Mama Wants Outdoor Gear – The Showers Pass Biking Jacket

I like flowers.  I like candy.  I like nice dinners and jewelry and all that.

But this year, I want gear for Mother’s Day.  Lately I’ve become something of a cyclist.  I know! Who would have guessed?  But I loved biking as a kid.  This tomboy was inseparable from her bike from the day I got my first brown Huffy three speed until my kick-ass Peugeot sadly waved goodbye as I drove off to college. And then somehow, I stopped.  No one biked at my school.  I moved to New York in the pre-bike lane years.  During my first few months in the city I witnessed a pretty nasty encounter between a bike messenger and a taxi in Soho.  Years passed…

And then two years ago we took a summer vacation to Cape May and rented bikes.  Cuz that’s what you do at Cape May.  You rent bikes.  And I felt like I was reunited with a long lost friend.  Since then Doc Hubby and I bought ourselves mountain bikes.  We got an awesome Trek trail-a-bike for the Bean on Craig’s List in New Hampshire.  And we are kind of unstoppable.  I still don’t like to ride on the streets, but I think Rails-to-Trails is one of the greatest things to happen to this country ever.  And then a group of terrific Moms at Bean’s preschool invited me to spin with them and I am hooked.  I cannot say how this happened because I pretty much do not like to be pushed physically…ever.  But I go twice a week and pedal very hard to very loud music and sweat a lot and go nowhere.  But it’s fun!

So.  When the lovely folks at Showers Pass wrote to me to ask if I wanted to test out their new Elite 2.1 biking jacket I responded yes within about forty five seconds of receiving their message.

We have purchased some bike gear.  We have camelback water carriers and I got some cool gloves at LL bean.  We bought some padded shorts and I got a really neat skirt.  But I had nothing for cool weather until I got my new jacket and I LOVE IT!  I love it so much I am going to show you this photo of me wearing it yesterday at 5 pm when we went for the first bike-ride of the season and the temperature was about 52, even though I had spent all day working in the yard and I hadn’t showered and I look kind of hideous.  The jacket looks GREAT!  And you’ll note, the black design on the sides makes you look super skinny!

And let me tell you, the Showers Pass Elite 2.1 jacket is absolutely awesome.  Yesterday was cool and crisp with a bit of a wind.  I am always cold.  Always.  I layered the jacket with a fleece and a wicking layer, and I couldn’t have been more comfortable.  I zipped it all the way up to my chin, but the inside of the neck has this incredibly soft micro-chamois lining–delicious.  And you can cinch the collar and the waist even more if you so desire.  The seams are all taped for wind and waterproofness and the sleeves are tapered to your wrist and secure with velcro.  There were no cool breezes getting in at all!  Oh and it’s waterproof.  Which we didn’t need yesterday thank goodness.  But I love it.

So say I had gotten hot on the trip…well the Elite jacket is ready for that too!  It’s got all kinds of vents including those vents under the arms that you can unzip to air out.  And…wait for it…a chest pocket with an audio port for your phone.

This is, no doubt, the coolest jacket I own.  In a way, this jacket has thrown down.  It’s challenging me from over there on the hook –urging me to get off my butt and get out on the trails.

“Wendy,” It says.  “Can you possibly be as cool a cyclist as I am a jacket?”

Yes Elite 2.1…I am up to the challenge.  And oh yeah, if you want to get one for Daddy for Father’s Day the mens version is pretty hot too.  I think Doc Hubby would look darned good in one.

A Mother’s Day gift that challenges you to be as cool as it is?  That’s something this cycling-Mama’s definitely gotta have.

Thanks to Showers Pass for sending me Elite 2.1 Jacket for review.  As always, all opinions are strictly my own and sure as heck weren’t influenced by anyone.  Babies Gotta Have It is an Amazon affiliate.

Nine Naturals: Pampering for Pregnancy and Beyond

I don’t know about you, but I could use some pampering.  I have two beautiful boys who are a ton of fun, but I do not get many chances for pampering myself.  Thankfully, Nine Naturals sent me the Nine Naturals Travel Gift Set to try.  And, oh man, I am in love!

Because I have curly hair, I am picky about my shampoo and conditioner, and have struggled to find an all-natural set that does not leave my hair limp and greasy.  I found one now, though!  Nine Naturals is 100% Natural. It is Sulfate-free, Paraben-free, Phthalate-free, BPA-free, Triclosan-free, DEA-free, Petrochemical-free. All of the products are free of artificial chemicals, dyes, and synthetic fragrance.  If you read the ingredients list, everything is derived from natural sources (water, coconuts, sunflowers, lemons, etc.).  So, not only is Nine Naturals a great product for use when you are pregnant, but it is also a great way to pamper yourself for years to come!

The Travel Gift Set includes: Citrus and Mint Nourishing Shampoo, Citrus and Mint Nourishing Conditioner, Citrus and Geranium Soothing Body Wash, Mandarin and Ginger Restorative Conditioner, and Vanilla and Geranium Restorative Belly Butter in a reusable hemp travel bag.  I lathered up for over a week of blissful bathing, and had amazing results.  My hair was full of body and curl, my skin was soft and hydrated, and my hands were smooth and restored.  Now, you might say, “So what?” But, my hands are so dry in the winter (and thanks to endless dishes) are the equivalent of the Mojave Dessert.  In fact, they often peel and crack.  But, the Belly Butter, while nice on my belly, was most helpful for rehydrating my hands.

Even my husband noticed, which is saying something.  He loved the scents, and mentioned that my “hair smelled lovely” on more than one occasion (which he has never said before).  I think he liked the natural smell of the citrus and vanilla in particular.

With all that in mind, I am sure some of you are still wondering why you should try it.  Why should you pay for natural shampoo, when you can buy a jumbo bottle of something else at Target or Costco?  If you are as concerned about the health of your unborn child as I was, then maybe you will rethink that.  If you are willing to give up certain foods and drinks and other toxins, why not try Nine Naturals for the nine months of your pregnancy?  And, I think you will find that you love it so much, and love that you are being eco-friendly, that you will continue using it indefinitely.  I now use it on my children and myself, and will not buy harsh shampoos and conditioners again.  Make the pledge to shower naturally for the next nine months, and you will love the way your skin and hair feel!  Go ahead and pamper yourself (and your friends…what a great baby shower gift this would be)!

Little Children Big Challenges – Sesame Street Takes on Divorce

Did you know that Abby Cadabby’s parents are divorced?  They are.  You won’t hear about it on “Sesame Street”, but Sesame Workshop has created a thoughtful and comprehensive guide for parents to help you help your child through divorce.  Little Children Big Challenges: Divorce is just one of many tool kits that Sesame Street has put together online to offer help to families during particularly challenging situations.  And like all of the materials created by Sesame Street, it is a rich resource for families and caregivers dealing with the difficult transitions that divorce presents.

The Little Children Big Challenges: Divorce tool kit offers videos featuring some of your favorite Sesame Street characters, songs, printable activities, printable tip sheets for parents and caregivers, and a downloadable storybook called “Two Hug Day.”  “Two Hug Day” deals sensitively with the feelings that may arise in kids on days when they switch from Mommy to Daddy’s house, or vice versa. Two-Hug days.

Divorce will ultimately impact 40% of children.  We all will, at some point, encounter children who are moving through this difficult transition–be they our own kids, our relatives, or our children’s friends.  And at any moment we may be called upon to help a kid negotiate a challenging emotion or situation.  It’s just good to know that we aren’t alone in these tough times.  That there are resources available to help us help our children.  And that those resources come from someone as trustworthy, smart and thoughtful as Sesame Street.  Sesame Workshop even has created a Divorce App (available for both iPhone and Android devices), because goodness knows those difficult questions can arise anywhere from in the car to at the ball field and beyond.  These resources are designed for families with children ages 2 – 8, are completely free, and can be accessed on the Sesame Street website here.

Thank you Sesame Street.  Your partnership in life’s difficult transition is something that families definitely gotta have.

I attended a panel discussion at Sesame Workshop this week and received two Little Children Big Challenges: Divorce kits containing a Sesame Street DVD, A Guide for Parents and Caregivers, and a copy of the  “Two-Hug Day” story book.  I will happily mail these to the first two readers who request them.  Please leave a comment on this post if you would like one and I’ll email you for your address.

Join the Koru Herd

Koru Yoghurt (that’s right, Yoghurt with an “h”) has hit Manhattan.

We like our yogurt here in the city.  We eat it for lunch.  We add granola.  We cook with it.  We suck it out of tubes and drink it smooth.  We love it frozen with lots of toppings.  And with the explosion of Greek yogurt it seems hard to believe that there could be something new in the yogurt aisle.

I’m here to tell you that there is.  Meet Koru Creamery Style Yoghurt.  “Creamery style?” you ask.  Yup.  It is crazy creamy.  Custardy creamy.  Really really smooth and delicious.

What else is new about Koru?  Transparency.  All around.  The containers are transparent so you can see just how much fruit is on the bottom.  And transparency in the ingredients–pretty much nothing your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize in the components of this treat.  You can feel really good about giving Koru to your kids and they will love these varieties.

And then there are the flavors.  They are fancy! Peach (my favorite), Strawberry Goji, Mango, Pomegranate and Cherry, and just in time for Valentine’s Day…Passion Fruit.  Fancy and delish.  I’m having a Passion Fruit right now as a little pre-lunch.  Scrumptious.

No, Koru yoghurts are not low fat.  They are not low sugar.  Neither do they taste low-fat or artificially sweetened.  They are natural, they are decadent, and they are a little bit of heaven in a cup.

That’s something that Mamas and Babies definitely gotta have.

Koru Creamery style yoghurts are available at supermarkets near you.  You can also join the herd on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all the latest Koru news.  Moo.

Thank you to Koru for sending me a cooler of Koru yoghurts to try.  As always, all opinions are totally my own and you better believe they were not influenced by anybody.

Mama’s Gotta Have A MovieNoodle Valentine’s Day Giveaway

Valentine’s Day.  A night of romance.  A night of adventure.  A night of…folding laundry?

Well, when you have young children Valentine’s Day is often just another night.  Who can afford a night out these days?  Babysitting? Dinner? Movie? Let’s admit it, after (ahem garble whatcha cha) years of marriage, Valentine’s Day can start to seem like just another day.

I read this article in The New York Times the other day (and I am so NOT the kind of person who usually starts a sentence, “did you see that article in The Times…”) about marriage and what it takes to keep a marriage alive after (achoo, burp, snarfle) years.  You can take a look at it here but let me sum it up by sharing the title: “That Loving Feeling Takes a Lot of Work.”  The article asserts that the happiness boost that comes with marriage only lasts two years.  After that we become habituated.  And to keep things alive, it takes a little effort.

So if you’re thinking that Valentine’s Day is just too much trouble or expense this year, why not consider a special night at home.  Put the kids down, pray that they stay down, and then enjoy some special time alone.  Maybe play a board game you used to love.  Maybe share a special dessert or do one of our favorites, a crazy TV show marathon and watch four episodes of whatever it is that floats your boat these days.

Or you could try a romantic movie night right in your own Lazyboys with a Valentine’s Day gift box from Movie Noodle!  How fun would it be to order one for your spouse, have it arrive and then open it together and unwrap the fun.  Each Valentine’s Day gift box comes complete with a giftwrapped Valentine’s Day DVD of your choice, 3 bags of microwave popcorn, 1 movie theater popcorn tub (and you know it tastes better out of that tub), 1 16 ounce coke or sprite, 2 boxes of movie theater candy, 1 pack of Hershey’s kisses, 1 box of Necco hearts, 2 lollypops, 1 chocolate rose, and a personalized note from you.  Bring your own bubbly.

What a thoughtful and affordable way to show your spouse that even after more than two years you still feel the happiness boost!  That’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.

And to get one lucky reader’s Valentine’s Day started off right, we’re giving away on Movie Noodle Valentine’s Day Package!  Want to enter?  Enter via our easy Rafflecopter widget below!

Love to Home Swap!

Think you can’t afford to go abroad and take your family?  Think again.

For a few years we had an absolutely wonderful neighbor who lived above us in our building.  Suzanne is from Paris.  She is an actress, married to a Physicist and they have two beautiful children.  When they wanted to travel in the summer what did they do?  They signed up on a home exchange website…you know, like the one Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet used in the movie The Holiday…and they went.  And saved a ton of money.  And had so much more space to stay with their active family than they would have in a little hotel room.  I had never really considered a house swap before Suzanne brought it up.  I mean…it’s kind of weird right?  Someone you don’t know coming and staying in your home? I mean…weird.  Right?

But you know why we think that way?  We’re Americans.  And we’re uptight.  We worry about our stuff breaking and stains on our sofas and what might go wrong more than other people around the world do.  And because of that, we may miss out on wonderful experiences. I really believe that.  I think the Europeans are way more loosey goosey…and possibly more adventurous than we are…and as a result, maybe they live more exciting lives than we do. They certainly pay less to travel!

Last summer when we were first thinking of a trip to France we looked at a few home exchange sites, but we never joined one.  Still feeling too uptight.  Still not sure. But we rented an apartment in Paris for so much less than we would have paid for a hotel.  We had tons more space which with a child is just so wonderful.  We saved money on food because we had a kitchen, stove and refrigerator.  And we had the experience of shopping for groceries in Paris!  I love a swanky hotel room as much as the next gal, but so much about that experience made me think that this is the way to go!  Especially with a family.  You Mamas know that little kids need room to spread out and run around and sprawl and nap.  And I just don’t know how you do that in a tiny European hotel room. But you can do that in even a modest European apartment.  And who says you have to limit your destinations to Europe?

So. When Love Home Swap approached me at the end of the summer to review their site…I signed up…sort of halfway.  I browsed through the amazing properties available to swap and pretty much thought “yeah no one is going to want to stay in our crummy apartment…”  And then people started inquiring.  And I thought, holy cow this might work!  I cleaned the apartment, waited for a bright sunny day, took some photos and said to myself, “you know, maybe this apartment isn’t so crummy after all.”  And sure enough, a lovely woman from Scotland who has a beautiful home in the country, wrote to us.  We exchanged several emails…and long story short I think we’re heading to the Scottish Countryside this summer.

Love Home Swap runs on a subscription basis.  You can get a fourteen day trial for $30.  But it costs nothing to browse and see the homes that are listed.  So how does a home swap work?  Create your profile.  Say a little bit about who you are, where you want to go and when, and what your home and neighborhood are like.  Upload pics of your home (or your vacation home or lakeside cabin) at its best.  Then wait for offers to come in.  Or go looking for homes that strike your fancy and reach out.  Once you join if you connect via Facebook, Love Home Swap will even show you homes that are owned by friends of Facebook friends.  So that whole creepy stranger staying in your apartment thing…is a little bit less.

So I think we’re gonna do it.  We’ll pack up the breakables and jump off a cliff. Because if you spend your whole life sitting around thinking about what might happen if…then it seems like you never actually do.  And this year I’m kinda all about the doing.

Oh and all the photos in this post?  Yeah they’re homes that are available for swaps on Love Home Swap.

A little adventure in the Scottish Highlands.  That’s something Mamas and Babies definitely gotta have.

The The Heart of Hickory Farms – Much More Than Summer Sausage

Last week I wrote about our family tradition of buying my Pop-Pop soap on a rope, Old Spice, and Hickory Farms gift baskets for Christmas. So now that everything’s half price at the mall…might I suggest picking up a basket for Super Bowl snacking?  Sure when I think Hickory Farms, I usually think of beef sticks and cheese.  And it’s true.  You want summer sausage?  Hickory Farms’ Signature Summer Sausage was recently rated the number one Summer Sausage in America, winning the Masters of Taste Gold Medal for Superior Taste, in 2011.  And let me tell you, when we broke it out for dinner on Christmas Eve, it was absolutely delicious.

But what I was surprised to discover upon surfing the Hickory Farms site, is that Hickory Farms offers a wide variety of delicious gourmet food baskets that would be a great accompaniment to any elegant winter event.  Say…your 2013 Super Bowl party?

The gorgeous Hickory Holiday Cheer Basket, for example, comes with the classic summer sausage, but also shortbread, cheddar cheese, salted pistachios and a bottle of Bogle Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon.  Fancy, no?  You see where I’m going here.  I can eat nachos and seven layer taco dip when called upon.  But a gourmet basket like this would be a hit with both Doc Hubby and me on Superbowl Sunday when let’s hope I’ll be watching that cute Tom Brady run around in tight pants…I mean, when his beloved Pats hopefully will be vying for a ring.

Until very recently I also wasn’t aware of the wonderful ways in which Hickory Farms is giving back–during the holidays and throughout the year.  For each Party Planner Gift Box sold this holiday season, Hickory Farms donated $5 to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign.  To date, the donations total more than 1.9 million dollars.  Hickory Farms also has a partnership with Operation Gratitude – a national nonprofit that creates care packages for military men and women and their families.  And this holiday season they have offered free shipping to military APO and FPO addresses on eight of their products, including their box of Colossal Cashews.  Yum!

My Pop-Pop was a minister.  He lived his life in service of others.  How wonderful to discover that without even knowing it, our traditional Christmas gift to him was a gift that gave back.

Hickory Farms and Soap on a Rope – Baskets of Holiday Traditions

“I just saw soap on a rope and thought of your Pop-Pop.”

My friend Gretchen texted this to me a few days ago while she was out Christmas shopping.  It’s funny how our Christmas shopping and gift giving traditions can become so much a part of our holiday experience that even our friends know about them.  I bought my grandfather, Pop-Pop, soap on a rope and Old Spice aftershave every year for about fifteen years I’d say.  Gretchen has been on the quest for soap on a rope with me on more than one Black Friday morning.  He’s been gone for three years, and boy do I wish I were still heading out to find it for him.

For my brother and me, when the Hickory Farms kiosk arrives at the Susquehanna Valley Mall not far from our hometown, memories of Pop-Pop always come along with it.  For several years before he passed away, and when he wasn’t going through the Old Spice quite as quickly any more, Wes and I teamed up to get him a Hickory Farms Gift Basket for Christmas.  At a certain point, as happens so often, my grandparents’ cozily cluttered house had no more room for “World’s Best Pop-Pop” mugs and “Gone Fishin'” wall hangings.  Pop-Pop and Nana began telling us more stories behind their beloved antiques and heirlooms and sending us home with our trunks full every time we visited.  And as they looked to pass along their treasures to us, our gifts to them became smaller and designed to bring joy we could share in the here and now.  For a meat and potatoes, fishing and hunting, raconteur and all-around sport like Pop-Pop, a Hickory Farms Gift Basket was the perfect gift.  Terrific for munching on while watching Lawrence Welk.  Great to crack out and share when a neighbor stopped by.  A satisfying evening supper on those days when the big meal was eaten after church on Sunday.

We were recently sent The Party Planner Gift Box, a gourmet sampler that includes a selection of sausages, cheeses, mustard and nuts.  But much as I love Pennsylvania Dutch style Gouda, I didn’t open it immediately.  To me, these gift boxes are meant to be shared.  We’ll take it up to my in-laws on Sunday, and on Monday when we come back from the Christmas Eve service at a church that’s not my childhood church, accompanied my grown-up extended family and my daughter in her Christmas dress and shiny shoes, we’ll open each little snack package and spread it all out.  When I think of noshing after the Christmas Eve service.  I think of crackers and cheese.  And Pop-Pop.  He won’t be there.  But after sixty years, Hickory Farms still will.

Some holiday traditions pass.  Others stay on with us.  But the people we shared them with never really leave us do they?  As long as there’s soap on a rope on the shelves and beef sticks at the mall, our simple, sometimes silly, always heartfelt traditions and memories will stay with us. And that’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.

Find Hickory Farms gift baskets online at or at mall kiosks all over the U.S.

Last Minute Gift for Geek Moms

I’m a geek.

A huge, nerdy, bespectacled, geek.

And now, a Geek Mom. So how excited was I to receive a copy of “Geek Mom: Projects, Tips, and Adventures for Moms and Their 21st-Century Families?”

Heh. Snort. (Pushes glasses back on nose). Super excited.

Natania Barron, Kathy Ceceri, Corrina Lawson and Jenny Williams, the editors of the wildly popular GeekMom Blog have written an engaging, funny, practical and crazy geeky book for all of us out there who want to get our geek on with our kids.  If you didn’t know that “The Hobbit” opened last Friday, this may not be the book for you.  If you got advanced tickets, suffice it to say that this book boasts a section entitled “Throwing a Hobbit Feast.”  Under selecting the menu: “Three to five good cheeses…Enough boiled eggs for one person at least…Pickled things…Meaty things…Bread.”  Are you asking yourself, “what about second breakfast and elevenses” yet?

And from Corrina Lawson in her post Geek Mom: What the book means to me:”

“I’m incredibly proud of  the whole book, though I’m especially fond of my Teaching History Through Superheroes project. I love Natania Barron‘s advice on creating a steampunk costume by thrift store shopping, and Jenny Williams’ ode to Ada Lovelace and Kathy Ceceri’s cool project on creating sparks in the microwave. Yes, you can try this at home.”

By now you should be getting a really good indication if this book is for you, Mama.

But seriously, Geek Mom offers far more than a chance for Mama to simply get her nerd on.  It is full of projects and advice, home-science experiments and superheroes, games and tips.  And even if you’ve never cracked a Sci-Fi book or seen an episode of “Battlestar Gallactica”, if you’re a creative, clever, thought-ful parent, you’ll dig this book.

“Being geeky is all about exploring the world with endless curiosity.  Geek Mom is your invitation to introducing the same sense of wonder and imagination to the next generation.”

So.  If you’re looking for a last minute gift for that mom in your life who loves to get her geek on, and by that, the editors of this book mean that gal who when she gets involved in something, gets really involved in it…pick up a copy of Geek Mom.  Christmas is just a few days away, so here’s where you geeks may need to take a step back.  Sure you could probably get it really fast from our affiliate Amazon or even gift the kindle edition, but hey.  Why not put on a coat, grab a cup of coffee, and head down to your local bookstore and pick one up in real life.  While you’re at it, you can geek out over all of the other real live, hard copy books in front of you.  Sure your glasses might fog up when you come in from the cold.

But trust me.  It will be worth it.

Last Minute Gifts for Guys from

Movie Noodle Pick a Flick Package

Let’s face it.  Boys are hard to shop for.  Well, older ones anyway.  My nephews and godson are now outgrowing legos and Star Wars figures and it’s really tough to know what to get them.  Especially if you kinda don’t want to get them video games.  Which I kinda don’t.

Not to mention husbands and brothers-in-law and uncles and dads.  So how lame would it be to buy my husband Season Three of “Battlestar Galactica” for Christmas when I got him Season Two for his Birthday? Way lame? Well…maybe…

When it comes to gifts for guys, a DVD is probably a good idea. An even better idea? Throw in some food. Let’s face it. Guys like to watch TV. Guys like to watch movies. Guys like sports. Guys like to eat. Stereotypical? Kinda. True? At least in this house it is.

So this Christmas, consider a gift from the awesome movie themed gift box company, Movie Noodle! Movie Noodle offers customizable, movie-themed gift boxes complete with a DVD or DVD set of the buyer’s choice. Each package comes stuffed with candy, popcorn and soda, as well as a few novelty items to complement the theme of your package, and a new DVD, of course. Once your package arrives, just open it up and unwrap everything you need to have a movie night right in your own home…without the cost of a babysitter!

Movie Noodle Poker Night Package

For the guy’s-guy consider the Football Movie Night, Poker Movie Night, Baseball Movie Night, Nascar Movie Night, or even…and here I’m about to give you dream girl status…the Horror Movie Night. Yes, you would officially be the best girlfriend/wife/mom/aunt ever if you gave the guy in your life a Movie Noodle Horror Movie Night package for Christmas. Also hot with guys are the “For Him” Packages which include a Mission Impossible Package, Die Hard Package, The Office Package, Batman Package and Beverly Hills Cop Package. You say he’s seen these movies already? Yeah, have you ever noticed how guys will, in the midst of channel surfing, land on “The Bourne Identity” about an hour into the movie, and watch it again? And again? And again? Yeah he’ll dig the “Die Hard” Package.

Movie Noodle Horror Movie Night Package
You got a week and a few days, girls.  Movie Noodle ships within 24 hours of purchase, via priority mail.  And if you can find a package that you’d both like (The Office Marathon anyone?), you may also have bought yourself a fun New Years Eve activity after the kids are in bed!

A cool, basically clutter-free, gift for guys that they don’t wear to work?  Yeah, that’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.
