Babies Gotta Roll - The Car Seat

The trip home from the hospital with your new baby can be simultaneously harrowing and hilarious. Because we live in New York City, ours involved my husband leaving me at the hospital with the baby and making 80 block subway ride to the garage where he picked up the car. Oh so carefully we secured the baby in the brand spanking new car seat and he carried her oh so carefully out to the car while I hobbled.  For some reason there was no large orderly in white pushing me out in a wheel chair.  Ladies, insist upon this. Also consider bringing the boppy to sit on in the car.  I, of course, wanted to sit in the back seat with the baby. The back seat of a Ford Taurus stationwagon is really not designed for a woman who gave birth 48 hours before. It’s a fine car and all. Just saying. (I will totally post a photo of us on our first car ride home. I am at my parents’ in PA and don’t have all the pics. Come back for a truly lovely picture of me two days post partum)

So my husband drove the two and a half miles back to our apartment through the streets of New York, at approximately seven miles an hour. It’s terrifying to take a newborn in a car. It’s even more terrifying in New York. But we made it home unscathed. At which point my husband had to leave me again to go return the car to the garage where it lives, half a mile away.  You get the picture.

Car seats are a definite baby must have. Upon the recommendation of my brilliant sister-in-law of cheesy scrambled eggs fame and her husband who had done extensive research (they even talked to Boston area fire fighter) we chose the Britax Companion Infant Car Seat. It was sturdy and well-reviewed, I felt really good about it, and it served us excellently. I highly recommend it, based on my own personal experience. Of course, choosing a car seat is a kind of huge deal, and I encourage you to read all the safety reports you can find and talk to the experts before you make your choice.

There’s one other car seat I want to introduce you to, that I’ve only just become aware of:  The Safety 1st Complete Air Convertible Car Seat.   According to the Safety 1st Air Protect website, “1 in 4 car crashes involving children are side impact collisions. They are by far the deadliest type of collision for children, accounting for 1 in 3 child fatalities; nearly all of which are caused by head trauma.” The engineers at Safety 1st have developed a car seat using testing methods that simulate the most violent kinds of side impact auto accidents. Their Air Protect technology is designed to protect your child from the head trauma that can result from these accidents. I encourage you to watch the video posted on the site.

And even better, when you enter the Babies Gotta Have It Online Baby Shower (beginning in just a few weeks) you’ll be eligible to win one of these amazing car seats as part of the grand prize.   Thank you Safety 1st!

A car seat that you can feel good about. It’s a must-have. That’s just how this baby rolls.

Babies Gotta Play Pretend…Especially When Food is Involved

I am aware that this blog is called Babies Gotta Have It.  I am also aware that in one month, my baby girl will turn two.  She recently fell headfirst off a seemingly harmless foam kiddie chair, and there’s no denying it.  This baby is now a toddler.

We are having a garage sale at my parents’ next weekend. So sad to see so many of the baby toys go. Yeah, I’m saving some for friends…making a point to pass along things that were passed along to me (cuz it’s wrong to make money on stuff your friends handed down to you…right?).  But pretty exciting to see the toddler toys take their place.

It’s easy to find baby toys. It’s easy to find preschooler toys.  But toddler toys that are safe and age appropriate?  Kinda tough to find. Seems these days like everything I pull off of a Target shelf says “For Ages Three and Up.” So I was absolutely delighted to discover Play and Bounce–an online toy store that specializes in toys for toddlers!

The site categorizes the toddler toys by type, and I have to say, one of the things I’m most excited about is watching my little girl’s imagination start to develop. The fine folks at Play and Bounce sent the Little Bean the Dinner Time Set and Casserole Set from their Play Pretend Toys and you can see in the video just how much fun they are.  Plus they are colorful, durable, not made in China, and dishwasher safe.

Toys for pretend play.  Yeah, that’s something toddlers just gotta have.

Babies Bottom Line Review - Lilitah Baby & Toddler Blankets

Lilitah Blankets Who would have thought that sleep could be so complicated? I mean, sure, I often have trouble falling asleep.  And I have always been a night owl.  I can remember sneaking out into the living room and hiding behind the sofa while my parents watched “Roots” because I just wasn’t sleepy.

Should it surprise me, then, that my baby girl stays up jabbering and singing the Elmo theme in her bed…often for hours and hours and hours?  In many ways, she is absolutely my girl.

So when the generous folks at Lilitah offered to send me one of their blankets to try, I leapt at the chance.  What’s so special about Lilitah Blankets?  In their own words:

Lilitah Harmony Symbols and Blankets are precisely designed to lower your stress, help you sleep, and create happiness and contentment.  Science has shown that your unconscious responds to symbols, not words, and Lilitah Harmony Symbols have the ability to enhance, instill, and create feelings of always being safe to experience life,  with the freedom of being who you are, all while developing the courage to move forward.  Lilitah Harmony Symbols help to clear nightmares and create lucid dreaming.

Indeed, Lilitah claims that when your baby is snuggled in one of their blankets, the embroidered symbols will help them feel safe, calm and soothed.  They encourage you to wrap your  newborn in one to be passed from person to person to create a cocoon of safety and warmth around them.  They also claim the blankets help relieve nightmares, contribute to solving sleep problems in children, help speed up healing, and alleviate the effects of jet lag.  My little Bean was sent the gorgeous, plush polka dot “I’m A Big Kid” blanket pictured above.   I have posted about the value of super snuggly blankets for babies and Mamas, and let me just say that this Lilitah blanket is divine.  It has all 12 symbols attractively embroidered on it, and just could not be any more soft, silky, plush and snuggly.  It is, in fact, one of the Berkshire Blankets that I featured in my blanket post. The polka dot pattern is gorgeous and I love it. It is a beautifully made blanket.

Lilitah Waffle Baby BlanketThe baby blankets Lilitah offers are also exquisite, as you can see. I love this “Waffles Please” design which is embroidered with the symbols for Clearing, Heart and Joy.

So I imagine you’re wondering if this blanket has indeed solved my child’s sleep problems.  Now let me say, that we have had it for the months of June and July.  This blanket is thick and plush and warm.  I haven’t had it in her bed at night, simply because she would swelter and that would not do any of us any good.  I have used it as a receiving blanket after bath time, to sit on and cuddle with as we brush hair and read books and it has contributed to making that pre-bed time ritual soothing, calm, and special for us.  The blanket has been hanging on a chair right next to the baby’s crib while she sleeps, and I have to say, she is still having troubles going down at night.  She does, however, (and in fact always has) sleep nearly twelve hours at night so that’s really nothing to complain about.  I am eager to see how the blanket serves us this winter when she’s actually wrapped up in it.  I’ll let you know.

That said, here’s a little story for you.  Two  nights ago, my friend Rebecca was making us a wonderful dinner in the apartment.  It was sweltering hot, the lights were off in the living room, and the Bean was fritzing a bit, hurling herself into her little foam arm chair and goofing around. Suddenly, with the speed of an Olympic gymnast, she rocketed into the chair, over the stuffed arm, and landed with some force on the hardwood floor, directly on her forehead. She screamed and a freakish goose egg the size of a golf ball appeared on her sweet little forehead. After calls to the doctor and many exams from Doc Hubby, we determined no trip to the ER was necessary.  We woke her up every hour until midnight and she was alert (albeit exhausted) but fine. I, however, was traumatized.  I couldn’t let her sleep alone. But we have no mattress or sofa in her room.  So I spread the Lilitah blanket on the braid rug, plopped down my pillow, and the girl who snuck into the living room to watch “Roots” actually slept for six hours on a hardwood floor. Let me say, that night I was pretty glad to be surrounded by Protection, Joy, Heart, Abundance, Creativity, Gratitude and Receiving.

Greening Your House for Baby

Your baby is coming. You have moved beyond puke and heartburn, cravings and swollen ankles…you are big as a house and you’re ready for that baby to make her grand entrance…

EXCEPT! Your house is a sty.  A total and complete mess.  How is it that you have lived the past 9.999 months without seeing this?

Strap on your wings, Mama, you’re nesting.  And when it’s time to declutter and dust, reorganize and scrub, purge and purify, nix those nasty chemicals and go green.  The choices for safe, non-toxic cleaning are doubling daily it seems. Here are three of my new favorite green companies to get you and your house spic and span and ready for baby!

The Eco Store

The Eco Store - This New Zealand based company’s motto is “No Nasty Chemicals.” Which I love, because chemicals give me the willies and hand mange. But before you blow a gasket about shipping costs, let me say right off the bat they offer free shipping in the U.S. for orders over $25 bucks. Yup. So read on. Their plant-based cleaning products were created in an “eco village” in New Zealand.  I have no idea what an eco village is but I think I totally want to retire there.  They are dedicated to making safe products that work as effectively as those with yucky stuff in them, and they were kind enough to send me their lovely Lemon Cream Cleanser (good for bath, basin, white goods, stainless steel, chrome, tiled and laminate surfaces).  I just used it on my counter and gas stove (while unbeknownst to me the baby made a long distance call to Aunt Gretchen and chatted for about seven minutes), and it works beautifully.  Need to remove the caked peanut butter from the microwave before your inlaws come to stay with the new baby? Check out the fantastic household (and pet and baby and bath) products from Eco Store!

Green Works

Clorox Green Works - So here’s the thing about Clorox Green Works. Your husband will be able to find it in the grocery store. Need proof? Mine did.  We were on vacation for the 4th of July weekend and needed some dish soap to wash the baby’s bottles and sippy cups in the hotel bathroom. The fine folks at Clorox had given me some of their Water Lily Natural Dishwashing Liquid to try and it’s divine. Effective. Not overly scented. Really lovely. So hubs went off to pick up Chinese and a few staples while I stayed in the room with the babe (who is also in a crazy clingly Mama phase…is this what it means to be two?). Now clever as hubs is, he couldn’t find a health food store if it smacked him in the face with a slab of tofurkey. But he is clever enough to choose the green option when it is right there on the shelf at the supermarket.  And the wide availability of Greenworks  is one of the big things it’s got going for it. That and the fact that it works. I have also tried the spot cleaner (yeah, I dripped frappuchino on my new khaki shorts the first time I wore them). It works too. Yup, Greenworks is coming out with laundry products including detergent and spot cleaner too! Washing those new BPA free bottles? Cleaning and putting away the brand new nursing bras and tanks? Send hubs to the store. Tell him to get Greenworks. He may actually find it.

Earth Baby OrganicsEarth Baby Organics -  Because you’re not just gonna be cleaning your house for baby…you’re gonna be cleaning your baby! I’ve profiled a lot of mom created and run businesses…this one was started by a Grandma!  Who’s a chemist! Love it.  This clever Granny is using cutting edge technology to create natural and organic products for babies that are good for the Earth as well.  If technology’s your thing, read all about it in a very accessible description here.  Earth Baby Organics was kind enough to send us their Forget Me Knot Hair Detangler and we really like it.  It’s got a delicious vanilla scent, went on smoothly and lightly, and made that post-bath hair brush a calming and soothing bedtime experience.  Stocking up for baby? Looking for a lovely shower or baby gift? Look no further than Earth Baby Organics for a really nice selection of baby care products that you can feel good about giving and using.

Mama’s Gotta Have Eggs, Abs & A Big Giveaway!

Eggland's Best Eggs

My toddler won’t eat.

Well, except cookies…and bananas….and raisins…and toast. She hearts cookies and bananas and raisins and toast. But finding a way to get protein into her sweet little pudgy tummy is a challenge I face every day.  And from what I can tell, I’m not alone in this.

I do have many wonderful staples that I got from the terrific baby cookbook, “1, 2, 3,  Cook for Me ” by Karin Knight.  I profiled this great resource in an earlier post, “Because Baby Cannot Live on Captain Crunch Alone.” Probably should change that to Cheerios.  `Cuz I sure have tested that hypothesis.  Karin Knight’s book has recipes for toddlers too.  But I’ll admit, I’ve gotten lazy.  I don’t introduce new foods with the regularity and enthusiasm I used to.  I want my child to become an adventurous eater!  I need to pull that book out again.

My brilliant sister-in-law, however, put me on to a wonderful new recipe that seems to be a pretty surefire way of getting at least four bites of egg down the hatch, and sometimes many more.  This isn’t a cooking blog, which is a good thing because what I’m about to tell you is so not in recipe form.  But “Cheesy Scrambled Eggs” is the new favorite in my house.  So here’s how I did it tonight. Melt a little butter in your frying pan.  Beat an egg (or several eggs if you want some and they are so yummy that you totally will) and a splash of milk in a bowl until they are frothy.  Pour the mixture in the frying pan and add a scoop (maybe a tablespoon for one egg) of cream cheese. Don’t put in too much cream cheese or the eggs will be too runny.  Then if you really want to push your protein luck, add some finely chopped up, thinly sliced deli ham (but beware, one nearly imperceptible sliver of ham, when tasted by your toddler, may immediately be spit from her mouth making the entire dish, formerly deemed “yummy” into something that will not be suffered for another moment).  Let the eggs cook over low heat until they just begin to set around the edge of the pan, then scramble them until they are soft and fluffy.  At the last moment, sprinkle some grated cheese over the whole mixture.  Cheesy Scrambled Eggs have indeed been deemed yummy by my finicky tot.  Try ‘em. They’re delish.

So here’s the thing.  I recently worked out with exercise pro Cathe Friedrich. I’m guessing many of you know her from her incredibly popular exercise DVDs. She’s amazing and the workout, while challenging no doubt, was actually pretty fun. I couldn’t walk the next day, but I dragged around those aching glutes with pride.  Cathe’s workout was held in conjunction with an announcement to the media (and me…somehow I slipped in there) that she  has teamed up with Eggland’s Best Eggs to promote regular exercise and healthy eating all across America.  After the workout, we feasted on yummy omelets made to order with Eggland’s Best Eggs.  What is it about a guy in a fancy hat doing my bidding with an omelet pan that makes my heart go pitter pat?

The amazing folks at Eggland’s Best want you to try some Cheesy Scrambled Eggs…and some omelets…and some French Toast…and devlied eggs…heck they want you to enjoy a year’s worth of scrumptious egg dishes.  On them. Yup.  One lucky Babies Gotta Have It reader will win a year’s supply of Eggland’s Best Eggs. And want to have abs like Cathe’s? You can get those too (albeit with a bit more sweat than it will take you to get the eggs)!  The winner will also recieve one of Cathe’s amazing workout DVDs–signed by Cathe Friedrich herself.  And to help you in your amazing egg prep…an Eggland’s Best apron and spatula.

Eggs and abs. Yeah, that’s something Mama’s definitely gotta have.
