Bathtime Essentials for Babies & Toddlers

Tubby Time

I love tubby time. Mostly because a well-executed tubby time can lead to a smooth and cuddly bed time. And this Mama wants little more than a smooth and cuddly bedtime. Well, maybe the consumption of a vegetable once a month or so.

I’ve been on the quest for the best in bath gear.  Here’s a list of my most fantastic finds–some located years ago when I was first registering for baby gifts–some spotted today among the many booths at Toy Fair! Happy bathing!

  • The Tub My choice? The Primo EuroBath. Just watch this Babies Gotta Have It video blast from the past to see the tub in action. This tub is so roomy and so well made that my two and a half year old can still use it!
  • Wonderful Washcloths My favorites? aden + anais Muslin Washcloths. Big. Absorbent. Stylish.  And they get softer with every wash.
  • Baby Bath Wash and Shampoo I’ve tried a lot of different baby washes and shampoos. For me it’s gotta be green, it’s gotta be natural, it’s gotta smell good, and I do like bubbles!  Also, I really do like a baby shampoo and body wash in one. My fave: California Baby Shampoo & Body Wash
  • A Rubber Ducky I discovered the wonderful Dano Classic Rubber Duck at Toy Fair today and tried it out in the baby’s bath tonight! It is awesome. Four cute colors. BPA Free. Phthalate Free. Made in the USA of medical grade materials. Dishwasher safe. And the bottom totally opens so your baby can scoop water with it and it is easily dried and cleaned so no nasty mold builds up. Doesn’t squeak but love it love it love it!
  • Tub Toys There are lots out there but I’m partial to the Yookidoo Flow N’ Fill Spout. Not remotely green so far as I can tell.  But really cute and fun. Got a baby who hates the bath?  I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this toy, I think, could change her mind.
  • Tub Toy Caddy I discovered the Skip Hop Tubby Bath Toy Organizerat Toy Fair today. Love it.
  • Tub Crayons Crayola Bathtub Crayons. See picture above.
  • Hooded Towel I adore the Babylicious Hooded Bath Towel in the Little House pattern that I got on Babysteals.com. This pattern seems impossible to find now which is no help at all. But there are some really sweet patterns out there and these towels are so thick and luxurious. You will love them. Find one somewhere.

Fill Their Stockings With More than Candy – Oral-B Holiday Giveaway

Birthday Bean

I am Wendy.  And my toddler is a sugar freak.  She comes by it honestly. My mother considers chocolate to be one of the major food groups.  When I was little I used to sneak spoonfuls of confectioners sugar from the box on the lazy susan by the sink.  My little Bean comes from a long line of gals who can handle their sucrose.

I’m not sure that any amount of “organic blah de blah” or “all-natural bibble snobble” can fight this penchant for sweets.  I didn’t give the Bean any refined sugar for a very very long time.  And I still really avoid it.  But that kid can put down a Magnolia cupcake with the best of them.  There’s a part of me that’s a little proud.

And now it’s the holidays.  My mother is “cutting back” on the cookies this year.  Only baking the favorites.  One favorite.  For each of the grown-ups.  That makes eight different kinds of cookies.  Cutting back?  Yeah, the Bean is going to be bouncing off the walls at Granny’s house.

All this to say, oral hygeine is going to be a big part of our December.  If you’re anything like us, you have great intentions of good, thorough toothbrushing and minimal sugar intake…but moderate success.  Fortunately for us, Oral-B is there to offer suggestions, tips and great products to get us through this sweet sweet time.

Check out Oral-B’s website for some really practical Holiday Oral Care Tips for Kids.  This useful page doesn’t deny the fact that at this time of year, your kids are gonna munch on some sweeties.  Instead, it offers guidelines and suggestions for moderating the damage that stuff can do to your wee ones’ smiles.  I love this one: “Dairy acts as a buffer to the acids produced by oral bacteria, decreasing the possibility of tooth decay. So consider serving your children milk or cheese with holiday candies and treats.”  A cookie just isn’t the same without a glass of milk.  For all kinds of reasons, it turns out!

Oral-B Smilestages Scrapblog and Kids Oral Health TipsOral-B offers wonderful guidance for infant and toddler oral care (as well as a neat, new Scrapblog site called Smile-Stages, where you can upload and share photos of your baby beauty’s ever changing smile).  They divide your child’s oral development into “stages” and offer tips for good dental health and appropriate products for each stage.  Honestly, I was using Oral-B toothbrushes and toothpastes for the Bean before I was offered the chance to review and give them away.  The toothbrushes have cute Sesame Street and Winnie the Pooh characters that I really respond to on them (as does she). The infant toothpaste was easy to find at my local drug store, and clearly packaged so that I knew I was getting the right product for her at each age.

So you have all the best intentions in the world,  a little stool in front of the sink, and your toddler looks like she’d rather have a root canal than stand there and brush her teeth?  Try some of these suggestions from Oral-B:

  • Brush your teeth with your child!  You’ll be setting a good example for your child, and kids like to copy grown ups like Mama and Daddy.
  • Sing your child’s favorite song or play a song from their favorite CD for the two minutes while you’re brushing your teeth.  You can stop brushing when the song ends!
  • Recite a favorite nursery rhyme while your child is brushing.  They are finished when the rhyme is finished!
  • And of course, a favorite character on the toothbrush and toothpaste definitely helps make brushing fun!

Why not consider sticking a toothbrush in your kids’ stockings along with the snowman peeps and candy canes!  When you do finally get around to making that first pediatric dental appointment (that should happen by age 1…gulp) you’ll be glad you did.

And thanks to the generous folks at Oral-B, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a bundle that includes all of the Oral-B Stages toothbrushes and pastes!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Bibs, Burpees and Baby Boys – Wow Baby Bib Giveaway

wowbabybib

I worry sometimes that this blog is unfairly biased towards baby girls…because I have one, and I have discovered so many delicious baby girl products.  But Father’s Day is this Sunday and it’s time to remember that all Daddies were once messy little boys with frogs in their pockets and rocks in their shoes and pudding all over their faces.

We love baby boys!

And so do the folks at Wow Baby!!!  Oh yeah they’ve got sweet sweet girl patterns, but their baby boy bibs and burp cloths are beyond beyond.

We love Wow Baby. Why? Many of the bibs are made from natural, organic bamboo; they are all certified to meet all safety standards; and the fabrics are fantastic.  I also totally love the side closures, the adjustable neck fasteners so the bib can grow with your baby, and the most unique feature – the bib liner that snaps on to the back and keeps the blueberry juice from soaking through and staining the Mickey Mouse tee that Aunt Gretchen brought back from Disney World.

And just for all your sweet baby boys, the wonderful gals at Wow Baby have sent me a  boxed set of two beautifully made Signature Stripes Bibs (just look at that little embroidered dolphin on the side) to give away to one lucky reader.  Got a baby boy on the way?  Or one or two at home? This set is perfect for twin boys!  Enter to win now!

AND AS A SIDE NOTE…I am still looking for a baby boy named “John David” to give the most adorable personalized bib from Girle Bird Boutique to!  I am starting to think there are none out there!  If you know a baby John David, please email me immediately (babiesgottahaveit@gmail.com) and I’ll send this bib right out to you!

To Enter the Wow Baby Boy Bib Giveaway:

  • Take a swing by Wow Baby. Check out the her  Bibs and Burps Collection and leave me a comment with your favorite pattern besides the Signature Blue.  That’s it! Entering is that easy!

***Want extra chances to win? Do anything listed below and leave me additional comments for each one letting me know what you did!  Maximum of four entries per person.

The Video that Didn’t Win Me $10,000 on YouTube

[youtube XRg8WwA7y1U]

This is the video that didn’t win me $10,000 on YouTube. I kinda thought it was funny. But maybe I said poop and talked about my underwear too much for Johnson & Johnson’s taste.

The Post Where I Confess to Having The Mange

Ok here’s how it went down.

I confessed to the folks at Skin Free that I have hand mange. The doctors call it dishydrotic eczema. Yeah, whatever. To me it’s mange.

It all started because I’m a germaphobe. Big surprise. I was doing a play in Dallas about three years ago and the guy playing my husband, who, for the record, I had to smooch a heck of a lot, got sick. Let me tell you, when you are in a strange city living in a tiny apartment all by yourself, you so don’t want to get a cold from your fake husband.  I washed my hands like a crazy person. I bought stock in Purell. And I got itchy bumps at the base of my fingers on my right hand. Cut to three  years later…the itchy bumps have spread to the palms and in between the fingers on both hands.  And they regularly dry out, and crack in such unbelievably painful ways that the Purell application makes you want to scream in agony.

I’m fairly certain that my doctors would say it’s not Purell’s fault. No one in the medical community knows what brings on dishydrotic eczema. And they sure as heck don’t seem to have a cure for it. They have some super duper creams that take the pigment out of your skin (I am not joking) and definitely clear up the mange for a few days. I’m afraid to use my cream daily because of that whole skin pigment thing. And I really don’t want to put it on when I’m planning to touch the baby any time thereafter. So I only put it on before bed, and then I go to sleep wearing gloves like Michael Jackson because if it does that to my skin pigment, what’s it going to do to my duvet?

When they heard of my plight, the people from Skin Free, a company that makes skin products with no chemicals or preservatives, all natural ingredients, no petroleum products, no colorants and no steroids sent me their Extra Moisturizing Soap & Shampoo Bar and also the After Shower Moisture Spritz.  I tried them for upwards of a month. And my mange is 90% gone at this point. I am not quick to jump to Skin Free as a miracle mange cure.  I do think, however, that using it, oh say when the entire country is panicking about swine flu and you happen to be a raging germaphobe living in flu central with a toddler… will help keep the mange under control. I have used it almost exclusively in the bathroom, and I’ve been really conscious to use an all natural kitchen soap, and facial soap as well during this month. I think it’s helping.

The true test is that I went home to PA for Easter where there is no Skin Free soap. My mange came raging back like a mangy moose. A few weeks later, without having applied the nasty ointment, the mange is once again under control. Yeah I still have a few itchy bumps here and there. And the spring humidity has certainly helped.

But I think Skin Free rocks. If you’ve got dry, sensitive, itchy-bumpy skin…or if you’re just creeped out by chemicals, chuck the gloves, and think about giving Skin Free products a try.

Mange-free hands. Yeah. That’s something this baby’s gotta have.

Baby Lust – The Learning Tower Giveaway!

darkcherrygirl1

You know what I hate? Five p.m. And five after five.  And five fifteen.  And five thirty… Pretty much everything between five and dinner I kinda hate with the white hot passion of a thousand suns.  Why, you ask?  Or maybe you don’t ask. Maybe you just nod in sad agreement, knowing full well that the hour before dinner…when nap time is but a distant memory and bedtime still just out of reach…that hour in which the kids are grumpy and so are you but dinner must be made and tables must be set and it’s so tempting to call on your favorite babysitter (you know him right? he’s small and red and furry and goes by the name of Elmo), is horrid.

What if, and stay with me here, this didn’t have to be. What if making dinner was actually fun. Something that you and your kids could do together.  I hear you laughing raucously as you pour the hamburger helper in the pot and toss a cheddar bunny to your toddler like a sea world trainer tossing a dolphin a sardine.  But hear me out on this.

You prepare food on the counter, right?  Unless, like me, you live in New York and have four square inches of counter space and prepare food atop your toaster oven. But many of you, I daresay, have (and pardon my drooling) kitchen islands.  And acres of counter space. If only that little person wasn’t so darned short, she could pour in the hamburger helper and go at it with a wooden spoon.

Voila. Kitchen Island, meet The Learning TowerLearning Tower, get to know your two new best friends, the Kitchen Island and the Granite Counter Tops.  The Learning Tower is a totally sturdy, totally awesome, tree-house looking booster that your child can easily mount and join you and her older siblings at counter height!  Its unique design offers a degree of safety you just can’t get with a regular step stool.  Get too excited decorating Christmas cookies, and your wee one could tumble off a stool.  But he’ll be safe and snug in The Learning Tower, singing Jingle Bells and tossing sprinkles until the cows come home.

I love the way this device encourages small children to be curious. What’s on the counter?  What is Mommy doing?  Why can’t I see?  Why can’t I help?  Now, she can.  I also love that it adjusts with your child as he grows, that it comes in nine non-toxic colors so I can match my granite countertops (if only…), meets safety standards, is made of wood (yay for real live wood!), and, get this, can be transformed into a playhouse or puppet theater!  And since it holds 500 pounds and looks like a treehouse, I can climb in too.

This innovative product has won a zillion awards, been featured on Rachel Ray (with a little help maybe you can make that thirty minute meal in twenty!), and here’s the best part…thanks to the amazing folks at little Partners Inc. one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader is getting one for free!  How cool is that?

To Enter The Learning Tower Giveaway:

  • Just swing by the little Partners Inc website, check out The Learning Tower, and leave a comment telling me which color you’d choose if you won.  Entering is that easy!

***Want an extra chance to win? Blog or twitter about this giveaway, leave me an additional comment letting me know you did (please include the url), and I’ll put your name in the hat twice! Not a blogger? Subscribe to my blog using the button to the right, leave me an additional comment, and you’re entered twice. Or, email a friend about the giveaway, cc me in the message at babiesgottahaveit@gmail.com (I promise I will not spam you or your friends – cross my heart) and you’ll have two entries. Make sure you include your email address with your entry.***

Giveaway open to those with U.S. addresses. Giveaway begins on Tuesday February 17th and ends on Tuesday February 24th  at 11:59 Eastern Standard Time. On Wednesday February 25th, my baby girl will draw the winning name and I’ll email you and announce it immediately. It’s not a terribly scientific drawing, but I assure you it could not be more random. Thanks for entering!
