Get to Know Your Neighbors with Babybuds! Baby Toy Giveaway!

It’s Earth Month!

Even though my baby is far from infancy, I still get so excited when I hear about a new line of eco-friendly baby products.  And a new line of eco-friendly baby products that’s available at a Target near you… is super exciting.  Though you guys know I’m a huge fan of local independent toy stores (SHOP LOCAL!), knowing that the big box boys are offering safe, green toys to customers shows how much traction the eco-friendly toy movement is gaining in the marketplace.  And how accessible and affordable these toys are becoming.

So. Friends? Meet Babybuds.  I just received these two in the mail: The Hoot the Owl Blanket Buddy and Frump the Elephant Rattle (he doesn’t look so frumpy to me!).  First of all, green or no, any Babies Gotta Have It pick has to be super cute.  Check!  I love the gender-neutral earth tones and animals.  We all know how hot owls are these days in nursery decorating.  The faces are sweet and the fabrics are soft.  So let’s discuss those fabrics!  According to the Babybuds website:

BabyBuds™ are made with love, using naturally sustainable, eco-friendly fabrics, including certified organic cottons and natural silks. And each BabyBuds™ toy is filled with virgin biodegradable corn fiber. We use only low impact dyes, and minimal packaging.

Every BabyBuds™ product is made with the safety of your little human BabyBud as our first concern. Every BabyBuds™ product is free from harmful chemicals, and complies with the strictest global safety standards.

And that, my friends, makes me stand up and cheer!

So where will our two little critters go to live?  We are lucky enough to have a new baby next door.  We don’t know his parents very well (after all this is New York, folks), but the new baby has been a great ice-breaker for us with them.  Cate was so excited to meet him a few weeks ago, and we decided then that it would be a really nice thing to take him a gift.  I feel comfortable and confident giving these toys to our neighbors, knowing that they are safe. For baby and for the planet.

Baby toys that fussy New Yorkers can feel really good giving to the people living next door to them that that hardly know?  That’s something savvy Mamas definitely gotta have!

If you want to go from “Say-hello-in-the-elevator-acquaintances” to actual friends with your new-parent neighbors check out the store finder on the Babybuds website to find the closest store to you!

And thanks to the wonderful folks at Babybuds, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a pair of adorable Babybuds toys of their very own!  Just use the easy Rafflecopter entry below to qualify!

Thanks to Babybuds for sending us the two items pictured above to review and then give to our neighbors.  As always, all opinions are strictly my own and you better believe were in no way influenced by anyone.

Nine Naturals: Pampering for Pregnancy and Beyond

I don’t know about you, but I could use some pampering.  I have two beautiful boys who are a ton of fun, but I do not get many chances for pampering myself.  Thankfully, Nine Naturals sent me the Nine Naturals Travel Gift Set to try.  And, oh man, I am in love!

Because I have curly hair, I am picky about my shampoo and conditioner, and have struggled to find an all-natural set that does not leave my hair limp and greasy.  I found one now, though!  Nine Naturals is 100% Natural. It is Sulfate-free, Paraben-free, Phthalate-free, BPA-free, Triclosan-free, DEA-free, Petrochemical-free. All of the products are free of artificial chemicals, dyes, and synthetic fragrance.  If you read the ingredients list, everything is derived from natural sources (water, coconuts, sunflowers, lemons, etc.).  So, not only is Nine Naturals a great product for use when you are pregnant, but it is also a great way to pamper yourself for years to come!

The Travel Gift Set includes: Citrus and Mint Nourishing Shampoo, Citrus and Mint Nourishing Conditioner, Citrus and Geranium Soothing Body Wash, Mandarin and Ginger Restorative Conditioner, and Vanilla and Geranium Restorative Belly Butter in a reusable hemp travel bag.  I lathered up for over a week of blissful bathing, and had amazing results.  My hair was full of body and curl, my skin was soft and hydrated, and my hands were smooth and restored.  Now, you might say, “So what?” But, my hands are so dry in the winter (and thanks to endless dishes) are the equivalent of the Mojave Dessert.  In fact, they often peel and crack.  But, the Belly Butter, while nice on my belly, was most helpful for rehydrating my hands.

Even my husband noticed, which is saying something.  He loved the scents, and mentioned that my “hair smelled lovely” on more than one occasion (which he has never said before).  I think he liked the natural smell of the citrus and vanilla in particular.

With all that in mind, I am sure some of you are still wondering why you should try it.  Why should you pay for natural shampoo, when you can buy a jumbo bottle of something else at Target or Costco?  If you are as concerned about the health of your unborn child as I was, then maybe you will rethink that.  If you are willing to give up certain foods and drinks and other toxins, why not try Nine Naturals for the nine months of your pregnancy?  And, I think you will find that you love it so much, and love that you are being eco-friendly, that you will continue using it indefinitely.  I now use it on my children and myself, and will not buy harsh shampoos and conditioners again.  Make the pledge to shower naturally for the next nine months, and you will love the way your skin and hair feel!  Go ahead and pamper yourself (and your friends…what a great baby shower gift this would be)!

muCan I Get a WotWot!? – Stuffed Toy Giveaway

Well, I might just live under a rock.  I had never heard of the WotWots; these dear, lovable, curious, Fraggle Rock-meets-the-Muppets-type-of-aliens flew onto our front doorstep and into our lives.  As usual, CW was super excited to see the UPS truck drop a package off at our door.  He immediately wanted to know, “Is it for me?”  He was a little annoyed that it was for MD and not him, but he took a liking to Spotty Wot as well.

I digress.  If you live under a rock like me, you can watch the introduction to the WotWots! here.  I guarantee that your kids will laugh hysterically.  Mine did.  And “WotWot” joins the handful of words in MD’s vocabulary (“apple,” “uh-oh,” “Daddy,” and “up” are his other favorites).  The WotWots are twins, Spotty and Dotty, who fly around making mischief!  I loved the use of real zoo animals with the WotWots.

But, best of all, they are now available in plush toys for your favorite girls and boys.  The soft eyes and fuzzy fur are safe for babies ages six months and up, and great for teaching your little ones about the parts of a face (MD loves the “eyes”).  Their furry antennae are adorable and springy!  More often than not, Spotty Wot can be found in MD’s crib nestled under his arm while he sleeps.  I have even watched him (on the monitor) rubbing the antennae with his hand while he tries to fall asleep.  Spotty Wot is blue and Dotty Wot is pink (for those of you who have children who like one color over the other).

Put these fun creatures on your children’s Christmas list this year!

The WotWots! can be seen on TV on the Hub. You can buy the plush toys on our affiliate Amazon…and one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a soft and fuzzy WotWot for their very own!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Dapple Cleans Up

Have you read all of the studies about how much bacteria is in the wet sand at the beach?  I have.   So when we headed to the beach last week, I was excited to try out Dapple’s line of baby-safe and baby-specific green household cleaning products.  I received a travel pack of Dapple toy cleaner wipes and a travel-sized dish liquid container the week before…perfect timing!

Made in the USA, Dapple’s products are all natural, free of SLES, parabens, chlorine, phthalates, and dyes.  The dish liquid rinses clean easily and effectively cleans your baby’s dishes!  The fragrance-free bottle and dish liquid works really well to clean out those bottles (I always found breast milk especially difficult, but this worked wonders)!  Plus, it is gentle on your hands, and being a parent means you are probably doing a lot of dishes (if you’re not, I would love to know your secret)!

Dapple also offers Pacifier Wipes, fragrance-free Baby Laundry Detergent, and more!  Don’t trust your child’s toys and pacifiers to just any cleaner; make sure it is the pediatrician-recommended, all natural Dapple!

Go Plastic Free This Summer and Make Some Popsicles

I’m on a bit of a green kick these last few weeks.  I posted about plant-based compostable paper and plastic cups, recycling kids clothes with thredUP, and now as the temperature soars here in the Northeast I’m back on the no plastic kick.

Plastic is creepy enough.  But when it gets very very hot or very very cold I’m even more freaked out.  How is it that for years we drank tepid plastic-flavored water from plastic containers that sat in hot backpacks for hours and didn’t think….hmmm…maybe that’s not right?  I’ve been trying to learn about food and milk container safety since I started Babies Gotta Have It and I’m pretty convinced by the evidence.

But look it’s summer!  It’s hot!  We all want to have fun and what’s more fun that making homemade popsicles?!  Not much, I say!  My good friends at our partner NoPlastic.ca sent us their amazingly awesome, space-age Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold and we tried it last weekend.  And the popsicles came out absolutely perfectly!

The mold is all stainless steel (obviously plastic and BPA free) and comes with a pack of wooden popsicle sticks which you’ll need to replenish when you use them all (you can even order reusable bamboo ones from NoPlastic).  Insert the awesome shaped popsicle mold into the rack, pour in your filling of choice, lay the lid on top.  Each lid has a rubber, colored disc on top with a slot for the stick.  Stick in the stick.  Freeze.  You can remove one popsicle at a time without having to melt any of the others, which is awesome.  Run your popsicle under hot water for half a second and the metal mold easily slides off revealing a PERFECT popsicle.  The lid becomes a convenient juice-catcher.  Oh and the different colored discs on each mold allows each kid to have his very own popsicle that he made.  Genius.

And homemade popsicle recipes have come a long way.  Check out the offerings on Epicurious. And of course Martha has some amazing looking options.

Homemade, healthy, frozen treats. That’s something Mamas and Babies definitely gotta have.

This Fourth of July Have a Red, White, Blue & Green Picnic

This post written last Friday afternoon…not published then because, well, I was scrambling!

There’s just no getting around it.  Summer means food.  And food means Mama’s planning meals.  Meals for three.  For five.  For ten.  And yet, when you’re dealing with families and kids there’s just no planning, is there?

We’re hosting a last minute get together with Doc Hubby’s parents this weekend, and I’ve been spending the morning repurposing my menus from our last planned weekend with friends…which we had to cancel because Bean was sick and had been exposed to Coxsackie (basically foot and mouth disease–ugh).  She didn’t end up having it, but, as goes life, our weekend plans were scrapped at the last minute.  And now again, at the last minute, we have plans for visiting.  And as every Mama out there knows, visiting means eating.

I’ve been browsing my Pinterest boards for recipes–finally I’m gonna do something about all that yummy stuff I’ve been pinning.  And, as we Mamas do, I’ve got a plan for meals basically laid out.  It’s a mixture of being prepared and flying by the seat of your pants, this Motherhood.  Isn’t it?  We stock and think and fret and prepare.  And then we improvise.

One thing I’m trying to stock are greener picnic products.  So I’m just not just mindlessly picking up less environmentally friendly options during the last minute scramble phase of the picnic planning.  Recently I was introduced to Repurpose Compostables — a line of affordable, sustainable, plant-based cutlery and and cups.  And I am so glad I have them in my cabinets, ready for use.

Repurpose’s mission is to eliminate single-use plastics from the environment and help consumers easily incorporate eco-friendly, sustainable products into their lives.  So what does it mean that the products are compostable?  What if you don’t have a compost pile in your back yard?  Well, actually that’s not where these items belong. The idea is actually that the plant-based Repurpose Compostable products will break down completely within 90 days in an industrial composting setting (don’t get all gloaty you Bay Area people with your ubiquitous composting bins).  Don’t have one of those in your backyard either? Well, even if these products end up in a landfill they will break down more quickly and generate less CO2 than other recyclable plastics that are sent to a landfill. And because only 5% – 8% of plastics are recycled properly to begin with, these compostable products are a much better choice.

But maybe the video below says it best of all.  Repurpose Compostable hot and cold cups, and new utensils are plant based.  Read the Repurpose FAQ page for more info, but basically they perform as well as traditional plastics but ultimately they are made of corn, instead of petroleum.  Corn.  Renewable.  Compostable.  Corn. I’d rather put than in my mouth than oil. Just sayin’.  Repurpose hot cups are in stores now and the cold cups and utensils will be coming out in September 2012. The hot cups are available now at Bed Bath & Beyond, Gourmet Guild, Gelson’s the Super Market, and online at our affiliate Amazon.com.

Looking for more ways to green up your holiday picnic?  Check out the Glad Waste Less One Bag site.  The One Bag campaign challenges you to send only one bag of trash to the landfill after your event with all the rest going to recycling and compost.  Whether you’re hosting a tailgate, a wedding or a 4th of July shebang, check out their downloadable tips to reduce the amount of trash you put out there this summer season.

This 4th of July, why not be prepared to go red, white, blue and GREEN with Repurpose Compostables.  They won’t cook your food for you.  But they’ll help you and your family eat it and feel good about it.  That’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.

Thank you to Repurpose compostables for sending me product to review.  As always, all views expressed in this post are totally my own and were in no way influenced by anyone.

“Where in the World is Away?” – a Thought-Provoking Book About Recycling

It’s a rare treat for this English major to review a children’s book that teaches such a lasting lesson.  With fresh rhymes, colorful illustrations, and important lessons, you cannot go wrong with “Where in the World is Away?” by author, musician, filmmaker, and humanitarian Michael Franti.  The book is a thought-provoking journey that makes children responsible for the planet on which we live.

CW, with his perpetual fascination of vehicles, is a bit obsessed with garbage and recycling trucks as you can imagine.  “Where in the World is Away?” follows a recycled bottle to the recycling plant where it is turned into “goo” and then into something else again.  It reminds children (and parents) to reduce, reuse, and recycle, because although you may throw that bottle “away,” it is really just “somewhere else.”  Lee and Lou and Mo the Crow show the reader how trash is affecting the plants and animals around us, and increasing our own footprints on the Earth.  Teaching the benefits of recycling, “Where in the World is Away?” is my new favorite book about the impact of garbage on the things around us.

The book even comes with a CD for a musical “read-along,” which CW immediately asked if we could “do that again!”  And although I didn’t think it was possible, the book gets better!  It is printed and manufactured in the United States; printed with environmentally friendly soy ink; and printed on elemental chlorine-free (ECF), sustainably harvested, recycled stock!  So, if the prospect of a recycling-focused children’s book with catchy rhythm and cute characters isn’t enough for you, hopefully you will be impressed by such an environmentally friendly process to create the book!  Get your copy here.  Your child and the Earth will thank you!

I’ll Have A Green Green Easter – Eco-Friendly Easter Basket Ideas

April is Earth Month. April is Spring. April is flowers blooming and birds singing…and so much plastic crap in Easter Baskets!  Plastic crap that lasts forever. How long do you suppose it takes a typical plastic Easter Egg to biodegrade…? Answer: I have no idea.  I suppose if I knew what number was on the bottom of a plastic Easter egg I could find out easily enough.  But I’m not sure they come printed with numbers.  Traditional plastic Easter eggs last long enough that I found at least one website that suggests using them for time capsules…so… What about plastic Easter grass? Or the stuff that is in traditional egg dye? Or Peeps for that matter? Just kidding.  I love Peeps way way way too much.

So. How to green up our Easters this year?  I have a few suggestions! Hooray for Earth friendly holidays!

Eco Eggs Compostable Plastic Eggs

Biodegradable Easter Eggs File under “It’s About Friggin’ Time!” This is such a no brainer to me, and I’m so glad someone has finally done it!  Eco Eggs are biodegradable, compostable, fillable, colorful, plastic Easter Eggs made out of corn! At $30 for 96 eggs this is definitely a choice I’m making this Easter.

Homemade Easter Grass

Homemade Easter Grass I’m gonna be honest with you here.  I totally thought of this yesterday when I was shredding bills.  But I guess Martha thought of it four years ago…and took the idea a step further by suggesting you use small scraps of wrapping paper. Touche Martha.  Either way, choose paper Easter grass instead of plastic.

Eco-Eggs Eco-Kids Natural and Organic Easter Egg Dye

All Natural Easter Egg Dyes Of course you can make your own dyes, which actually sounds like a lot of fun and produces beautiful results.  But if you don’t fancy boiling up a vat of red cabbage and vinegar (oh our apartment neighbors would love it when that odor comes wafting down the hall) try the eco-eggs egg coloring kit by eco-kids.  We reviewed this kit last year and I kept the eggs to use again this year.  They are gorgeous.  I’ll post a photo later this week.

Lavender Joy Basket by 'becca baskets

Heirloom Fabric or Wood Baskets Skip the plastic basket! Buy a fabric basket to reuse year after year, or even for a different purpose, and make your basket a real masterpiece.  For my money, etsy is the place to look for these– you can find personalized fabric baskets, adorable crochet baskets, and the gorgeous basket pictured above by ‘beccas baskets.

And then it’s time to fill them!  Load up on Fair Trade chocolates, organic sweeties, and lots of cute toys made with anything but plastic.  Petite Planet has a post with some great suggestions of eco-friendly Easter basket gifts for green kids!  Check them out!

Less plastic in the season of renewal.  That’s something Mamas and Babies definitely gotta have.

Amp Up Your Apps With WebMD and The Snow Ball

Here’s another great review from up and coming tech experts Kristin and CW!

Is There a Doctor Available?

I have come to the conclusion that I may be an app junkie!  I love new apps on my phone, and there are a number of apps that I can’t live without.  One of those apps is the new WebMD Baby app!  And if you’re at all like me, you will love this app because it is so simple to use and it’s completely free!  There are weekly tips (this week’s tip for MD is about naps and bedtime struggles…SO timely for us) and daily Doctor tips!  Plus, you can access all of the great information from WebMD about health and wellness questions, as well as an illnesses and emergencies section.  There are other sections Just for Moms, Just for Dads, Parenting Tips, Baby Week by Week, Ask the Pediatrician, Milestones, Vaccines, and Baby Doctor Visits.

Next time you have a question about symptoms, instead of “googling” them, go straight to your WebMD app and see what the experts say.

CW Has fun With "The Snow Ball" App

Your Child Will Have a Ball with the Digital Book “The Snow Ball”

If you are bored with the books and games for your child on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android Motorola Xoom, or Samsung Galaxy Tab devices, you will be happy to hear that another great quality book and game are available now.  David Steinberg’sThe Snow Ball” digital book is accompanied by an adorable game called “Penguin Attack.”  Check out the trailer here.

“The Snow Ball” can be read aloud to your child, or he can choose to read it himself.  On every page, he can touch the polar bears or penguins and they dance, sled, or say cute phrases.  The book is witty with beautiful illustrations by Liz Conrad.  CW laughed at the silly penguins, and especially loved the music selections at the “Snow Day Ball!”  I loved the catchy phrases like, “Thump-thump-galumping.” And, “Balumping on their bellies.  Skit-skat-skadoodle up to Icicle Hall.” The word play is original and fun!

CW Enjoys The Snow Ball App

“Penguin Attack” is great for problem solving and learning early Geometry.  Your child has to try to get the polar bears to the Snow Day Ball without falling in the water holes.  Sounds easy, right?  Well, if it weren’t for all of the penguins that lie between the bears and the ball, it would be easy. Your child has to figure out how to bounce the bears off of the penguins at an angle that will get them into the ball safely.  It is a mixture of pool and bowling, and CW laughs hysterically every time he plays it.

Before this winter becomes a memory,  check out “The Snow Ball” and pick up the free “Penguin Attack” game too!

Kristin with CW and MDKristin is a former high school English teacher and show choir geek enjoying time as a stay-at-home mom to CW and new baby brother MD.

Kristin received “The Snow Ball” app free for the purpose of review, but as always, her opinion is entirely her own and has not been influenced by anyone!

Baby Gourmet, From One Mama to Another – Giveaway

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

Is your baby ready to eat solids?  Or, maybe you have a picky toddler who eats very few vegetables and fruits?  Have you noticed the overwhelming variety of baby foods available?  Have you wanted to make your own baby food, but just don’t have the time (or equipment)?  While I love my Baby Brezza, and it is so simple to use, I just don’t always have the time (or ingredients) to create fresh meals for MD.  But, I have been a bit disappointed with the variety of Organic baby food products available at my grocery store from the “regular” companies (like Gerber and Earth’s Best).  Recently, though, I was sent some products by Baby Gourmet to try (thank you Baby Gourmet for the sample pack) and my whole life has changed!

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

When Baby Gourmet’s founder Jennifer Broe’s daughter was six months old, she attempted solid foods for the first time.  To her disappointment, she was not impressed by the typical baby food selections.  Like me, she struggled with giving her child those disgusting greyish green, stinky green beans.  She wanted to give her child something that was healthy and flavorful.  So, she started creating her own baby foods.  Then her friends’ babies tried the foods, and she went on to sell them on the weekends at farmer’s markets.  Now, she runs Baby Gourmet.  Every batch is taste-tested prior to packaging, and if it does not meet Jennifer’s high standards, then it is thrown away!

Baby Gourmet Baby Food

I have to say, I am a purist when it comes to eating…I like my foods separate.  My older son eats his foods on a sectioned plate because he doesn’t like separate foods touching.  So, it’s difficult for me to be creative with flavors.  But, now I don’t have to do it alone!  Baby Gourmet offers wonderful mixtures of textures and flavors (I tried them, and they were absolutely amazing…maybe I’ll invest in them when I’m old and can no longer eat regular food).  For example, yesterday MD (and I) tried the Orchard Apple, Carrot and Prune.  Neither one of us wrinkled our noses! Today he had Baby’s Sweet Potato Pie – it was gone and he was looking for more!  Other wonderful flavors include: Juicy Pear and Garden Greens; Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp; Harvest Pear, Pumpkin, and Banana; and many more!

All of the products are made using USDA Organic fruits and vegetables. There are no fillers or thickeners.  They are all gluten-free, unsweetened, and nut-free.  The re-sealable pouches are BPA free and labeled clearly with Stage 1 (6 months+), Stage 2 (7 months+), and Stage 3 (8 months+).  Your child can feed himself directly from the pouch, or you can squirt the food into a bowl.

Baby Gourmet

I have tried a ton of different baby food products for CW and MD, and Baby Gourmet offers the most variety of flavors and textures, with 100% organic produce!  Baby Gourmet is available in most grocery stores and on Amazon.com.  Try it today!
