Babies Gotta Have Vintage Designs – Ashleybug Organics Giveaway

Here’s another great review and giveaway from Kristin! Enjoy!

MD in a Super Cute Bib from Ashleybug Organics

Do you have a messy, drooling little one? A baby with enough drool to hydrate an entire small country? I do! And, Ashleybug Organics offers so many fun, all-natural drool bibs, pacifier clips, and burp cloths/lovies in super cute vintage designs! I particularly love the Sheep pattern (as seen on MD), but there are so many great patterns from which to choose. For example, I think the Apple Tree pattern would be perfect for a sweet baby girl, and the Elephant and Sailboat patterns are just adorable for those special little boys in your life!

The Sheep Pattern from Ashleybug Organics

The Ashleybug Organic products are handmade with soft organic cotton and backed with organic flannel (which is great to keep them in place on your shoulder even when your little one does not stay still). Each fabric is designed and sewn with the best quality organic cotton. This means that instead of conventional cotton, this fabric is grown without any fertilizers or pesticides, and on land that has had three years to remove any toxic chemicals from the soil (from previous other plants). I’m always willing to spend a little more to buy organic because giving your babies the pampered, organic treatment they deserve, for a fraction of the cost of the fancy baby boutiques, should be a priority. Especially when your little one has sensitive skin like mine (and you will love that they have been prewashed in organic washing detergent)!

Ashleybug Organics Bib and Burp Cloth Set

Although my little boy isn’t quite ready for the solids yet, his Ashleybug Organic bib and burp cloth are getting a ton of use. And, they are holding up incredibly well through all the drool, spit-up, and washings! The drool bib has a snap closure at the back, which is great for keeping it in place without the scratchiness of Velcro. But, the feature I love the most: the drool bib is short…so those little hands cannot push it up over his nose and mouth. I don’t worry when I strap on the Ashleybug drool bib, whereas, I refuse to use most bibs because MD inevitably pushes them up over his face and I’m paranoid enough to think he’ll suffocate! If you are a “mamanoid” like me, I am certain you will love this bib!

With the approaching holiday season, can you think of a friend with a new baby? Ashleybug carries great one-of-a-kind baby gifts and baby shower gifts. Or, if you want to treat yourself to a few stain-free, organic bibs and burpees, you are sure to have a clean, dry shoulder even if your little one drools like mine!

Hurry to Ashleybug Organics to find your own adorable products or gifts!

Thank you so much to Ashley of Ashleybug Organics for sending Kristin the bib and burp set to try out with MD. And I’m so excited to say that just in time for the holidays or the arrival of those December babies, one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a Bib and Burp Cloth Set of their choice! Pamper Yourself and Baby With Bionée

Here’s another terrific review from Kristin. Thanks, Bionée for sending her the samples to try out.

Bionee Certified Organic Skin Care for Pregnancy, Maternity and Baby

Calling all new moms and pregnant women! Time to pamper yourselves and feel completely guilt-free and healthy at the same time. Bionée (née is French for born) is a new skincare brand from the South of France specifically created for pregnant women, new mothers, and babies! The products are organic, completely phthalate, paraben, and synthetic free. All ingredients are safety-certified for pregnant women and babies.

I loved the samples I received, especially since as a new mom I wash my hands about a thousand times a day…and that adds up to very dry hands! So, I’ve been lathering on the Bionée Body Caress and Silhouette Lotions and loving them. They are not greasy, extremely light, and the fragrance is so miniscule that it is really not noticeable (which is good for those of us with massive allergies)! The lotions have been great even for my children who have extremely sensitive skin. Go to Bionée for more information, more products, and to purchase your own. You will not be disappointed!

Mama, I Don’t Like Your Stinky Face – GIVEAWAY

The Natural Dentist - Natural Oral Care

I went to the dentist this morning.  I was in a foul mood.  Long story, culminating in no coffee and too much rain.  I am not fond of the dentist now that my gums are receding and my teeth are sensitive and scraping the inside of my lower front teeth makes me feel like a thousand fingernails are scraping a thousand chalkboards in my mouth.  But with actual pain.  However, my lovely dentist has convinced me that for those very reasons, I must see him more frequently and not less frequently.  My dental insurance actually covers three visits a year.  I am using them, and I must say, the cleanings are so much better.

But the whole gum disease thing.  Is awful.  And it is perhaps the reason that the Bean has been known to say to me moments after awakening me at 6 am, “Mama, I don’t like your stinky face.”  I am fairly certain that gum surgery lies in my future.  But I am all for doing everything I possibly can to prevent that.  And now I’m looking for natural alternatives.

When the people at The Natural Dentist approached me to test their products out, I was delighted.  Their toothpastes, rinses and plaque removers were developed by a dentist who was dedicated to offering his patients oral care products that are natural, effective and safe to use (they are also made in the USA and not tested on animals).  See, I have just learned that many toothpastes include the ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate. Ring any bells?  That’s the stuff that I’ve been all about removing from my daughter’s bubble bath.  Apparently, in the interim, I’ve been eating it daily!  So what’s so bad about SLS? Studies have shown that it can cause skin irritation, hormone imbalance, eye damage, cancer…and it sticks around in your body for a really long time.  Did I mention we’ve been eating it?

So I have been using the Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Antigingivitis Rinse in peppermint twist, twice a day for the last few weeks.  The active ingredient is Aloe and I like how it tastes.  No stinky face comments in recent memory.  And, I am not making this up, the dental hygienist looked in my mouth today and said “your teeth look really clean.”  No dental hygienist has ever said this to me before.  My lovely dentist, while concerned about the bone loss where my gums have receded, actually said (unprompted) that the gums themselves look good.  Due to this rinse?  Hard to say.  But I’ll take it.

The Bean has tried the Groovy Grape Cavity Zapper toothpaste and her exact response was “yum.”  This is a fluoride toothpaste for older kids.  I like that there are no princesses, kitties with bows, or tv cartoon characters on the package.  Simply a grape on a toothbrush under a sun umbrella.  Awesome.

I have given a lot of thought to using natural cleaning, laundry, skincare and haircare products in the last few years.  Especially for my daughter.  I had never considered natural dental products because I feared that they would not be effective.  I’m switching. Period.

Baby Lust – Seedling Kids Organic Baby Clothing

While browsing the San Francisco Mission district, I stumbled upon Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, “A nostalgic assortment of Toys and Games inspired by the Natural World and the Predigital era.”  I’d say it’s one of the most magical children’s stores I’ve ever been in.  Most of the offerings are toys and games, but in the baby section I did discover some of the most exquisite organic cotton onesies I’ve seen yet.

Seeding Kids Baby European Robin Organic Cotton Onesie

The collection of whimsically adorned organic cotton onesies from Seedling Kids is special.  The designs are inspired by nature and feature beautiful photographs by owner/artist Stephanie Hogan Webb. The clothing is made from 100% organic Texas cotton, cut and sewn in Pennsylvania.  The images are then hand-printed in the Seedling Kids studio using only low-impact, water-based inks.

Seedling Kids Organic Cotton Tree Frog Onesie

The Seedling Kids collection also includes infant tees, infant pants, toddler and kids tees, dresses, and more.

Seedling Kids Nest Organic Cotton Tee

The magic of nature and the purity of organic cotton.  That’s something babies just gotta have.

Mama’s Gotta Save Stuff From Grime

Stain Solver

Well, I might be crazy, but I used Stain Solver today to clean my shower tile and grout.  I’m not crazy because I tried this product, but because I’m 34 weeks pregnant, and cleaning a shower really is not an easy feat!

Shower Before Stain Solver

Shower After Stain Solver

What I love most about Stain Solver is that it only has two ingredients, which are sodium percarbonate and soda ash.  It is actually FDA approved…so it’s safe to eat (although, I wouldn’t suggest doing so).  It’s all natural, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, non-toxic, environmentally-safe, and fabric-safe!  It’s soy-free, dye-free, gluten-free, scent-free, egg-free, sulfate-free, and phosphate-free.  BUT, it is not free of power!

It includes directions for use with laundry, stains, tile/grout, kitchen, carpet, and outdoors!  I tried it on a grease stain on my son’s pants and the stain disappeared.  All I had to do was follow the instructions on the container.  Then, I tried it in our shower, and although it was a little smelly once it started bubbling on the tile, after 20 minutes of soaking, there was a clear difference in the grout and tile!  Next (after this baby is born) is our kitchen tile and grout, which has been much neglected while I refrain from bending over and inhaling strong cleaners.  The best news is, that I won’t have to inhale anything with Stain Solver…just pure clean!  This mama’s gotta have more!

Stained Pants

Pants Soaking in Stain Solver

Pants After Stain Solver

If you’d like to enjoy this fantastic green cleaning product, just go to Stain Solver and look at all of its amazing uses.  The best news is that Stain Solver just recently launched their Spring Clean Sweepstakes. By entering you become eligible for a grand prize of $1,000 to Bed Bath & Beyond, as well as a year’s supply of Stain Solver.  Entering is easy: simply click the above link and fill out the designated contact form before May 26th.   For an extra chance to win you can share the promotion and get an additional entry for each friend’s email address you enter on the contact form.  Solve those stains and enter for a chance to win!!

Green Up Your Easter With Eco-Eggs All Natural Egg Dyes

Eco Eggs Natural Egg Coloring Kit

So I’ve been in San Francisco for a month, and though I love New York, this may very well be the best city.  Ever.  The food is scrumptious and healthy, the weather is divine, and a city with better views just cannot be imagined.

San Francisco setting the bar pretty high for green urban centers.  Not only do you see recycling cans next to every trash can…you see composting bins!  On the street!

Spring has already sprung here on the West Coast, and organic, vegan, locally produced Easter goodies are in every juice bar on every corner.  And nothing goes better with a gluten free Peep than a brightly colored Easter egg.  I don’t know about you, but the day-glo ultra-permanent dyes that you find in your local drug store give me the heebie geebies.  And also threaten to ruin some pretty cute flouncy spring skirts.  That’s why I’m super excited about Eco-Eggs.

I met Kip, the Daddy behind Eco-Eggs (and all the Eco-Kids products) at Toy Fair, and he gave me a Eco-Eggs kit to try out.  The Bean and our babysitter have had a go and produced adorable eggs that they strung with yarn and hung from the chandelier over the dinner table.  This egg dying kit comes with three colors (orange, blue and purple) created from natural plant, fruit and vegetable extracts.  It also comes with a color chart for creating 6 colors and instructions for dying your eggs. Printable activity sheets, eco-egg creature cut outs (pictured above), and an instructional video are available on their website.  The dyes are vibrant and earthy and the colors actually look like those you’d find in nature.  At $16 the kit isn’t cheap (it’s on sale now for $9.99 at Lullaby Organics!), but if you blow the eggs and preserve them, you’re creating not just a lovely decoration but a keepsake piece of your kid’s artwork that you can use from year to year.  And I gotta say, I’m a sucker for an egg tree.

Easter Egg dyes from a family-run business that actually come from nature…that’s something babies definitely gotta have.

Baby’s First Bubble Bath – My True Nature Review & Giveaway

My True Nature Organic Bath ProductsI always thought that I loved receiving packages, but nothing parallels the excitement of CW when a package arrives at the door! “Is it for me?” he asks excitedly. Our bubble bath and hair/body wash was nicely packaged, and CW was immediately drawn to the cartoon characters of Bobo the dragon and Milo the skunk on the front of the bottles. I was immediately drawn to the “100% natural ingredients free from the harmful chemicals that have been identified with health problems.” Not only are the ingredients natural, but the bottles are also from 100% recycled materials that are free from PCBs and phthalates and they are manufactured in St. Louis, Missouri!

My True NatureCW has never had a bubble bath before due to his extremely sensitive skin. We try to buy gentle, fragrance-free products that do not bother his skin, and so I was immediately impressed with the lack of harsh chemicals found in My True Nature products. Needless to say, he was completely taken by the bubbles! Although they do not last as long as he would have liked, they also do not leave that “film” that is often present after a bubble bath. The hair and body wash was gentle and yet, still foamed enough to give Andrew (my husband) the satisfaction that it was actually cleaning. We have enjoyed the products thoroughly, and I think CW is secretly figuring out ways to get dirty enough to need a bath daily instead of his normal every-other-day baths just so he can play in the bubbles!

First Bubble BathTo read more about Tubby Town and to see more amazing products, including some great gift sets, go to My True Nature. You can order travel-sized bath products to try it out yourselves, but I can assure you that you will not regret your decision (the most difficult part will be getting your child out of the tub)! As soon as our samples run out, we will be ordering more. And, I know that I will have complete confidence in using the products on my newborn when he joins his big brother in the bathtub!

Greener Cleaning in the New Year and a Giveaway

Scotch-Brite Greener Clean Products

So I’ve been thinking more about green cleaning as my achievable resolution for the New Year. My apartment is a disaster!  We are having late holiday celebrations with our extended family and though the bounty is so appreciated, attempts to put our loot away and do that New Years organizing have revealed just how cluttered and frankly kinda filthy my home sweet home is.  No matter how rigidly I enforce the “Take Your Boots Off By The Door” rule, muddy slush just seems to migrate around the apartment.  And if you think muddy slush is nasty where you live…imagine New York City muddy slush.  Yeah, we invented muddy slush, folks.

So there are lots of green cleansers out there now (hooray!!!).  And until now, if you wanted to go green with your cleaning supplies, you pretty  much had to rip up hubby’s nasty old tees and recycle baby’s burp cloths.  Which is cool.  But sometimes you need a cleaner with a bit more bite.  Welcome Scotch-Brite’s latest contribution to the green cleaning revolution: Scotch-Brite Greener Clean.  This line of reusable cleaning products (yes, bye bye paper towels for everything but throw up) is made from recycled, natural, and renewable sources and contains everything from scrubbers made from agave and recycled paper, to compostable sponges to those famous Scotch-Brite soap pads–now made from 100% recycled plastic and including biodegradable soaps.  They sent me some.  I’ve used them.  They work just as well as traditional sponges and scrubbers in my opinion.  I’m especially fond of the Non-Scratch Scour Pad.  I use it for countertop and sink cleaning.  Yeah, it turns out you need to scrub your sink sometimes.  And the scrubber is made from 50% agave. Just like tequila.   Maybe a little less fun.  But you can make up for that by composting your sponges. Now that’s fun!  Look for Scotch-Brite Greener Clean products at retailers around the country including Target or online at Amazon.com.

So to get you off on the right foot cleaning green in 2011, the great folks at Scotch-Brite are offering one Babies Gotta Have It reader a starter kit of four Greener Clean products.  Going green is even more fun when it’s free!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Still Cleaning Up Those Holiday Messes? Try Vaska!

Vaska Natural Laundry Detergent

The holidays are messy!  Cranberry sauce on the linen tablecloth you only get out once a year.  Smashed chocolate on Aiden’s corduroys.   Hot chocolate with marshmallows covering Lily’s sweet reindeer jammies.  Just in time, allow me to introduce you to Vaska, a new line of green and natural laundry products that clean effectively without harming your family or our planet.

When the folks at Vaska asked me if I’d like to try their products I jumped at the chance.  This past year, I have really made the commitment to use only green cleaning products in my home.  And the best news for all of us who want to go green is that the selection of natural laundry and cleaning products is proliferating!  And the greater the selection, the lower the prices, and the wider the availability of these green cleaners.

So what is this Vaska company all about? Vaska is a Berkeley, California based company that has earned recognition from the EPA for its dedication to developing products that break down quickly into non-polluting compounds to help protect aquatic life in salt and fresh water.  Hotels all over the Bay Area have picked Vaska as their detergent of choice.  And hey, the San Francisco Giants have also selected Vaska as the detergent tough enough to clean their dirty clothes.

I tried the Light Lavender scented Herbatergent, the Herbasoft fabric softener, and the Spotoff stain remover.  All three passed my test.  The Herbatergent cleans my clothes and linens beautifully and, as promised, the light scent did not cause my skin irritations to kick up.  These products are all hypoallergenic and gentle enough for use on even your baby’s blankies.  The fabric softener is lovely–not in any way cloying or too fragrant.  And the Spotoff spot remover removed paint that my daughter’s preschool teacher said wasn’t completely washable.  I’m a fan.

For all you NY City Mamas, Vaska is available at Duane Reade so you can essentially get it on every other block in town.  Everywhere else, check their store finder to see where Vaska can be purchased near you (it’s available at some Target stores and Sams Clubs so check them).  Or purchase it online at Amazon.com, Drugstore.com, or Soap.com, or Alice.com.

Looking for a New Year’s resolution you can really accomplish?  Try making the commitment to using only green detergents this year.  You’ll be amazed how easy it is to do!

Preschool Holiday Gift List – aganza!

Proud mothering moment of the holiday season:

Me: There’s a little girl here in New York whose family has to use all of their money to buy food.  So we are going to give her some Christmas presents [via the amazing organization Stockings With Care].

Bean (dissolving into tears of agony): But I don’t want to give her my toys!

Me: We won’t give her your toys.  We are going to give her new toys. She’s a big girl.  She needs new big girl toys.

Bean: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!  WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

So very proud.  Eventually they do become preschoolers.  And just in case you are still inclined to buy for them despite the fact they already have tons of stuff and can’t bear to part with any of it to make room for all the new toys they will get, here are my ideas for some awesome preschool gifts!

Kidlandia Personalized Maps for Girls and Boys

Kidlandia Personalized Map – Preschoolers love seeing things with their names on them.  And my little Bean happens to be obsessed with  maps.  So when the people at Kidlandia offered me a chance to create a map just for her I jumped at the chance.  These are really neat.  An easy form guides you to enter names of your child’s family, friends, hobbies, pets and more to create a fully personalized map just for her! You can add creatures, chose the size and shapes of different elements.  It’s neat.  The posters start at $19.

Affiliate Link - Playmobil Knights Take Along Tower

Playmobil Knights Take Along Tower – The folks at Playmobil were kind enough to send us this super travel play set and I think it’s awesome.  Having your holiday celebration at home and then heading over the river to Grandma’s house?  Little Aiden wants to take a toy with him?  Voila.  Here’s the perfect toy to open and then pack in the car with you. And at $12.99 the price is right for those holiday birthday gifts as well!

Affiliate Link - Plan Toys Green Dollhouse

Plan Toys Doll House With Furniture – This is the coolest dollhouse.  Ever.  From super green company Plan Toys.  A super green dollhouse awesome for girls or boys.  Go with me.  Look at it.  Not cheap but it comes with all the furniture and it’s awesome. This is the dollhouse of the future.  I’m just sayin’.

Affiliate Link - Sesame Street Counting Game for Wii

Sesame Street Cookie’s Counting Carnival for Wii – Okay, I am not, in general, so excited about preschoolers playing video games.  I am, however, a realist.  And when your ten year old and your twelve year old are all getting awesome games for the wii, your three year old is going to feel a little tiny bit left out.  And if you don’t want him playing Madden, Sesame Street Counting is going to make you feel a whole lot better.  We were sent this game to review and my Bean likes it.  She feels like a big kid and she practices counting with Sesame Street characters.  Isn’t that what the holidays are all about?

Affiliate Link - Plasma Car

Plasma Car – Got a kid who can’t sit still?  The plasma car is for you.  No batteries.  Kid powered.  Plasma.  Car.  Cool.

Affiliate Link - Melissa and Doug Wooden Sushi Set

Melissa and Doug Wooden Sushi Set – Cuz every preschooler wants to be just like Mom and Dad.  Less than $20 and they can be.

Yeah…I still love her.
