Amp Up Your Apps: Part 2

Resident tech adviser Kristin is here to review two more great apps for parents and kids!

*Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 ($4.99 on iPad)

Learn Chinese Toy Story 3 App on iTunes

You’ve seen the research that says that children can learn languages much more quickly than adults.  Well now your kids can learn to speak and read Chinese with Woody and Buzz Lightyear, all while they think they’re playing a game!  The story is presented in five levels, the first is all in English, and each subsequent level adds more Chinese words, until the fifth level is all in Chinese.  CW loves level 2 and repeating the random words that are written in Chinese.

CW learns Chinese with the Toy Story 3 App

Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 is read aloud to your child with fun graphics and sound effects.  Your child can learn about the tonal marks, hear phrases and words in context (and out of context as well), record themselves, and receive stickers for meeting certain goals!  And if your child is not quite ready for reading, they will enjoy having the story read aloud to them (you can do it, or it can be done automatically).  CW begs to use the iPad for this game, and I figure that it certainly cannot hurt!  And, if he learns a few Chinese words, then it’s worth every penny!

Thanks to Disney Language Learning for allowing me to try this amazing App.

*Safety 1st Baby Book App: free

Safety 1st Baby Book App

With this Baby Book app, you can digitize your entire life, including those precious baby memories.  While, I still like the hard copy baby book, the Safety 1st Baby Book app does make my life easier.  I capture the moments on my phone, and then I can transfer them later into the baby book, without the fear of forgetting those important dates and milestones.  Plus, I can use my phone pictures to customize each milestone!

The Safety 1st Baby Book app is simple to use, and is also a helpful resource for tips and articles about your baby’s development.  Although I think it would be great if the app had a place to document immunizations, milestones, and other important developments with prompts and sections like a regular baby book (you can do so in the Notes section, but it does not prompt you for specific information), it is still a great resource and place to keep information all in one place.  And, the price is right.

Amp Up Your Apps With WebMD and The Snow Ball

Here’s another great review from up and coming tech experts Kristin and CW!

Is There a Doctor Available?

I have come to the conclusion that I may be an app junkie!  I love new apps on my phone, and there are a number of apps that I can’t live without.  One of those apps is the new WebMD Baby app!  And if you’re at all like me, you will love this app because it is so simple to use and it’s completely free!  There are weekly tips (this week’s tip for MD is about naps and bedtime struggles…SO timely for us) and daily Doctor tips!  Plus, you can access all of the great information from WebMD about health and wellness questions, as well as an illnesses and emergencies section.  There are other sections Just for Moms, Just for Dads, Parenting Tips, Baby Week by Week, Ask the Pediatrician, Milestones, Vaccines, and Baby Doctor Visits.

Next time you have a question about symptoms, instead of “googling” them, go straight to your WebMD app and see what the experts say.

CW Has fun With "The Snow Ball" App

Your Child Will Have a Ball with the Digital Book “The Snow Ball”

If you are bored with the books and games for your child on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android Motorola Xoom, or Samsung Galaxy Tab devices, you will be happy to hear that another great quality book and game are available now.  David Steinberg’sThe Snow Ball” digital book is accompanied by an adorable game called “Penguin Attack.”  Check out the trailer here.

“The Snow Ball” can be read aloud to your child, or he can choose to read it himself.  On every page, he can touch the polar bears or penguins and they dance, sled, or say cute phrases.  The book is witty with beautiful illustrations by Liz Conrad.  CW laughed at the silly penguins, and especially loved the music selections at the “Snow Day Ball!”  I loved the catchy phrases like, “Thump-thump-galumping.” And, “Balumping on their bellies.  Skit-skat-skadoodle up to Icicle Hall.” The word play is original and fun!

CW Enjoys The Snow Ball App

“Penguin Attack” is great for problem solving and learning early Geometry.  Your child has to try to get the polar bears to the Snow Day Ball without falling in the water holes.  Sounds easy, right?  Well, if it weren’t for all of the penguins that lie between the bears and the ball, it would be easy. Your child has to figure out how to bounce the bears off of the penguins at an angle that will get them into the ball safely.  It is a mixture of pool and bowling, and CW laughs hysterically every time he plays it.

Before this winter becomes a memory,  check out “The Snow Ball” and pick up the free “Penguin Attack” game too!

Kristin with CW and MDKristin is a former high school English teacher and show choir geek enjoying time as a stay-at-home mom to CW and new baby brother MD.

Kristin received “The Snow Ball” app free for the purpose of review, but as always, her opinion is entirely her own and has not been influenced by anyone!

StinkyKids for Your Stinky Kid – Giveaway

StinkyKids Plush Dolls

Don’t know about yours, but my kid is a sweet sweet girl…aaaaand she’s also a little stinker.  Britt Menzies, a Mama and an artist/entrepreneur, first had the idea for StinkyKids when her daughter Emma requested that Britt paint her as a ballerina.  From that one painting grew an entire world–a world in which a whole gang of SkinkyKids have adventures, get into mishaps, and learn to be “Leaders of Good.”

Affiliate Link - StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors on Amazon

I met the StinkyKids a few weeks ago during an amazing afternoon at the Madame Alexander Factory here in New York City, which happens to be less than a mile from my house and I never ever knew it!  After being set loose on the magical Madame Alexander Heritage Gallery and showroom several NYC bloggers, their kids and I were introduced to Britt Menzies and the StinkyKids.  And I have to say, I entered the showroom with two little boys who, in a room absolutely chock full of the most engaging variety of dolls and stuffed animals–I mean hundreds and hundreds of enticing dolls, went straight for the StinkyKids dolls arrayed on one table to the side.  Britt told us all about her journey to create the StinkyKids, and then went on to read her award-winning first book, StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors. It’s a clever picture book for kids ages 10 and under, in which the StinkyKids get into trouble, but with creativity and help from Mom are able to solve their problems and be leaders for good.  See, this is what I like about these dolls.  They aren’t perfect.  They’re cute and cuddly but sometimes they insist on wearing their bathing suits, get gum in their hair, and are just little stinKers.

StinkyKid Britt

The dolls themselves are plush and cuddly and safe for kids ages 0 and up–hello those hard-to-buy for 18 month olders!  And there are girl StinkyKids and boy StinkyKids…each adorable, each with his or her own personality, interests and look, and each one a Leader of Good.  My daughter giggled with glee when she heard the name StinkyKids, loved the books and trading cards, and put StinkyKid Britt on her Christmas List.  Score!  StinkyKids dolls are available at Barnes and Noble online, Target.com and our affiliate, Amazon.comStinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors and also the second book StinkyKids See a Full Moon can be found at Barnes and Noble in brick and mortar or online, or on Amazon.

And here’s the best news, one Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a StinkyKid doll of her choice and a signed copy of the StinkyKids book, StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors just in time for the holidaysWant to enter?  Read on!

Babies Gotta Have Some Magic

Looking for some magic this holiday season? Check out Kristin’s review below and thanks so much to Baby Magic for the great products to try out!

Baby Magic

From the moment my nephew was born in 2003, we were Baby Magic fans in my family.  We bought it in the large pumper containers, and in bulk from Costco.  My niece and nephew even bought it for my brother for Christmas because he likes the “clean baby smell” so much!  Silly, I know, but there is no baby wash out there that leaves baby smelling quite so clean (and with no residue left behind).

CW Gives Baby Magic Bubble Bath a Try!

And now, Baby Magic is introducing four new products!!  I am so excited about these.  All of Baby Magic products are safe, gentle, and have the unmistakable baby scent (trust me, it lasts even on the “off” days)!  The products are hypoallergenic, Paraben-free, Gluten-free, and produced in the United States!

Baby Magic No Rinse Wash

I was skeptical of the first product, a No-Rinse Wash, but as with all of Baby Magic’s products, I have yet to be disappointed!  The wash is perfect for cleaning on the go, and is specially formulated for baby’s sensitive skin.  The self-foaming application allows you to clean baby’s hair and skin without water!  This, I have found, is priceless when there is a massive diaper blowout in the car!  Instead of using up a massive amount of wipes, I used the foaming wash on MD and he was clean within seconds (with, you guessed it, that wonderful baby scent)!  This morning we found that CW had wet his bed during the night.  Instead of throwing him in the tub, I used the No-Rinse Wash to clean him up – now he smells fresh and clean for the day ahead!  Both of my boys suffer from sensitive skin and react to many soaps and detergents, but neither of them had a reaction to this No-Wash Rinse.  It receives the highest praise in my book (and now I keep a bottle in my car and at home…a travel bottle for the diaper bag would be a great addition to the product line)!

Baby Magic Kids Magic Bubble Bath

The second product, Kids Magic Bubble Bath, led to an extremely excited three-year-old boy!  This tear-free, hypoallergenic bubble bath (sold in Calming Lavender or Bubble Gum Pop scents) left a huge smile on his face!  The bubbles lasted for the whole bath, but did not leave a sticky residue on CW or the tub.  And, I was pleasantly surprised by the Calming Lavender scent.  It was not too strong, but I could smell his clean, lavender scented hair the entire day after using it!  We will be creating some magical bath moments with this in the future!

Baby Magic Medicated Cream-to-Powder for Diaper Rash

Baby Magic’s third new product, the Medicated Patty Cake is their own cream-to-powder baby powder that comes in a medicated formula for children with extra sensitive skin.  This is an effective diaper rash treatment in a non-greasy cream-to-powder formula that leaves baby’s skin smooth and dry.  I loved the little compact in which the Patty Cake comes, and the non-greasy feeling of the ointment.  I was not as impressed by the applicator pads, and found it easier to use my finger to spread the cream.  But, for those who are squeamish of baby bums, the applicator pads would be a great alternative. The scent is so unobtrusive that it does not mask the dirty diaper smell (unlike some other diaper rash ointments that overpower everything, leaving your baby in a dirty diaper much longer than necessary)! The Patty Cake (come on now, the name is so creative and cute) is taking up permanent residence in my diaper bag, because the size of it cannot be beat.

Baby Magic Healing Balm for Eczema

Finally, the Healing Balm for Eczema is enriched with vitamins, aloe, oatmeal, and Shea Butter to help with minor skin irritation and itching due to eczema (which currently affects one in four children)!  The balm is found in an easy stick application to target problem areas on the hands, face, and body.  The applicator looks like a sunblock stick, but does not leave a greasy residue behind.  In fact, I tried it on MD’s forehead where he had a small patch of dry skin and saw a noticeable difference within one day.  I also used it on my hands to treat my hand eczema and noticed a change within two days.  When I’m nursing MD I have my hands on his face, so using a baby-friendly lotion like the Healing Balm is ideal for both of us!

Baby Magic’s new products are available at Toys ‘R’ Us, Babies ‘R’ Us, Amazon.com (our affiliate) and other retailers that can be found at www.BabyMagic.com.  The new products range in price from $3.99 to $6.99!  With the holiday season approaching, these are great for stocking stuffers or as a magical bubbly treat at the end of a long day!  Join in the magic and try one or all of Baby Magic’s new products today!

Cleaning the Blue Whale

I’m back at work again.  Away from home again, but not so far this time.  For most of you the school year has started  Bean begins Pre-K next week and I’ll be home this weekend to help her get ready.

Bean’s wonderful babysitter, Holly Poppins is back, having spent the summer with her mother in England and she has already taken Bean to her very favorite New York City museum, the American Museum of Natural History (or as Bean says, and I can’t bear to correct her, “the muzz-eum of matural history”).  Bean loves the whale.  I think the muzzeum is an awesome destination for preschoolers–it’s grand and huge and has dinosaur bones and empty slightly scary corridors full of animals and native peoples and cross sections of mammoth trees to get lost in.

For Bean’s third birthday party she chose a whale theme.  I think the big blue whale at the Museum of Natural History was the inspiration.

Even the whale needs a baths sometimes.

Bean, Mama will be home on Sunday.  Until then, check out this super neat time lapse video of the blue whale getting a bath.  I love you.

Pamper Yourself and Baby With Bionée

Here’s another terrific review from Kristin. Thanks, Bionée for sending her the samples to try out.

Bionee Certified Organic Skin Care for Pregnancy, Maternity and Baby

Calling all new moms and pregnant women! Time to pamper yourselves and feel completely guilt-free and healthy at the same time. Bionée (née is French for born) is a new skincare brand from the South of France specifically created for pregnant women, new mothers, and babies! The products are organic, completely phthalate, paraben, and synthetic free. All ingredients are safety-certified for pregnant women and babies.

I loved the samples I received, especially since as a new mom I wash my hands about a thousand times a day…and that adds up to very dry hands! So, I’ve been lathering on the Bionée Body Caress and Silhouette Lotions and loving them. They are not greasy, extremely light, and the fragrance is so miniscule that it is really not noticeable (which is good for those of us with massive allergies)! The lotions have been great even for my children who have extremely sensitive skin. Go to Bionée for more information, more products, and to purchase your own. You will not be disappointed!

Mama, I Don’t Like Your Stinky Face – GIVEAWAY

The Natural Dentist - Natural Oral Care

I went to the dentist this morning.  I was in a foul mood.  Long story, culminating in no coffee and too much rain.  I am not fond of the dentist now that my gums are receding and my teeth are sensitive and scraping the inside of my lower front teeth makes me feel like a thousand fingernails are scraping a thousand chalkboards in my mouth.  But with actual pain.  However, my lovely dentist has convinced me that for those very reasons, I must see him more frequently and not less frequently.  My dental insurance actually covers three visits a year.  I am using them, and I must say, the cleanings are so much better.

But the whole gum disease thing.  Is awful.  And it is perhaps the reason that the Bean has been known to say to me moments after awakening me at 6 am, “Mama, I don’t like your stinky face.”  I am fairly certain that gum surgery lies in my future.  But I am all for doing everything I possibly can to prevent that.  And now I’m looking for natural alternatives.

When the people at The Natural Dentist approached me to test their products out, I was delighted.  Their toothpastes, rinses and plaque removers were developed by a dentist who was dedicated to offering his patients oral care products that are natural, effective and safe to use (they are also made in the USA and not tested on animals).  See, I have just learned that many toothpastes include the ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate. Ring any bells?  That’s the stuff that I’ve been all about removing from my daughter’s bubble bath.  Apparently, in the interim, I’ve been eating it daily!  So what’s so bad about SLS? Studies have shown that it can cause skin irritation, hormone imbalance, eye damage, cancer…and it sticks around in your body for a really long time.  Did I mention we’ve been eating it?

So I have been using the Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Antigingivitis Rinse in peppermint twist, twice a day for the last few weeks.  The active ingredient is Aloe and I like how it tastes.  No stinky face comments in recent memory.  And, I am not making this up, the dental hygienist looked in my mouth today and said “your teeth look really clean.”  No dental hygienist has ever said this to me before.  My lovely dentist, while concerned about the bone loss where my gums have receded, actually said (unprompted) that the gums themselves look good.  Due to this rinse?  Hard to say.  But I’ll take it.

The Bean has tried the Groovy Grape Cavity Zapper toothpaste and her exact response was “yum.”  This is a fluoride toothpaste for older kids.  I like that there are no princesses, kitties with bows, or tv cartoon characters on the package.  Simply a grape on a toothbrush under a sun umbrella.  Awesome.

I have given a lot of thought to using natural cleaning, laundry, skincare and haircare products in the last few years.  Especially for my daughter.  I had never considered natural dental products because I feared that they would not be effective.  I’m switching. Period.

Baby’s First Bubble Bath – My True Nature Review & Giveaway

My True Nature Organic Bath ProductsI always thought that I loved receiving packages, but nothing parallels the excitement of CW when a package arrives at the door! “Is it for me?” he asks excitedly. Our bubble bath and hair/body wash was nicely packaged, and CW was immediately drawn to the cartoon characters of Bobo the dragon and Milo the skunk on the front of the bottles. I was immediately drawn to the “100% natural ingredients free from the harmful chemicals that have been identified with health problems.” Not only are the ingredients natural, but the bottles are also from 100% recycled materials that are free from PCBs and phthalates and they are manufactured in St. Louis, Missouri!

My True NatureCW has never had a bubble bath before due to his extremely sensitive skin. We try to buy gentle, fragrance-free products that do not bother his skin, and so I was immediately impressed with the lack of harsh chemicals found in My True Nature products. Needless to say, he was completely taken by the bubbles! Although they do not last as long as he would have liked, they also do not leave that “film” that is often present after a bubble bath. The hair and body wash was gentle and yet, still foamed enough to give Andrew (my husband) the satisfaction that it was actually cleaning. We have enjoyed the products thoroughly, and I think CW is secretly figuring out ways to get dirty enough to need a bath daily instead of his normal every-other-day baths just so he can play in the bubbles!

First Bubble BathTo read more about Tubby Town and to see more amazing products, including some great gift sets, go to My True Nature. You can order travel-sized bath products to try it out yourselves, but I can assure you that you will not regret your decision (the most difficult part will be getting your child out of the tub)! As soon as our samples run out, we will be ordering more. And, I know that I will have complete confidence in using the products on my newborn when he joins his big brother in the bathtub!

Baby Steps to Green-ness – Marcal Small Steps Giveaway

Marcal Small Steps

So maybe you’re not ready to forsake paper towels completely and drip dry on the potty…but there are lots of little steps to going green that we can all take every single day.  Little steps that, though small, are still forward progress toward a greener and healthier planet.

The folks at Marcal get it.  They recognize the importance of making little changes and have created a line of paper products made of 100% premium recycled paper.  Small Steps by Marcal products are whitened without chlorine bleaching, and they’re hypoallergenic and dye and fragrance-free.  Using recycled paper products saves trees. The Marcal Tree Calculator is a fun little widget that calculates how many trees you and your family, or classroom, or office can save over the next twenty years if you switch to recycled paper products.  My wee family of three can save two trees every year.  I have this kind of goofy quote from JRR Tolkien on my Facebook page: “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” I think two trees are important. My Dad always says “trees are our friends.” My Dad is a little goofy too.  But he’s also pretty darned smart.

So I tried several of the Small Steps products.  I like that the paper towels come in “U-Size It Sheets” so you can tear off smaller amounts for the trail of orange juice your toddler lets fall from her sippy cup and larger sheets for the third cat vomit of the day.  The products are fairly strong and effective…and I do love that they’re hypoallergenic and fragrance free.  So here’s the thing: they aren’t crazy soft.  None of these recycled paper products are crazy soft.  They just aren’t.  The Marcal website links to a few articles that clarify why this is the case.  A New York Times article of February 25, 2009 states, “Although toilet tissue can be made at similar cost from recycled material, it is the fiber taken from standing trees that help give it that plush feel, and most large manufacturers rely on them.”  Paper manufacturers are harvesting farmed trees, yes, but they’re cutting down very old trees as well.  So I guess it’s really up to us to decide. What are we willing to sacrifice for super soft toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and paper napkins?

Marcal Small Steps is priced so that you don’t need to sacrifice economy.  That’s pretty cool.  And their website offers a coupon for all you money saving Mamas as well. I guess in honor of Earth Day I’d just say, try them.  See how you like them.  Maybe you can’t do the tissues but the paper napkins and paper towels will work for you.  Small steps are still steps.  And trees are our friends.

Thanks to the good people out there in Elmwood Park, NJ one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will celebrate Earth Month with a free Marcal Small Steps starter kit (a $25 value) complete with toilet paper, napkins, paper towels and facial tissues.  Want to enter?  Read on!

When Preschool Plague Strikes – Boogie Wipes

Boogie Wipes Saline Nose Wipes for Kids

OK so apparently I am the very last Mom in America to learn about Boogie Wipes.  Sue me. We are in the midst of the third bout of Preschool Plague in nine weeks (yeah, even I can calculate that’s one plauge every three weeks) and apparently the World Phlegm Reserve has taken up residence in my Sweet Bean’s schnoz.  And forgive me the 8th grade vernacular, but it totally sucks. It’s a gorgeous weekend. We are inside and feverish and increasingly grumpy and I now challenge any of  you to a “Name That Wonder Pets Episode” for thousands and thousands of dollars.  I can tell you what they’re gonna save in two seconds.   It’s getting desperate.

I was trolling the baby aisle at Duane Reade on Friday stocking up on Baby Tylenol, when I spotted Boogie Wipes.  I had reluctantly been wiping the Bean’s goopy nose with diaper wipes which I knew was horrid but desperate times…  Basically Boogie Wipes are hypoallergenic wipes made with saline to gently remove those cemented-on dried boogies that you know and hate. I chose the “Fresh Scent” because grape-scented Boogie Wipes kinda seemed weird to me (then again I am not a six year old boy, and I bet they love them). It’s lovely and light, and I’ve been using them nonstop for three days, and the Bean has had no irritation from them.  I see on the Boogie Wipes site that they also come in a menthol scent for extra stuffy noses.  All this to say, Boogie Wipes are my new best friend and something that your snotty baby’s definitely gotta have. Join the Boogie Bunch to get a coupon worth $1 off your next purchase of Boogie Wipes.  You’ll be glad you did.

No one gave me anything to say this. I tried these on my own. Also good for spit-up, vomit, poo and drool.
