Tiny Love for Your Little Napper — Introducing the 3-in-1 Rocker Napper

The Tiny Love 3-in-1 Rocker Napper delivers both a plush, cozy seat and a comfortable bassinet for your sweet baby.  The flat napper position with raised sides provides a safe, comfortable area for your baby to sleep, and it transitions smoothly into a seat (or back again) with only one hand!  With three reclining positions, soothing music, calming vibrations, and gentle rocking, the Rocker Napper will rock your baby to sleep naturally.

MD loves the musical mobile with adorable plush snail rattle and sunshine mirror…and the straps help keep my climber in place for a bit longer!  The Rocker Napper has nine different baby-activated tunes and lights to keep your baby stimulated and to encourage sensory development.  The music ranges from upbeat to soothing, so you can choose the one that is best for your child, and the adjustable arm allows you to move the mobile within reach.

I love that the frame is extremely sturdy, and that you can change it to a rocking or a stable position.  But, the best part is that the super-soft neutral bassinet and sleeping pad are machine-washable!  And in my world, that is the only kind of material I can handle!

Tiny Love has really impressed me…and that is becoming difficult.  We have a pack ‘n’ play, a vibrating chair, a bassinet, and a swing, but the Tiny Love 3-in-1 Rocker Napper has it all…it vibrates and rocks in both chair and bassinet positions, and it has a mobile that rivals any I have seen on any other product.  Priced around $85, it makes a perfect baby shower gift.  Even better, because of its sturdy frame and material, the Rocker Napper will hold up to 40 pounds!

Go get your tiny love this amazing product today!  You will not be disappointed…and it only takes about 10 minutes to put it together…so you can start using it almost immediately (and your little climber can enjoy the box while you set it up)!

Thanks to Tiny Love for the chance to try out this amazing product!

Kristin’s Baby Registry & Baby Gift Guide

Expecting a baby boy? Here’s Kristin’s list of must-have baby items that would make great baby shower gifts or baby gifts for that new little bundle of wiggles and giggles in your life!  Enjoy!

I have been asked by many friends, “What are the items you just cannot live without as a new mom?”  I started compiling a list.  There are just so many great baby products on the market, and this list certainly does not encompass them all.  Soon, I’ll assemble a list for the older boys…but for now, these are the things I cannot live without with my baby boy.

The Fun

The Bumper Jumper has been a lifesaver for both of my boys.  It allows us to have conversations as adults, to eat dinner peacefully, to shower quickly, and to use the bathroom alone!  I cannot even say how important this tiny item has been in our lives.  We take it with us to everyone else’s houses as well.  If your doors do not have trim, however, then this will not work for you.  Instead, may I recommend the Rainforest Jumperoo, which we bought for our nephew.  The Jumperoo even collapses to make storage and travel easier.  Just be sure to follow the weight and height recommendations with both, please.  If your baby cannot hold up his head, the Bumper Jumper is not appropriate for him yet.

Many might say that the Bumper Jumper and Exersaucer are redundant, but we use both equally. Typically, the Exersaucer allows MD more entertainment, so he plays in it while I make dinner, and he used to play in it during dinner (now he eats with us in his high chair).  We were given a hand-me-down exersaucer, so the one we have no longer exists to buy, but there are SO many different ones.  Ours adjusts to three heights, which is great for those tall babies.  And, MD can spin a full 360 degrees in it.  None of the sounds work anymore, but MD does not care.  He will play in it for thirty minutes at a time.  I used to shower while CW was in it, but now it’s too hard to lug up our stairs (we moved since the time when CW was little).

Another must-have for a newborn (really great to crawling and beyond…in fact, CW at age 3 still likes to play in it) is the Baby Einstein Play Gym.  Play mats are so awesome that we actually had two (one for our basement and one for the main floor).  The Baby Einstein play gym was our favorite, though.  Both kids loved the “star” that plays music and lights up, and they would roll to see it wherever we placed it.  MD likes to sit at it and make the toys swing now.  It is great for brain and physical development.

When your baby is about eight months old, you may want to start teaching him to communicate with you.  I found these Sign Language Videos to be extremely well done.  They are filled with classical music, real animals and babies, and they do not move fast.  CW learned the basic signs within a month or so (I used them constantly), and MD is already signing “milk” and “dog” consistently.  These were truly a wonderful investment.  Although babies cannot verbalize their thoughts with words, they are able to sign them at a much earlier age.  It saves both the baby and the parents from so many frustrating moments.  Your baby will be able to tell you what he needs, and you will know that you are increasing his vocabulary at a young age!

 The Sleepy

Because we travel often to places where renting cribs is impractical, we bought a Pack ‘n’ Play.  I used it for the first month of MD’s life for changing his diapers in our basement.  This allowed my body to heal after his birth without going up two flights of stairs fifty times a day.  We have taken our Pack ‘n’ Play to a ton of places in the course of four years, and it is very handy; however, keep in mind that Pack ‘n’ Plays are heavy, large, and a bit unwieldy.  They take up a lot of trunk space, even when folded down.  Still, we would not have made it without one.  And although our parents both have cribs at their homes, this would be an ideal idea for at Grandma’s house if she wants a cheaper (and easier to hide when you’re not there) version of a crib.

For the first few months, your baby will sleep in Sleep Sacks and Swaddle Me sleepwear the best.  We used the Swaddle Me for the first 1-2 months, and then the sleep sacks after that.  The sleep sacks are great for quick nighttime diaper changes, and the Swaddle Me is so much easier than trying to perfect the nurses’ swaddles from the hospital (and then you don’t have to worry about your baby somehow getting loose)!  These come in many different patterns, colors, and materials.

 The Helpful

Something I used often with CW, but use one hundred times more with MD is the Baby Bjorn.  I grocery shop, cook, walk, Swiffer, and dust with him in the Bjorn.  He can go everywhere I can go, and I have my hands free to do other things.  This is great because his older sibling often needs help, or wants to play outside.  And, I often want to get something accomplished, but he is too heavy to hold all the time.  CW can ride his bike, while I walk with MD in the Bjorn…that way I can get to CW with more ease than a stroller allows (I also found that CW would constantly run into the stroller because he can’t steer straight).  The Bjorn allows me to place CW in the stroller for longer trips at the mall.  And, MD loves watching everything that is going on around us.  Again, they come in many different styles and colors (and can be used with very small babies (8 lbs.) and up to 25 lbs.!

Something that is not a necessity, but I personally could not live without is the Glider Rocking Chair (with a footstool).  I spend a ton of time in that rocking chair (feeding, reading, and rocking).  Both boys love the chair, and I love putting my feet up and laying my head back while I’m doing my middle-of-the-night feedings.

The Practical

Although I nursed full time with both boys, I would imagine the Boppy Pillow could be helpful to all mothers (as I have seen many mothers lay their babies in the pillow on the floor, and I often place it behind MD so he doesn’t fall over backwards).  But, I could not live without my Boppy Pillow for nursing.  MD is so heavy that I find my hands fall asleep if I have to nurse him without the Boppy for long.  Something else that is very helpful for nursing mothers is the nursing cover, or hooter hider.  It is great for providing privacy while feeding your baby out in public, or even with friends and family.  I will admit that I used it much more with CW.  I was more comfortable with my breastfeeding status as a second-time mom.  Many are so pretty they can even be considered a fashion accessory.  There are many colors and designs, so enjoy the search!

When you look at infant carrier car seats, you will most likely be overwhelmed by all of the choices.  I have heard great things about many companies, but I was most impressed by the Chicco KeyFit30.  It has three heights to adjust to and goes up to 30 pounds.  It is so simple to attach the base to your car, and even easier to put the seat into the base.  And, there is a converter to place it into my favorite jogging stroller, The Bob Revolution Stroller.  We do not have one of these jogging strollers (we have a different brand that did not allow the car seat to sit in it), but rented one at the beach a few years in a row and love it.  The front wheel can be stationary or moving, the handles are comfortable, and the seat is cushy for your little ones.  It had the least friction while running, and seemed to have the best shocks to protect your baby from those big bumps!  Easy to maneuver and fun to use, it is my favorite jogging stroller by far!

Poppet Baby Wear for Your Little Poppets

MD in Poppet Baby Wear

Winter arrives, complete with snow, wind, and freezing temperatures.  If you have had to switch out your child’s entire sleeping wardrobe, to include thick, warm fleecy sleepwear, you are not alone.  But, if you purchase a Baby Merino Handmade Sleep Gown from New Zealand based company Poppet Baby Wear, you will not have this dilemma anymore.

The Baby Merino Sleep Gown is perfect for young babies.  It has a draw string tie at the bottom to allow for quick diaper changes in the middle of the night.  The sleep gown is handmade in New Zealand out of New Zealand Merino wool, which is made to breathe and keep baby warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  It automatically regulates the baby’s body heat to a safe and comfortable temperature throughout the day and night.

MD in the Merino Kids Sleep Bag

My little guy, MD, is a little too busy for this sleep gown anymore, because he wants to free his legs, and likes to chew on the draw string tie.  But, it works perfectly when paired with the Merino Kids sleep bag, previously reviewed here.  And, I can’t wait to try it out in the rustic cabins of Blackwater Falls State Park during our annual X-country skiing trip (they are freezing…I often sleep in long underwear, hat, and wool socks).  MD will be the warmest of the bunch!  Maybe I’ll even buy him this Merino Kids hat or the Poppet Baby Wear Hat to go with it!  Then, he will be warm all night long, instead of sweating while the fire burns hot, and then freezing once only embers remain!

MD in Merino Kids Sleep Bag

These make perfect baby shower gifts!  You really can’t beat the quality, soft feel of the sleep gown (it really is one of the softest materials I’ve ever felt, and does not bother my children’s sensitive skin)!  Thank you to Poppet Baby Wear for sending me a Baby Merino Sleep Gown to try!

The Best Baby Monitor for a Good Night’s Sleep

I remember that feeling so well…you are wheeled out of the hospital with your new baby in your arms and then the orderly just turns around and leaves.  You.  Alone.  With your baby. “You mean they are just going to let me take it home?” Bring on the anxiety. Here, Kristin reviews an innovative new monitor from Babies Gotta Have It favorite, Tommee Tippee that goes a long way to calming those new baby nerves. Thanks so much Tommee Tippee for providing the monitor for review!

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Baby Monitor

A sense of peace and a newborn do not really go hand in hand.  But, with the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Monitor you can sleep more peacefully knowing that your baby is safely sleeping in his crib.

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Baby Monitor

This innovative video monitor allows parents to have a bit more peace of mind when they leave the nursery.  The key feature of the monitor is its unique sensor pad. Before set up, parents need to take the time to read the directions carefully (and there are a ton of them) so that they adjust the sensor mat to the best possible setting for their baby.  Designed to sit under the baby’s crib mattress, the pad monitors your child and sounds an alarm if no movement has been detected after 20 seconds. Most parents benefit from the sensor pad when their baby is a newborn. However, once the baby can move freely around the crib, parents can choose to remove the sensor pad and use the monitor as a stand-alone model.

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Monitor

Parents can also change the sensor-pad sensitivity levels if the mattress is thicker than the suggested amount.  Although I read many reviews of the sensor pad and people complained that they had many false alarms (one sounds on the parent unit and one on the baby unit), I did not have this experience.  I did forget to turn off the sensor pad once when I took MD out of the crib and the alarms went off then…they scared me nearly to death…but I felt better knowing it was definitely working and that I would be able to get to MD more quickly if he had a breathing problem during the night.

In fact, our nephew just had open-heart surgery and we highly recommended the Tommee Tippee monitor with the sensor pad.  He was having breathing problems when he first came back from the hospital, and we thought it would ease his parents’ minds to have a video monitor that responds to his movement in his room.  This monitor is ideal for parents of high-risk babies!

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Monitor

The monitor also has a great “talk-back” feature that you can use to talk to your baby from another room.  This has actually worked great for our 3-year-old son, CW, more than for our baby, but it is a great feature.  And we love being able to see our boys on the large screen!  We can tell if MD is really upset when he wakes up early from a nap, or if looks like he’ll fall back to sleep.  And, when we used the monitor in CW’s room, we were able to see if he was actually napping or not (and tell him to go to sleep using the speaker function)!  This is particularly nice when I am nursing MD and cannot go up to CW’s room to give him that “go back to sleep or else” glare!

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Pad Baby Monitor

My two favorite features of the monitor, though, are the adjustable baby night light on the monitor and the temperature sensor for the nursery!  This has been really helpful for us, as MD’s room tends to be the coolest room in our house.

Although the monitor states that it has automatic channel changing to decrease interference, we did have severe interference with our other video monitor (even though the other video monitor still worked, the TT monitor no longer transmitted the sounds CW was making).  So, if you have another video monitor, be aware that there could be interference between the two.

Overall, I highly recommend the the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Video Sensor Mat Monitor (available at Toys R Us), and it will certainly give new parents a sense of peace when they bring their newborn home!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bags. If Only They Came In Adult Sizes Too.

Thanks to the  folks at babysleepbags.com and Merino Kids, here’s another great review by Kristin and little MD…who is getting bigger! I’ve been singing the praises of wearable blankets or sleep sacks for a few years and they are widely available now in a great selection of styles and fabrics…I’ll post my very own walk down memory lane video at the bottom of Kristin’s review.  I haven’t tried Merino wool, but after reading this I think I need some new long underwear!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bags

If you are a new mom, then chances are you’ve heard of sleep sacks.  You may have even tried a few.  They typically come in many colors, sizes, and some have the option to swaddle.  But, I bet that you haven’t tried Merino Kids Sleep Bags.  And if you haven’t, then you should!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag on babysleepbags.com

Maybe you’ve heard of Merino wool…the soft, all-natural, biodegradable fabric that regulates your temperature and allows your body to breathe?  My family swears by Merino wool for our annual cross-country skiing trip.  In fact, even though I have extremely sensitive skin, my Merino wool long underwear has never bothered my skin.  So with that in mind, when I was given the opportunity to try a Merino Kids Sleep Bag for MD, I was ecstatic (I know it may not seem that exciting, but trust me, it is)!

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag at babysleepbags.com

With the cooler temperatures of fall, we often relish the time without either the air conditioning or heat.  And during this time of year, sleep sacks are a great option.  As the fall temperatures drop, so do the temperatures in MD’s room (and although we should probably turn on the heat, I just can’t quite justify it yet).  Instead, I broke out the Merino Kids Sleep Bag, placed him in a long-sleeved onesie, zipped him in, put on a little hat, and into the crib he went.  The soft, all-natural fabric did not bother his sensitive skin, and he woke up with a huge smile!  Best of all, there are snaps at the top of the bag so that it doesn’t have to go over his head and it becomes snug around the arms.  The zipper goes 2/3 of the way around and makes it easy for those middle-of-the-night diaper changes.

Even better, the Merino Kids Sleep Bag ranges in sizes from newborn to older toddler, and is effective between temperatures of 59-68 degrees!  If you have a toddler who wriggles out of their blankets and sheets, this is a perfect option.  And, if you want to be able to take them from the car seat or stroller to bed, there is a “pocket” feature that allows the safety strap to easily slide through the legs!  Perfect for kids, great for peace of mind.  If only they had one for adults, then when my husband steals the covers at night, I would be toasty warm!

Sleep Pretty & Sleep Safe – aden + anais Sleep Sacks Giveaway

If you are a new or expecting parent, odds are that you’re doing some reading about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. My understanding has always been that SIDS is a bit mysterious. Doctors can recommend steps to sharply decrease the incidence of SIDS, but can’t really explain what causes it.  The good news is that the wicked smart docs at Children’s Hospital Boston have just published new research linking SIDS to low serotonin production in the brainstem. The great news is that this finding may lead to a concrete test to identify babies at high risk for SIDS, bringing us another step closer to eradicating this devastating syndrome.

The CJ Foundation for SIDS has given millions of dollars to support SIDS research and provide public education and awareness about SIDS risk reduction.  As the largest non-governmental funder of programs meeting the needs of the SIDS community, they participated in funding the research cited above. And I am so excited to share with you the CJ Foundation’s new initiative: Sleep in Safety, Grow in Style. According to the SSGS site,

“The CJ Foundation’s Sleep in Safety, Grow in Style campaign
aims to

educate consumers and
raise public awareness about
what constitutes a safe sleep environment for infants.
We will help parents and caregivers learn how to create nurseries with style
and safe sleeping environments for babies that can cost less, be beautiful and
comforting, grow with your child, and most importantly
significantly reduce the risk of SIDS and
other sleep related infant deaths.”

Let’s decorate our babies’ nurseries with an eye toward style and sleep safety! SSGS offers a webpage with Design Safety Tips as well as Sleep Safety Tips. Let me share their list of Sleep Safety Guidelines with you here (check out the site for more detail about each guideline:

  • Always lay your baby to sleep face up
  • Remove all loose bedding, bumpers, stuffed animals, and pillows from the crib
  • Don’t let your baby get too hot
  • Control room temperature where baby is sleeping
  • Consider using a fan to increase circulation in baby’s room
  • Lay your baby to sleep in an approved crib, on a firm-fitting mattress
  • Don’t share sleep surfaces
  • Don’t smoke while pregnant and never smoke near your infant
  • Create a healthy lifestyle for you and your baby
  • If possible, breastfeed your baby
  • Offer your baby a pacifier at all sleep times
  • Put your baby on his or her tummy to play when your baby is awake and supervised
  • Share these tips with everyone who cares for your baby

aden + anais cozy sleeping bag

One of my favorite baby and toddler products companies, aden + anais, has partnered with SSGS to promote safe sleep. The CJ Foundation recommends the use of wearable blankets and sleepsacks in place of blankets to keep infants warm while sleeping. Each aden + anais cozy sleeping bag is made of 100% breathable muslin cotton, which allows baby’s body temperature to adjust naturally, reducing the risk of overheating. This time of the year I feel like I am always cold. And I have really turned to sleepsacks and wearable blankets to keep my Little Bean warm and snuggy in the winter months without overheating her to a dangerous degree.  aden + anais sleeping bags are the perfect solution, and the muslin they are made of just gets softer and softer with each wash. I have absolutely observed this with the washcloths I bought on babysteals.com! So what’s the deal with muslin?  This ancient fabric, traditional for swaddling, has an open, loose weave that is breathable and allows air to circulate around your baby.

And their mod, stylish patterns are to die for. No need to sacrifice appearance when you add these wearable blankets to your nursery. They are adorable.  And I’m delighted announce that the great people behind aden + anais are giving one Babies Gotta Have It a sleeping bag of your choice! Want to enter? Read on!

Babies Bottom Line Review – Lilitah Baby & Toddler Blankets

Lilitah Blankets Who would have thought that sleep could be so complicated? I mean, sure, I often have trouble falling asleep.  And I have always been a night owl.  I can remember sneaking out into the living room and hiding behind the sofa while my parents watched “Roots” because I just wasn’t sleepy.

Should it surprise me, then, that my baby girl stays up jabbering and singing the Elmo theme in her bed…often for hours and hours and hours?  In many ways, she is absolutely my girl.

So when the generous folks at Lilitah offered to send me one of their blankets to try, I leapt at the chance.  What’s so special about Lilitah Blankets?  In their own words:

Lilitah Harmony Symbols and Blankets are precisely designed to lower your stress, help you sleep, and create happiness and contentment.  Science has shown that your unconscious responds to symbols, not words, and Lilitah Harmony Symbols have the ability to enhance, instill, and create feelings of always being safe to experience life,  with the freedom of being who you are, all while developing the courage to move forward.  Lilitah Harmony Symbols help to clear nightmares and create lucid dreaming.

Indeed, Lilitah claims that when your baby is snuggled in one of their blankets, the embroidered symbols will help them feel safe, calm and soothed.  They encourage you to wrap your  newborn in one to be passed from person to person to create a cocoon of safety and warmth around them.  They also claim the blankets help relieve nightmares, contribute to solving sleep problems in children, help speed up healing, and alleviate the effects of jet lag.  My little Bean was sent the gorgeous, plush polka dot “I’m A Big Kid” blanket pictured above.   I have posted about the value of super snuggly blankets for babies and Mamas, and let me just say that this Lilitah blanket is divine.  It has all 12 symbols attractively embroidered on it, and just could not be any more soft, silky, plush and snuggly.  It is, in fact, one of the Berkshire Blankets that I featured in my blanket post. The polka dot pattern is gorgeous and I love it. It is a beautifully made blanket.

Lilitah Waffle Baby BlanketThe baby blankets Lilitah offers are also exquisite, as you can see. I love this “Waffles Please” design which is embroidered with the symbols for Clearing, Heart and Joy.

So I imagine you’re wondering if this blanket has indeed solved my child’s sleep problems.  Now let me say, that we have had it for the months of June and July.  This blanket is thick and plush and warm.  I haven’t had it in her bed at night, simply because she would swelter and that would not do any of us any good.  I have used it as a receiving blanket after bath time, to sit on and cuddle with as we brush hair and read books and it has contributed to making that pre-bed time ritual soothing, calm, and special for us.  The blanket has been hanging on a chair right next to the baby’s crib while she sleeps, and I have to say, she is still having troubles going down at night.  She does, however, (and in fact always has) sleep nearly twelve hours at night so that’s really nothing to complain about.  I am eager to see how the blanket serves us this winter when she’s actually wrapped up in it.  I’ll let you know.

That said, here’s a little story for you.  Two  nights ago, my friend Rebecca was making us a wonderful dinner in the apartment.  It was sweltering hot, the lights were off in the living room, and the Bean was fritzing a bit, hurling herself into her little foam arm chair and goofing around. Suddenly, with the speed of an Olympic gymnast, she rocketed into the chair, over the stuffed arm, and landed with some force on the hardwood floor, directly on her forehead. She screamed and a freakish goose egg the size of a golf ball appeared on her sweet little forehead. After calls to the doctor and many exams from Doc Hubby, we determined no trip to the ER was necessary.  We woke her up every hour until midnight and she was alert (albeit exhausted) but fine. I, however, was traumatized.  I couldn’t let her sleep alone. But we have no mattress or sofa in her room.  So I spread the Lilitah blanket on the braid rug, plopped down my pillow, and the girl who snuck into the living room to watch “Roots” actually slept for six hours on a hardwood floor. Let me say, that night I was pretty glad to be surrounded by Protection, Joy, Heart, Abundance, Creativity, Gratitude and Receiving.
