann and Chris McCann of 1-800-FLOWERS.com sounded the opening bell to celebrate all mothers as part of their “Spot a Mom Campaign”, that I don’t just want a nice bouquet of roses for all you moms this Mother’s Day.  I wish for you not only a floral arrangement that knocks your socks off, but also a good solid grasp on your family’s finances and a wee bit of financial independence as well.  I started a 401K this year.  I didn’t have a lot to put in it.  But it’s mine.  And it’s there.  Happy Mother’s Day to me.

Must Haves for Back to Preschool & Day Care

Wanna know what I wore for the first day of high school?  A purple plaid shirt with puffy sleeves, purple corduroys, and my gold “W” necklace.  Back to school time is a memorable time.

My baby girl just turned two.  And I’m already deep in the preschool application process.  Yup.  No Joke.  For the Fall.  Of 2010. School is coming.  For the wee ones and the big ones.  Next year will be our first ever “back to school” season.  I’m not sure what you call “back to school” time when you’re not coming back but going for the very very first time, but we’ll be in it.  And here are the three must haves that my little Bean will not face the day after Labor Day without.

New Shoes.  The Bean will definitely be sporting a new pair of kickers on her first day of preschool. If your wee one is off to preschool or day care this year consider shoes by Stride Rite or New Balance.

srt-fall-2009-group-imageStride Rite is well known for their incredible quality, durability and style, but they recently came out with amazing new shoes for early walkers based on cutting edge research into babies little feet!  Based on their studies, they created “Sensory Response Technology,” designed to optimize the biomechanics of the foot and encourage development of a healthy and natural gait.  Their SRT shoes come with a moisture-wicking lining, multi-directional flexibility, an amazing fit check system (just remove the lining and hold your wee one’s foot up to it–special marks will tell you if it’s time for new shoes), and rounded edges to prevent falls.  The most amazing feature, to me, are the “sensory pods” in the bottoms of the shoes that allow your baby to really feel the ground.  Also reducing falls.  I don’t know about you, but if her shoes can keep my baby from falling down at daycare, I’m all for it.

nbpeanuts_boysfallAnd if you’re just  looking for some super cute sneaks for fall, consider the new line of New Balance sneakers coming out in October…featuring the Peanuts!  In general, I’m not a fan of slapping cartoon characters on shoes.  But there’s something about the Peanuts characters that’s different to me.  They are classics, and the scenes depicted on these sneaks take me right back to 1980–in a good way.  I’m totally loving the shoes featuring Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin. But you can also get this classic running shoe with scenes from Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving or Christmas.  The shoes come sized for infants, preschool and grade school kids, are constructed with premium materials for comfort and breathability, and feature EVA cushioning in the midsole and heel and a solid rubber outsole for excellent support and durability.

Citizenpip Reusable Lunch KitA Lunchbox. OK I had a Charlie’s Angels lunchbox in 1977.  I have no idea where it is. I miss it.  To quote John Mayer (for the second time I believe…what’s up with that?) “whatever happened to my lunchbox?” I have, in general, been so emotional about the idea of my wee little baby (ok I know she’s two) eating lunch at preschool that I have weeded out all the schools that require 3 year olds to eat lunch. Snack she can handle. But lunch…without me?!?  Well, the Citizenpip Soup to Nuts Reuasable Lunch Kit has come close to making me change my mind. I kinda shudder to think abut all the baggies that I threw away(in addition to two, count ’em, two, retainers)  in the 18 years my mom packed me pb & j, chips, a piece of fruit, and cookies. This super cool lunch kit is better for the environment and quite frankly, awesome.  It comes with: 1 insulated lunch bag with nametag and carabiner that easily attaches to a backpack, 1 stainless steel water bottle, 1 stainless steel insulated food jar, 4 BPA-free airtight food containers, 1 stainless steel fork and spoon set, and 5 100% cotton napkins. Thank you so much Citizenpip for sending one for us to try out and put away for next year.  We got the “Tasty” style and it is adorable.  Looking for a wee kit for your wee tot? All the components are available a la carte as well.  (And just a heads up…be sure to check back in September for a Citizenpip Giveaway!)

Ok, I guess she can have lunch school after all…

Samsung TL220 Smart CameraA Camera. Because the back to school photo is a definite must have. And if I were a better blogger, I’d have some old grainy photo of me and my brother to post here.  But I don’t.  Want to take that first day of school pic in style? Check out the new smart cameras by Samsung! These seriously tricked out cameras were designed for today’s seriously digital world. The DualView TL225 and TL220 both feature dual LCD screens with one on the front so you can see yourself in that awesome facebook pic you’re trying to take in front of your new minivan.  Also, and get this, these cameras feature a child mode which, when enabled, plays a little clown movie on that front LCD to get your wee one’s attention and up the odds of him actually smiling for the camera.  And want to get that photo to Grandma in a heartbeat?  The Samsung CL65 features Wifi and Bluetooth so you can upload the pics directly–no computer necessary.  Smile! This camera will be available in September…just in time for school.
