We Don’t Have Backyards in the City

Imagination Playground

We don’t have backyards in the city.

I mean, duh.  But think about it.  No. Back. Yards. No decks. No fluffy cushioned chaise loungers with pretty outdoor pillows.  No potty twenty steps away.  No sprinklers. No kiddie pools.  No nuthin’.

When I was very small, I had not only my backyard (that third of an acre that seemed to stretch on for miles) but all the backyards adjoining and those two or three houses beyond.  Nobody fenced off their yards in the 70s.  Or at least, not in my neighborhood and not with fences that you couldn’t crawl through.  We went outside to play. Not to “play date.”  I think my parents would have been worried if I were play dating.  Sounds suspicious.  I said goodbye to my mother and stayed outside for what felt like hours with no cell phone and nobody hovering over me.  I climbed trees and flew down hills that were thick with sled-splitting pine trees. I negotiated rules of games and imaginary landscapes on my own.  No one intervened to make sure I shared or that everyone else played fair or that we didn’t fall out of an elm on occasion.

So here’s my city kid.  And here I am.  The germaphobic mother of one that I completely admit myself to be. How does my little Bean learn to walk in a creek or scale a fence?

I worry about that.

imagination-playground-300x300 We Dont Have Backyards in the City

I recently was invited to an event celebrating the opening of the flagship Imagination Playground on Burling Slip at South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan.  South Street Seaport is awesome.  I have literally been there three times in the twenty years I have lived here (don’t judge people, New York City is friggin huge).  The Seaport feels more like Baltimore or Boston to me than New York, which is no doubt a reflection of my complete unfamiliarity with it. But some clever people including architects and the Department of Parks and Recreation got together to create a new kind of play space down there.  A play space that fosters creative play. Imaginative exploration.  And, they hope, unlimited possibilities.  A space that doesn’t so much tell kids how to play, as provides materials with which to play: water, giant foam blocks, sand, burlap, rope.  This flagship Imagination Playground reflects the historical site in which it’s located and there’s definitely a nautical theme.  The playground was packed beyond belief.  A bit too crowded on that hot summer day for me to believe my sweet girl was having the same experience I had in the creek behind Liz’s grandmother’s farm. But I get the idea.  I see the potential.  And if there were twenty of these play spaces in NYC, or forty, or one hundred, maybe each kid could have his corner of water. A bit of beach. A hammock of her own.

Nonetheless, I like this idea. And I like the lesson it reminds me. That my daughter’s play is her work. And honestly, it’s none of my darn business.

Why I Like “Dinosaur Train”

Dinosaur Train

I like the PBS Kids television series “Dinosaur Train” for many reasons.

1. I am a TV junkie.

2. I am training my daughter to become a TV junkie on a carefully selected diet of PBS and Nick Jr. and I went to school with some of the smart people who make those TV shows and I actually think that they are beneficial as well as good for getting dinner made.  Case in point: Bean and I are admiring butterflies.  She asks, “Mama why is that butterfly blue?”  I answer, “Well, it’s a different species of butterfly than the ones we usually see.”  She responds, “Species.  Like on Dinosaur Train.”  Game, set and match.  Call me an over-achieving New York City mama but I get a charge out of hearing my just turned three year old say “species.”

Learning Curve Dinosaur Train - Tank InterAction

3. I am all about products and commodities that break gender stereotypes.  “Dinosaur Train” is a television show that appeals equally to boys and girls and come on, we all know that only boys like dinosaurs.  The folks at Learning Curve sent us the InterAction Buddy and Tank Dinosaur Train toys which I then immediately birthday gifted to my child.  They are plastic and battery powered, it is true.  But they are textured, created in neutral pastel colors that my little girl finds pleasing (and I feel boys won’t object to), and they talk.  To each other.  You press the button, they wake up and sense a friend nearby…and then talk amongst themselves.  They provide facts about their species, roar, stomp and sing together.  Bean likes them a lot.  I love that though she loves her four tutus, she has two toy dinosaurs.  Win win.

TinyBuddy from Dinosaur TrainShiny

4. Buddy is a TRex.  Tiny, Shiny and Don, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Pteranodon,  are, in fact, pteranodons.  Buddy, Tiny, Shiny and Don (and come on you gotta love those names) are all one big happy family. Take home messages?  Families come in all shapes and sizes and it’s okay to be different.

5. On each journey the family takes on the Dinosaur Train, they learn about scientific thinking skills, natural history and dinosaurs.  Buddy is an insatiably curious little dinosaur.  I like insatiable curiosity.

“Dinosaur Train” is for kids ages 3 - 6.  It was created by the Jim Henson Company and can be found on your local PBS Kids station.  The Learning Curve InterAction Buddy, Tiny Why I Like Dinosaur Trainand Tank Why I Like Dinosaur Traintoys can all be found at my affiliate, Amazon.com

Princesses Are Nice But Soccer Players Rock - Go! Go! Sports Girls Giveaway

Go! Go! Sports Girls

So here’s the dilemma my friend Gretchen faced last night.  At one single moment in time her husband was attending a class, her son was playing in a baseball game and on a completely different field, her daughter was playing in a T-ball game.  I have heard that Mamas are supposed to be superheroes, but unless someone has really figured out how to bend space and time, there’s pretty much no way that my friend Gretchen can see both of those games at once.  Yet, of course, she did.

However, as much as I desire to tout the amazing and tireless Mamas who somehow do manage to be two…or three…or four places at once, my favorite part of this story is that my friend’s six-year-old daughter was playing T-ball.  Now, she also dances and does gymnastics and is in every way a model for my little Bean who is already wearing her hand-me-down leotards.  Today’s tomboys and girly-girls have so many more options beyond climbing trees and styling Barbie’s hair on a giant free-standing head.  Today’s preschoolers and high school girls are dancing and playing lacrosse and soccer and tennis and basketball, and I love it so much.

Cassie Soccer Girl Doll from Go! Go! Sports Girls

Active girls want active dolls.  Dolls like the  Go! Go! Sports Girls from the Dream Big Toy Company.  I first met Jodi, the founder of The Dream Big Toy Company at Toy Fair.  Jodi has a daughter and has coached girls through “Girls on the Run,” a program that encourages girls to make healthy choices  through running.  She gets it.  And these dolls are awesome.  They are sporty. They are snuggly.  They have cute uniforms.  They come with accessories.  They are for ages 3 to 12.  And they play sports! Real, active, sweaty sports like soccer, tennis, basketball, softball, and golf.  They also dance, run, swim, and do gymnastics.  And there are new Go! Go! Sports Girls arriving all the time!  They are proving hugely popular and I can see why.  I dig them.

Because princesses are okay and all, but tennis players rock.  Have you ever seen Serena play? And soccer players.  Love that World Cup.  And basketball players.  WNBA woot! And runners.  And…

Look for Go! Go! Sports Girls online at Amazon.com, Target and elsewhere.

Playmobil 1.2.3. Toys for Babies & Toddlers: So What Does a Zebra Say?

We all remember the Playmobil knights from our childhoods, don’t we? But what kind of company is Playmobil? After trying out their Playmobil 1.2.3. Large Zoo set, I spent some time on the Playmobil website.  The content is clearly written overseas and translated so it’s kinda hilarious to read some of it (excerpts to follow), but may I just say, I’m a fan.

  • Playmobil is a German company.  And most importantly, the toys are made in Europe.
  • The Playmobil 1.2.3. products are specially designed imaginative play sets for children ages 1 1/2 and up. I find the selection of toys for 18 months to 3 years old to be kinda scanty. This collection offers a nice selection of creative products for that tough-to-buy-for age range.
  • From the website section “Everything Revolves Around the Figure”:  “New colors, printing, different hairstyles, shoes and clothes changed their look and charisma. Not only sportive slim men are found, but also men with big bellies. Women do not wear mini-skirts anymore, but long skirts and trousers as well. The figures increasingly gained liveliness and play fascination. Interesting characters have been created. Figures taken from the past and present show a clear visual improvement.”  Ok that cracks me up.  I’m pretty sure what they’re getting at is that Playmobil figures aren’t Barbies! Not all are sportive and wear mini skirts but some have big bellies! Just like us!
  • Also from “Everything Revolves Around the Figure” (and ain’t that the truth): “There is absolutely no place for aggressive and horror scenes and short-lived fashion trends.”  Amen.
  • In 2005 Playmobil and a smart gal from Yale came out with the concept of the RDA of Play. So much more appealing than the RDA of vegetables if you ask me! Honestly, I think you should go check out the link.  It’s a pretty neat concept and they lay it out convincingly.  I mean, we all know it’s important to play, but they discuss play  in a way that made me think.  Here’s a brief quote:

“The RDA of Play

The basic principle of the RDA of Play is to remind parents it’s OK for their children to play. The RDA of Play is a set of guidelines on how parents can foster imagination and learning in their children:

  • Time: Thirty minutes of imaginative, make-believe play daily will noticeably improve children’s cognitive, social, emotional and motor skills.
  • Space: Assigning a play space, an area where toys do not always have to be picked up, so that imagination can take over and house rules don’t apply encourages children to engage in pretend play more often.
  • Guide: Parents can best serve as a play guide and encourage quality play by following these tips: 1. Inspire, don’t organize. 2. Provide props. 3. Don’t clean up.”
  • Cool.

    Baby’s Building Green

April may be over but I still have lots of innovative and beautiful green toys to share with you! Some of these we have been given, some are new products from green and gorgeous companies I know and love, and some I found in the aisles of Toy Fair.  How many birthday party invitations are stuck to your bulletin board right now? I thought so.  Check these green and gorgeous building and construction toy sets for boys and girls out.

    Green Toys Building Blocks

Green Toys Blocks California-made. Eco and safe.  Awesome.  This 18 piece block set is good for babies ages six months and up.  One of the most environmentally friendly building sets around, the blocks are oversized and light weight and come in a unique variety of shapes for building all kinds of structures.  Made in the USA from 100% recycled plastics, green packaging, and totally non-toxic.  A great new toy from a company we’ve come to know and love.

    Tree Blocks

Tree Blocks I love fairy houses.  Rainy day? Hunker down in your daughter’s bedroom, open up a bag of Tree Blocks and lose yourself in Fairyland.  Oh did I mention these blocks are made by elves? They are.  The elves hand cut the sets from reclaimed wood so no two sets are the same.  But all contain blocks in 2,4,6,8, and 10 cm sizes with disks, bridges and “y” or forked pieces for inventive creations.  For ages three and up.

Sprig ToysAnd coming soon from one of my absolute favorite companies, Sprig Toys — Eco Blocks!  These classic, eco-friendly and light-weight building blocks made from recycled sprig wood are top-rack dishwasher safe and come in a variety of shapes that will inspire your little architect (for 12 months and up) to reach greater and greater heights.  Or to build some neat stuff, anyway.

Go Greenzys - Eco Friendly Book Giveaway!

I attended the International Toy Fair this year for the second time. If you like toys (and let’s face it, who doesn’t like toys) it is a neato event. This year, however, I was blown away by the growing selection of green and eco-friendly toys.  In fact, an entire section of Toy Fair this year was devoted to them.  These wonderful companies are showing the entire toy industry just how dreamy it is to be green.  This month I am delighted to introduce you to several of the products and companies I met wandering the aisles of Toy Fair.

The Greenzys Eco Friendly Plush Toys

So to kick off Earth Day Month with a bang, allow me to introduce you to…The GREENZYS! Geared for preschoolers, the GREENZYS are an eco-friendly collection of books and stuffed animals designed to promote green living and help kids learn to make environmentally friendly choices. Not only that, but they are cute cute cute.  And green green green.  In all ways!  The animals themselves, made in socially-responsible factories from soy fibers and non-toxic dyes, are green from head to toe with cute earth logos on their tummies.  My Little Bean was sent Willow the elephant who collects rainwater for her plants and uses her trunk as a water hose.  Now let me say, that these animals are a really nice huggable size! Willow is a big squishy elephant and the Bean is a little bit in love with her.

Other members of the GREENZYS family include Peat the Penguin who is all about recycling and reducing waste, YewYew the Panda who grows bamboo to prevent soil erosion and create oxygen, and Violet the Giraffe, the ecological genius that teaches the GREENZYS how to reduce their carbon paw print in an effort to protect the environment…to name a few!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, for every GREENZYS purchase made between now and December 31st, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant one tree in our nation’s forest.  And even better, your kid gets a personalized certificate saying so.  I’m a fan.

Check out the GREENZYS really cute website for fun videos, green tips, and more.

GREENZYS are available at FAO Schwartz and FAO.com, but one lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win the adorable GREENZYS Book! In this charming book the GREENZYS meet Orinda, the world’s oldest living tree, and when they discover she’s in trouble, they work together to save her.  The art is unique and adorable, and the book is made in an eco-friendly manner with soy based inks.  And the book is printed right here in the USA reducing it’s carbon footprint.  Yippee!  Want to enter?  Read on!

Sprig Toys Story Builders - Babies Bottom Line Review

As the holiday season approaches, I know I am going to be scouring the stores and the web for wonderful toys that will impact my little gal and the earth she inhabits equally well.  I am a huge fan of Sprig Toys! Their toys foster battery-free creativity in our children and the Story Builders Playsets are no exception.  These toys encourage storytelling and imaginative play, and the fact that they’re made of 100% recycled paperboard (printed with non-toxic water-based ink) and recycled sprig wood is just the pink stripe on the candy cane as far as I’m concerned.

These neat sets combine board books, puzzles, and sturdy 3-D paper dolls and buildings all in a compact, easy to take on the go package.  In addition to “Little Red Riding Hood” playset featured in the video also check out “The Three Little Pigs.”

Babies Bottom Line: Watch the video.  The Bean had a great time playing with the Little Red Riding Hood Story Builder board book and play set.  And Mama loves that it’s eco-friendly, non-toxic, and great for travel.

Disclosure: Sprig Toys sent me this product to review.  I was not compensated in any way for this post. All views and opinions with regard to the product or company itself are my own and were not influenced, nor reviewed, by the company prior to posting.
