Secondhand Clothes Part Deux – ThredUp.Com

Thank you so much to the online kids consignment shop thredUP for giving me an excuse to repost another one of the videos in which Bean was a teeny tiny baby.  Wearing teeny tiny clothes.

Has my commitment to used clothing for children withstood the test of time?  You better believe it.  Everything Bean was wearing this morning when I sent her to camp, with the exception of her Tinkerbell underpants, was handed down.  Thanks to my amazing friends and family I have a drawer full of Keens alone- when Bean outgrows a pair we just open the drawer and “shop” for the next size up.  Often with a choice of colors. We subsist on handmedowns.

I remain convinced that dressing your children in second hand clothing is environmentally responsible, cost-efficient, and fun.  Cate loves her clothes.  I love her clothes.  And for this super girly-girl and her tomboy Mama, it’s just fun to have a lot of outfits to choose from.

When the San Francisco-based online consignment shop thredUP wrote and offered us a chance to review their site, I responded in about forty-five seconds with a resounding YES! So how does thredUP work and what makes it different from other online children’s resale boutiques?  You can use the site in several ways.  Interested in stocking up for the rest of the summer season?  Browse the pretty tremendous assortment of kids used clothing in sizes birth to 20. Put em in your cart, and check out with a credit card or paypal.  Everything is in excellent condition, and if you purchase more than $40 worth of items, shipping is free.

But say you are in purge mode not acquisition mode.  Simply order a thredUP bag (a deposit of $4.95 will be refunded to you when your full bag arrives), stuff it full of all those still excellent baby and kids duds sizes 12 months to 20 (more credit will be given for designer, in-season clothes), seal it up, and drop it off at your local UPS place.  No shipping payment required.  Once the bag arrives, the thredUP folks will sort it, give you credit for the items they can use, and donate all the items that don’t fit their requirements.  Nothing is returned to you.  Nothing goes into a landfill.  Your closets are clutter-free.  Then either use the credit offered to go shopping on the site, or receive the credit in cash via Paypal.  Payment in cash for your clothes is what makes thredUP unique.  Competing sites only offer store credit.  Coolio.

Bean loved picking out two very fancy dresses (what, like Bean was going to choose pants?) from the really huge selection of size 5 clothes.  And since the prices are so reasonable, you can really indulge your budding fashion star’s whims. The dresses arrived promptly and are indeed in excellent condition.  I was so excited about this that I immediately ordered a bag and sent off a bundle of outgrown clothing.  Can’t wait to see how much credit I will get.  If you want a sense of how much your clothes are worth check out the calculator toward the bottom of the thredUP bags page.  You’ll be impressed.

Secondhand kids clothes, designer duds, lots of styles and sizes to choose from…that’s something Mamas, babies and very fussy 4 3/4 year old fashionistas definitely gotta have.

And, I’m delighted to pass along a discount coupon for 10% off your first ThredUp purchase!  Just enter the code TU10 at checkout to claim your discount!

Thanks to thredUP for the opportunity to review their site.  As always, all opinions are my own and the Bean’s and were sure as heck not influenced by anyone!

Karen, it’s really a great site. I just got 19 bucks credit for a not-so-full bag of clothes I sent to them. They are totally up front with which items they chose, what they will sell them for, and what your cut is. I figure it’s about as well as I could have done with the stuff at a garage sale! And they are about to start a real consignment option where you can agree to wait for payment until your item actually sells and then get a larger percentage. I’m hooked!
