Get to Know Your Neighbors with Babybuds! Baby Toy Giveaway!

It’s Earth Month!

Even though my baby is far from infancy, I still get so excited when I hear about a new line of eco-friendly baby products.  And a new line of eco-friendly baby products that’s available at a Target near you… is super exciting.  Though you guys know I’m a huge fan of local independent toy stores (SHOP LOCAL!), knowing that the big box boys are offering safe, green toys to customers shows how much traction the eco-friendly toy movement is gaining in the marketplace.  And how accessible and affordable these toys are becoming.

So. Friends? Meet Babybuds.  I just received these two in the mail: The Hoot the Owl Blanket Buddy and Frump the Elephant Rattle (he doesn’t look so frumpy to me!).  First of all, green or no, any Babies Gotta Have It pick has to be super cute.  Check!  I love the gender-neutral earth tones and animals.  We all know how hot owls are these days in nursery decorating.  The faces are sweet and the fabrics are soft.  So let’s discuss those fabrics!  According to the Babybuds website:

BabyBuds™ are made with love, using naturally sustainable, eco-friendly fabrics, including certified organic cottons and natural silks. And each BabyBuds™ toy is filled with virgin biodegradable corn fiber. We use only low impact dyes, and minimal packaging.

Every BabyBuds™ product is made with the safety of your little human BabyBud as our first concern. Every BabyBuds™ product is free from harmful chemicals, and complies with the strictest global safety standards.

And that, my friends, makes me stand up and cheer!

So where will our two little critters go to live?  We are lucky enough to have a new baby next door.  We don’t know his parents very well (after all this is New York, folks), but the new baby has been a great ice-breaker for us with them.  Cate was so excited to meet him a few weeks ago, and we decided then that it would be a really nice thing to take him a gift.  I feel comfortable and confident giving these toys to our neighbors, knowing that they are safe. For baby and for the planet.

Baby toys that fussy New Yorkers can feel really good giving to the people living next door to them that that hardly know?  That’s something savvy Mamas definitely gotta have!

If you want to go from “Say-hello-in-the-elevator-acquaintances” to actual friends with your new-parent neighbors check out the store finder on the Babybuds website to find the closest store to you!

And thanks to the wonderful folks at Babybuds, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a pair of adorable Babybuds toys of their very own!  Just use the easy Rafflecopter entry below to qualify!

Thanks to Babybuds for sending us the two items pictured above to review and then give to our neighbors.  As always, all opinions are strictly my own and you better believe were in no way influenced by anyone.

Mama’s Gotta Have It: A FashionABLE Scarf Giveaway

Babies Gotta Have It’s very own Kristin is coming to us with a wonderful organization to benefit women around the world…and a terrific scarf giveaway!

During the holiday season it is easy to get caught up in the spirit of giving, and the joy of helping others.  While I am committed to helping those who are less fortunate within the United States, I think it is great to help women around the world learn a new craft and create a sustainable business. That’s why we would like to host a giveaway; we want to spread the Christmas spirit!  And with all of our Babies Gotta Have It giveaways geared toward kids, we thought it would also be fun to treat Mama to a new scarf (because really, we do not have time to pamper ourselves)!

FashionABLE is a non-profit organization that helps women in Africa who have been exploited due to the effects of poverty.  With every scarf made, a job is created, and the net profit is sent back to holistically rehabilitate women.  So your contribution forms a cycle of giving and job creation that in turn leads to the rehabilitation of more women!  Plus, you get a beautiful scarf from it!

Not only does FashionABLE provide job training, but it also works with “Women at Risk” to offer counseling and rehabilitation (usually from exploitation).  The ultimate goal is to help these women become healthy and productive members of society!  Who can argue with that?

I have already bought 5 scarves as gifts and for myself!  And now I am offering one to you as a giveaway!  You will even get to choose which one you want…and wouldn’t it be great to pay it forward to someone else?!  So, pamper yourself and enter the giveaway!  The fashionABLE scarves make great gifts for all of the women in your life, and you can read the testimonies of the women you are helping here.  Merry Christmas!

Because Life Really Is Rosey…a Hand Stamped Jewelry Giveaway

One thing I love about my life as an itinerant actress/Mama is that I meet so many incredible people.  Ten years ago, I was cast as a magician’s assistant in a play in Louisville, KY.  The magician was played by an amazing actor and equally amazing guy named Rene.  When you work out of town on a show, you become a close-knit tribe.  Everyone in the production is away from spouses and boyfriends, siblings and pets, and the cast becomes your instant family.  If you’re lucky, and really in this business you often are, you meet wonderful people. And then, as time passes and everybody’s loved-ones make the trip to see the show, you meet their equally wonderful families.  And your show family grows.  Ten years ago Rene and I were both more newly married, and I was so excited to meet his gorgeous and talented wife Sarah Jane when she came to visit.  And now, here we are ten years later, with kids galore, both still happily married and both still pursuing this crazy life.

Sarah Jane is not only an accomplished singer and performer herself but also a talented jewelry-maker, and it’s my incredible honor to introduce you to her line of exquisite hand-stamped jewelry.  Sarah Jane’s Etsy boutique,  Life is Rosey: Jewelry That Speaks was named after her first child, Rosalee.  You know I love promoting mom-created and mom-run small businesses and that’s exactly what Life Is Rosey Is.  And Sarah Jane’s work is, to my eye, extremely special.

So what sets Sarah Jane’s hand stamped jewelry apart from the rest?  Several things.  First and foremost all of her silver pieces are 100% sterling silver.  No silver base metals are included in her work.  Her pieces are unique yet simple, delicate yet enduring, meaningful yet full of whimsy and fun. I just love the birthstones and charms she incorporates into some of her designs–so playful!

As Sarah Jane says in her Etsy Shop Announcement:

I create hand stamped necklaces, bracelets, earrings, personalized guitar picks, and golf ball markers from sterling silver, copper, bronze, and 14K gold filled. I love stamping out each piece with meaningful words, date, verses, and phrases and it makes me extra happy that so many customers tell me their loved one cried when they received the gift. Yep, if you want make someone cry, I’m your jewelry designer!

I mean, just look at these gorgeous photos. Her work is beautiful, right?

So here’s the best part about profiling a friend’s work on Babies Gotta Have It – Sarah Jane is offering one Babies Gotta Have It reader any piece of his or her choice from her Life is Rosey Etsy Shop!  That’s right, any piece of your choice, personalized to your specifications, and shipped to you with a polishing pad to keep your jewelry shiny looking and new. Talk about the perfect holiday gift.

You can order any of the pieces pictured and lots others through Sarah Jane’s Etsy Shop, Life is Rosey.  And, in honor of our amazing Life Is Rosey giveaway we’re hosting our first ever Babies Gotta Have It rafflecopter giveaway.  Enter using the rafflecopter form below and let us know how you like it!

Update!  We have a winner!  Rafflecopter and Random.org say entry 284 – Kathryn D is the winner!  Thank you so very much to everyone who entered!

muCan I Get a WotWot!? – Stuffed Toy Giveaway

Well, I might just live under a rock.  I had never heard of the WotWots; these dear, lovable, curious, Fraggle Rock-meets-the-Muppets-type-of-aliens flew onto our front doorstep and into our lives.  As usual, CW was super excited to see the UPS truck drop a package off at our door.  He immediately wanted to know, “Is it for me?”  He was a little annoyed that it was for MD and not him, but he took a liking to Spotty Wot as well.

I digress.  If you live under a rock like me, you can watch the introduction to the WotWots! here.  I guarantee that your kids will laugh hysterically.  Mine did.  And “WotWot” joins the handful of words in MD’s vocabulary (“apple,” “uh-oh,” “Daddy,” and “up” are his other favorites).  The WotWots are twins, Spotty and Dotty, who fly around making mischief!  I loved the use of real zoo animals with the WotWots.

But, best of all, they are now available in plush toys for your favorite girls and boys.  The soft eyes and fuzzy fur are safe for babies ages six months and up, and great for teaching your little ones about the parts of a face (MD loves the “eyes”).  Their furry antennae are adorable and springy!  More often than not, Spotty Wot can be found in MD’s crib nestled under his arm while he sleeps.  I have even watched him (on the monitor) rubbing the antennae with his hand while he tries to fall asleep.  Spotty Wot is blue and Dotty Wot is pink (for those of you who have children who like one color over the other).

Put these fun creatures on your children’s Christmas list this year!

The WotWots! can be seen on TV on the Hub. You can buy the plush toys on our affiliate Amazon…and one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a soft and fuzzy WotWot for their very own!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Waverly Hits All the Sweet Spots

A glittery pink glowing seashell that reveals secrets.  The magical undersea land of Azarella.  Tiny three inch tall mermaids. A quest for magic pearls.  Cute squishy pearl pets. Lots of tiny pieces to collect and trade. Girls, meet Waverly and the Magic Seashells.

Yes, this toy is plastic and made in China.  And in general I’m not so much on board with filling my apartment with more plastic stuff.  However, sometimes a little girl wants some sparkle and glowing lights.  And if that’s on your little mermaid’s list, Waverly and the Magic Seashells will absolutely satisfy.

The Waverly and the Magic Seashell set comes with a battery operated magic shell, the Waverly mermaid doll, seaweed, a magic pearl, and the pearl-holding ring.  Once turned to the “on” position, the sea shell springs to life, revealing one of several “secrets” when the pearl is placed in the magic spot.  Waverly can swing in her swing, sit on her couch or slide down the slide.  Her five mermaid friends are available in separate sets, which come with unique hairbrushes (yes these dolls have HAIR), pearls, and a separate accessory.  Also available are Pearl Seashells with Pearl Pets included.  In addition to the big Seashell set, we received the individual Waverly doll set and Chip, the snail pearl pet.

Girls like tiny toys. Girls like sparkles.  Girls like mermaids.  Girls like collecting shells. Girls like pets.  Girls like battery operated toys that sparkle talk to them.  At least my girl does.

This toy has them all.

The Seashell Set is essential for the whole secret-revealing aspect of the pearls.  You need the set for them to talk to you.  So if you’re buying this toy you’ll probably want to start with that set (which is the most expensive set, at $24.99) and then add on.  And I look forward to meeting some mermaids with dark skin and hair.  All of the toys we received fit into the Seashell set and close up for storage.  And the miniature size means it doesn’t take up too much room on  your shelves.

But here’s the thing.  We received two Waverly dolls in our review package–one came with the seashell and one in her own set.  And when Cate opened them and discovered they were the duplicates, we thought about it, and we decided she could give the second doll to her cousin when we visited over the long weekend.  She packed the doll, and upon seeing her beloved older cousin, immediately gave the doll to her.  Just in case you were wondering, the 8 year old seemed pretty taken with the tiny mermaid as well.

And I think that’s what girls like.  They like to collect trinkets and then to trade them and even better, to give them away.   Yeah this toy talks at you.  It takes batteries.  It is plastic.  But it does allow for open ended, imaginative play.  It creates a neat new magical undersea world.  It believes in magic.  And these mermaid dolls have hips!

And that’s something babies definitely gotta have.

Look for Waverly and the Magic Seashells toys at Toys R Us, Target or Kmart.  Or enter to win the Seashell Set, A Mermaid Set, and a Pearl Pals set right here at Babies Gotta Have It!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Jello and Other Dangers – A Safety 1st Giveaway

I was just informed that I can’t bring Jello squares to Cate’s preschool for her birthday celebration. The children with summer birthdays are all getting to chose a day at the end of the year for their fake birthdays. And let me just say a bit about this. On one hand I say yay.  They are only four. They have seen all of the other kids who had birthdays during the school year get to make a birthday necklace and sing happy birthday and have their parents come in and read to the class.  So it’s only fair they get a day.  On the other hand, I say, no way.  Some kids have birthdays in the summer and some kids have birthdays during the school year.  When yours is during the school year you get cupcakes a birthday necklace and a story. When yours is in the summer you don’t have to go to school, you get a long sunny day, you get vacation. Not every kid gets every thing.  And every child is not entitled to everything.  However, all of the children are doing birthday days so I relented. Also, it happens to be my week for bringing snack to school.  I thought jello squares would be fun for Cate’s fake birthday. I was told they are too sugary.  This. To me. Is too much.

Once our children are four, they should be allowed a little jello, I say.  No peanuts. No gluten. No dairy. Just a little squishy fun. Heck, I’ll make it with unflavored gelatin and fruit juice if I have to. At a certain point, I kind of feel it’s time to let go. But what is safe for our preschoolers, is so much murkier than what is safe for our babies. Where to draw lines becomes so much less clear.  The lines themselves are fuzzier.

We still have most of our childproofing around the house.  But it’s all starting to look dingy and worn.  Bean towers above corners that still have protectors on them.  She knows how to open cabinet protectors. Half of the outlet covers have been removed so we can plug in the vacuum.  And the rice cereal and applesauce have been supplemented with some…jello.  And for me that’s okay.

.

But. Oh what a different story for you Mamas of babies and toddlers.  Part of me misses those days.  When it was clear that everything, absolutely everything, was to be controlled by me, and the most important mission of any given day was to ensure the health and safety of my little Bean.  Things were clearer then, in a way.  Not necessarily easier.  But clearer.

Child proofing for babies and toddlers is no joke.  Those of you with climbers, already know this.  The dangers for babies and toddlers go way beyond sugary snacks, and unfortunately, outlet covers and corner protectors aren’t enough.  Julie Vallese, Consumer Safety Expert for Safety 1st, has compiled a list of other childproofing and child safety tips that you may not have thought of.  I wanted to pass a few of them along to you. And then, since we’re celebrating birthdays and all, there will be a giveaway.

  • In the city, we get notices every year to make sure that we have window locks and guards to prevent falls.  But hey you suburban Mamas, the second floor is pretty high too and it’s open-the-windows season.  Make sure your locks work and you have window guards.
  • Keep an eye out for toy stacking under the windows.  Kids are desperate to peek/climb out your now very secure windows.  Watch out they aren’t creating a Mount Everest of nesting blocks beneath the windows.
  • Watch out for those little monkeys scaling your furniture and TVs. Lots of kids are very seriously injured when they pull over furniture and (gulp) flat screen TVs on to themselves.  Use Flat Screen TV locks and furniture anchors to prevent this tragedy.
  • If you’ve kept them from climbing the world, they may then try to eat it.  Anything that will fit inside a toilet paper roll is a choking hazard.
  • Use oven locks and remove dish towels from the oven doors. Kids can pull on those dish towels, opening the doors and whomping themselves.  Not to mention–the hot oven! Also consider clear view oven knob protectors to keep the kids from turning on the burners or the oven accidentally.
  • Toilets and front-load washers are also attractive nuisances.  How fun to see which toys float! Consider toilet and washer locks, or just keep the bathrooms and laundry room (laundry room? what’s that?) off limits using door knob covers.
  • Cabinet locks are also a must.
  • BUT, with all of this locking and latching and unstacking…remember to allow your kids to have some areas they are allowed to play!  Consider a basket of tupperware and pots and pans in the kitchen that your kids can crawl into, empty and play with as much as they’d like!  A safe zone can be a happy zone!

Ready to make your house secure for baby?  Years away from the jello debate? One lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a Safety 1st childproofing kit to make to help make this summer super fun and super safe.  And while you’re at it, whip up a jello parfait.  Top it with some Cool Whip.  You’ll be glad you did!

So what’s in the Prize Pack?  One lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will receive a prize pack of items from Safety 1st to Babyproof and Toddlerproof her home!  This prize includes The Safety 1st Essentials Childproofing Kit, The Furniture Wall Straps, and the Pro-Grade Window Lock in a 2-Pack.  Want to enter?  Read on!

Baby Gourmet, From One Mama to Another – Giveaway

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

Is your baby ready to eat solids?  Or, maybe you have a picky toddler who eats very few vegetables and fruits?  Have you noticed the overwhelming variety of baby foods available?  Have you wanted to make your own baby food, but just don’t have the time (or equipment)?  While I love my Baby Brezza, and it is so simple to use, I just don’t always have the time (or ingredients) to create fresh meals for MD.  But, I have been a bit disappointed with the variety of Organic baby food products available at my grocery store from the “regular” companies (like Gerber and Earth’s Best).  Recently, though, I was sent some products by Baby Gourmet to try (thank you Baby Gourmet for the sample pack) and my whole life has changed!

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

When Baby Gourmet’s founder Jennifer Broe’s daughter was six months old, she attempted solid foods for the first time.  To her disappointment, she was not impressed by the typical baby food selections.  Like me, she struggled with giving her child those disgusting greyish green, stinky green beans.  She wanted to give her child something that was healthy and flavorful.  So, she started creating her own baby foods.  Then her friends’ babies tried the foods, and she went on to sell them on the weekends at farmer’s markets.  Now, she runs Baby Gourmet.  Every batch is taste-tested prior to packaging, and if it does not meet Jennifer’s high standards, then it is thrown away!

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

I have to say, I am a purist when it comes to eating…I like my foods separate.  My older son eats his foods on a sectioned plate because he doesn’t like separate foods touching.  So, it’s difficult for me to be creative with flavors.  But, now I don’t have to do it alone!  Baby Gourmet offers wonderful mixtures of textures and flavors (I tried them, and they were absolutely amazing…maybe I’ll invest in them when I’m old and can no longer eat regular food).  For example, yesterday MD (and I) tried the Orchard Apple, Carrot and Prune.  Neither one of us wrinkled our noses! Today he had Baby’s Sweet Potato Pie – it was gone and he was looking for more!  Other wonderful flavors include: Juicy Pear and Garden Greens; Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp; Harvest Pear, Pumpkin, and Banana; and many more!

All of the products are made using USDA Organic fruits and vegetables. There are no fillers or thickeners.  They are all gluten-free, unsweetened, and nut-free.  The re-sealable pouches are BPA free and labeled clearly with Stage 1 (6 months+), Stage 2 (7 months+), and Stage 3 (8 months+).  Your child can feed himself directly from the pouch, or you can squirt the food into a bowl.

Baby Gourmet

I have tried a ton of different baby food products for CW and MD, and Baby Gourmet offers the most variety of flavors and textures, with 100% organic produce!  Baby Gourmet is available in most grocery stores and on Amazon.com.  Try it today!
