Baby’s Building Green

April may be over but I still have lots of innovative and beautiful green toys to share with you! Some of these we have been given, some are new products from green and gorgeous companies I know and love, and some I found in the aisles of Toy Fair.  How many birthday party invitations are stuck to your bulletin board right now? I thought so.  Check these green and gorgeous building and construction toy sets for boys and girls out.

Green Toys Building Blocks

Green Toys Blocks California-made. Eco and safe.  Awesome.  This 18 piece block set is good for babies ages six months and up.  One of the most environmentally friendly building sets around, the blocks are oversized and light weight and come in a unique variety of shapes for building all kinds of structures.  Made in the USA from 100% recycled plastics, green packaging, and totally non-toxic.  A great new toy from a company we’ve come to know and love.

Tree Blocks

Tree Blocks I love fairy houses.  Rainy day? Hunker down in your daughter’s bedroom, open up a bag of Tree Blocks and lose yourself in Fairyland.  Oh did I mention these blocks are made by elves? They are.  The elves hand cut the sets from reclaimed wood so no two sets are the same.  But all contain blocks in 2,4,6,8, and 10 cm sizes with disks, bridges and “y” or forked pieces for inventive creations.  For ages three and up.

Sprig ToysAnd coming soon from one of my absolute favorite companies, Sprig Toys — Eco Blocks!  These classic, eco-friendly and light-weight building blocks made from recycled sprig wood are top-rack dishwasher safe and come in a variety of shapes that will inspire your little architect (for 12 months and up) to reach greater and greater heights.  Or to build some neat stuff, anyway.

Baby Steps to Green-ness - Marcal Small Steps Giveaway

Marcal Small Steps

So maybe you’re not ready to forsake paper towels completely and drip dry on the potty…but there are lots of little steps to going green that we can all take every single day.  Little steps that, though small, are still forward progress toward a greener and healthier planet.

The folks at Marcal get it.  They recognize the importance of making little changes and have created a line of paper products made of 100% premium recycled paper.  Small Steps by Marcal products are whitened without chlorine bleaching, and they’re hypoallergenic and dye and fragrance-free.  Using recycled paper products saves trees. The Marcal Tree Calculator is a fun little widget that calculates how many trees you and your family, or classroom, or office can save over the next twenty years if you switch to recycled paper products.  My wee family of three can save two trees every year.  I have this kind of goofy quote from JRR Tolkien on my Facebook page: “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” I think two trees are important. My Dad always says “trees are our friends.” My Dad is a little goofy too.  But he’s also pretty darned smart.

So I tried several of the Small Steps products.  I like that the paper towels come in “U-Size It Sheets” so you can tear off smaller amounts for the trail of orange juice your toddler lets fall from her sippy cup and larger sheets for the third cat vomit of the day.  The products are fairly strong and effective…and I do love that they’re hypoallergenic and fragrance free.  So here’s the thing: they aren’t crazy soft.  None of these recycled paper products are crazy soft.  They just aren’t.  The Marcal website links to a few articles that clarify why this is the case.  A New York Times article of February 25, 2009 states, “Although toilet tissue can be made at similar cost from recycled material, it is the fiber taken from standing trees that help give it that plush feel, and most large manufacturers rely on them.”  Paper manufacturers are harvesting farmed trees, yes, but they’re cutting down very old trees as well.  So I guess it’s really up to us to decide. What are we willing to sacrifice for super soft toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and paper napkins?

Marcal Small Steps is priced so that you don’t need to sacrifice economy.  That’s pretty cool.  And their website offers a coupon for all you money saving Mamas as well. I guess in honor of Earth Day I’d just say, try them.  See how you like them.  Maybe you can’t do the tissues but the paper napkins and paper towels will work for you.  Small steps are still steps.  And trees are our friends.

Thanks to the good people out there in Elmwood Park, NJ one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will celebrate Earth Month with a free Marcal Small Steps starter kit (a $25 value) complete with toilet paper, napkins, paper towels and facial tissues.  Want to enter?  Read on!

Go Greenzys - Eco Friendly Book Giveaway!

I attended the International Toy Fair this year for the second time. If you like toys (and let’s face it, who doesn’t like toys) it is a neato event. This year, however, I was blown away by the growing selection of green and eco-friendly toys.  In fact, an entire section of Toy Fair this year was devoted to them.  These wonderful companies are showing the entire toy industry just how dreamy it is to be green.  This month I am delighted to introduce you to several of the products and companies I met wandering the aisles of Toy Fair.

The Greenzys Eco Friendly Plush Toys

So to kick off Earth Day Month with a bang, allow me to introduce you to…The GREENZYS! Geared for preschoolers, the GREENZYS are an eco-friendly collection of books and stuffed animals designed to promote green living and help kids learn to make environmentally friendly choices. Not only that, but they are cute cute cute.  And green green green.  In all ways!  The animals themselves, made in socially-responsible factories from soy fibers and non-toxic dyes, are green from head to toe with cute earth logos on their tummies.  My Little Bean was sent Willow the elephant who collects rainwater for her plants and uses her trunk as a water hose.  Now let me say, that these animals are a really nice huggable size! Willow is a big squishy elephant and the Bean is a little bit in love with her.

Other members of the GREENZYS family include Peat the Penguin who is all about recycling and reducing waste, YewYew the Panda who grows bamboo to prevent soil erosion and create oxygen, and Violet the Giraffe, the ecological genius that teaches the GREENZYS how to reduce their carbon paw print in an effort to protect the environment…to name a few!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, for every GREENZYS purchase made between now and December 31st, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant one tree in our nation’s forest.  And even better, your kid gets a personalized certificate saying so.  I’m a fan.

Check out the GREENZYS really cute website for fun videos, green tips, and more.

GREENZYS are available at FAO Schwartz and FAO.com, but one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win the adorable GREENZYS Book! In this charming book the GREENZYS meet Orinda, the world’s oldest living tree, and when they discover she’s in trouble, they work together to save her.  The art is unique and adorable, and the book is made in an eco-friendly manner with soy based inks.  And the book is printed right here in the USA reducing it’s carbon footprint.  Yippee!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Just for Fun - A Robeez Mini Shoez Giveaway!

I love Robeez. I have from the beginning. Since this post is just for fun, I’d like to share a video from the past: almost two years ago here’s what the Little Bean and I first had to say about Robeez.

I’ve always been a fan of Robeez’s Soft Soles collection, and their Mini Shoez line is just as delicious.  Mini Shoez look like “real” shoes in an very sweet way and are designed for babies ages 3 to 18 months (sizes US 2 - 5).  All Mini Shoez feature soft premium leathers; flexible, cushioned insoles; easy-to put-on design; and non-slip, water-resistant soles. If your baby is crawling, cruising, or just beginning to walk, Robeez Mini Shoez are a great choice for you.  And I cannot over-emphasize how important that ease-of-putting-on factor is in a baby shoe.  It is an exquisite kind of torture to try to shove a precious chubby little infant foot into a shoe that just doesn’t want to budge.  The makers of the Mini Shoez know this, thank goodness.

Robeez Eco Friendly Shoes for Babies & Toddlers

And did I mention that Robeez has a new Eco Collection made from green products such as organic cotton, recycled rubber, recycled leather (I didn’t even know recycled leather existed!), and water-soluble inks? Yahoo!  Robeez of all kinds make wonderful and unique baby gifts. I should know.  I got two pairs.

Robeez MIni Shoez Flower H&L Boots

So here’s the real just for fun part.  Cuz the folks at Robeez are so darned cool, they sent me a drool-worthy pair of their Flower H&L Boots from the Mini Shoez for girls collection in a size 3 (6 - 9 months) pictured above…and I’m giving them away to you.  There is nothing cuter than little boots on babies.  Nothing.  Want to enter?  Read on!

Not Your Mama’s Glass Bottle - Bottles of Joy Holiday Giveaway!

My friend Laurie from prenatal yoga is a chemical engineer.  One afternoon during a playdate in the park we started talking about bottles and BPA and all that. Here’s what she said:

“I’m a chemical engineer.  Plastic creeps me out.  I’m using glass bottles.”

Even two years ago when I was breastfeeding my baby and pumping at night, glass bottles weren’t easy to come by.  In fact, they were hard enough to find that despite Laurie’s warning, I went with BPA free plastic bottles.  And I felt good with that choice.  But amazing sites like Sprout Baby are now making it easy to find all kinds of green and eco-friendly products for baby,  including the next generation of BPA free glass bottles.

Check out my video from April of 2008 and Sprout Baby’s informative post for clear and sobering information regarding BPA and its potential risks to your infant’s health.  Scary stuff.  But the really good news is that the product selection for BPA and polycarbonate free feeding is just getting bigger and bigger and more and more cool!

Lifefactory Wee Go Glass Baby Bottle 9 ounceSprout Baby sent me two of their way cool new glass bottles to check out and I gotta say, I love them.  The Wee Go Glass Baby Bottle pictured at left is just plain awesome.   This neat bottle comes with a silicone sleeve (available in six fun colors on Sprout Baby) which is free of plastics and 100%  non-toxic.  Of course, everyone is concerned about glass bottles falling to the ground and breaking.  This protective sleeve helps prevent that outcome and also keeps the bottle from crashing into your iPhone in your diaper bag.  And get this, you can boil and dishwash the bottle and the sleeve…together!  This super tactile sleeve makes it easier to hold the bottle and also just feels cool–a sensation that won’t be lost on your infant.  The nipple is also silicone and non-toxic, and the plastic ring, plug and cap contain no polycarbonates and are food grade, FDA approved and recyclable.  Oh and they’re comitted to minimal packaging too.  What you see is pretty much what you get. Woo Hoo!

Born Free 9 oz. Glass BottleSo the plastic bottles I did end up using were made by the company Born Free, and they worked really well for us.  Now, Born Free also has glass bottles available with their unique smooth flow valve that helps reduce colic and ear infections.  If your baby has these problems, I’d definitely check out this bottle.  The Born Free valve system worked really well for my baby and we didn’t have colic or ear infection problems at all.  According to their literature, this valve system is also good for breast fed babies who are being introduced to bottle feeding, because the steady flow of liquid it provides is very similar to breast feeding.  Born Free also offers silicone sleeves for added protection and grip-ability.

And..thanks to the generous folks at Sprout Baby, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win one of each of these bottles–Bottles of Joy!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Send Some Chicks to Your Favorite Chicks with Oxfam America Unwrapped

Oxfam America Unwrapped

So it’s Black Friday. I love Black Friday.  Maybe I’m the only one.  But my mother and grandmother and I have always enjoyed a big shopping day on the day after Thanksgiving.  When I was small we went to a wonderful downtown department store called Hess’s in Allentown, PA  (sadly no longer in existence) and dined at a restaurant inside the store!  I remember eating french fries and drinking vanilla cokes while very glamorous models strode by our table wearing clothes you could actually buy right there at Hess’s.  My mother is so committed to Black Friday and the amazing door busters that she once waited in line at 5:30 am to get a free ten dollar gift card…in a wheelchair!  She had broken her leg while hiking and insisted that my brother and I wheel her there in the freezing pre-dawn madness of late November anyway.

But I understand that we may be alone in this view.  I am aware that the mall on the day after Thanksgiving can be something of a nightmare.  I love to shop as much as the next gal, but I do feel that we may be going a wee bit overboard in our holiday purchasing these days.  At least in my family.  My mother also used to say “Well, you know, the Kennedys just write each other poems for Christmas!”  Needless to say, the Kennedy kids probably weren’t really lacking for socks and underwear and Ataris so poems probably were okay by them.  I thought that was a horrible idea at the time.  Now, I start to wonder…

I’ve been on the quest for some gift options that won’t contribute to the stuffification of my tiny apartment and might even give a little bit back to the world.  Now I’m not saying I want to get rid of Christmas presents entirely…but maybe I can pepper in a few greener, more generous, gifts as well.   Want to join me?

Check out Oxfam America Unwrapped.  I totally love this idea and I totally love this site.  Oxfam America is an international relief and development program, dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice.  Among leading humanitarian organizations, they are unique in that they are completely independent and accept no government money or money from any other sources that would compromise their ability to speak frankly about injustice.  How awesome is that?

So go to Oxfam America Unwrapped, and you can buy gifts that will truly help those who need it most–and still stay within your budget!  For only $12 you can contribute much needed soap to stop the spread of disease and keep a child healthy.  $18 buys a pack of seeds or mosquito nets.  For $20 you can contribute two school uniforms or irrigate a farmers’ fields for two months.  And those are just a few of the gifts available for under $25 (the selection is really super fun and I just have to mention that I’m totally giving my brother manure for Christmas this year).  When you buy a gift from Oxfam Gifts, your recipient gets a card with an image of your specific gift, and your donation profoundly affects the lives of people around  the globe.  Check out the Gifts in Action page on the Oxfam America Unwrapped site to see just how these donations help people in over 100 countries worldwide.

Manure for your little brother.  Chicks for your favorite Chicks.  Yeah, that’s something baby’s definitely gotta have.

So Send Me a Friggin Holiday Card for Pete’s Sake - And a Paperspring.com Giveaway!

Paperspring.com

In New York City the Holiday decorations go up immediately after the Halloween ones come down.  This seems a little quick to me.  But when you do the math…well, suffice it to say that as of today there are only 33 days until Christmas.  I’ve said it in the past but I’m a total sucker for the holidays.  I love the decorations.  I love the shopping.  I love the baked goods.  I love it.

I also really do enjoy writing and sending…and even more than that receiving holiday cards.  Now for years I bucked the trend and insisted on hand writing individual notes to everyone.  But eventually this just got to be ridiculous.  So I settled for what I hoped were very funny and rather creative form letters (still kind of makes me cringe to confess that).  I am a bit saddened, though, by the fact that it seems fewer and fewer famlies are sending out holiday cards at all.  I know everyone is busy at this time of year.  But I think holiday cards are really really special and worth moving closer to the top of the December priority  list.  I for one love looking at photos of couples and babies and pets.  I love reading about your kids soccer seasons and science fair projects.  And I think there is real value in making contact with far-flung friends and family.  Even if it’s only once a year.

So maybe writing a  holiday letter is just not going to happen with all that you have going on this year.  Why not consider a photo card?  There are wonderful websites out there that make creating beautiful and creative photo holiday cards really easy!  Consider a collage card, with snaps from throughout the year.  Maybe you don’t have time to write about all everything you did, but the photos are a wonderful way to share those events anyway!

I have recently become acquainted with Paperspring.com — a site that offers beautiful personalized photo holiday cards as well as birth announcements, invitations, personalized stationery, digital name art and more, printed on (and this is what really excites me) 100% recycled cardstock.  Paperspring has made a genuine commitment to green printing.  Read all about their soy inks, lower VOC compounds in their cleaning products, low waste printing, and recycling efforts here.

And did I mention they have oodles of delicious holiday designs to choose from?  They do.  And did I mention all shipping from Paperspring.com is free?  It is.  Oh and did I mention that you can get 20% off all holiday card orders between now and December 6th with the code HOLIDAYCARD? You can.

So listen.  No more excuses.  No more delays.  Go back through all those digital pics you took this year, find some fun and funny and delightful ones, and make some holiday cards and then send one to me because I want to get some friggin mail this holiday season.  Don’t worry if you’re not all wearing Santa hats and looking like a GAP ad.  Don’t worry if the light is kind of dim or Aidan has pudding on his face or Grandma is asleep in the background.  For the record, that’s the holiday card that I totally want to see!

Need another little shove in the right direction?  Paperspring.com is offering one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader a $60 Gift Certificate to their site!  Want to enter?  Read on!

As the holiday season approaches, I know I am going to be scouring the stores and the web for wonderful toys that will impact my little gal and the earth she inhabits equally well.  I am a huge fan of Sprig Toys! Their toys foster battery-free creativity in our children and the Story Builders Playsets are no exception.  These toys encourage storytelling and imaginative play, and the fact that they’re made of 100% recycled paperboard (printed with non-toxic water-based ink) and recycled sprig wood is just the pink stripe on the candy cane as far as I’m concerned.

These neat sets combine board books, puzzles, and sturdy 3-D paper dolls and buildings all in a compact, easy to take on the go package.  In addition to “Little Red Riding Hood” playset featured in the video also check out “The Three Little Pigs.”

Babies Bottom Line: Watch the video.  The Bean had a great time playing with the Little Red Riding Hood Story Builder board book and play set.  And Mama loves that it’s eco-friendly, non-toxic, and great for travel.
